Gamma V's SMPS Showcase - Cave Story - Wind Fortress

What is SMPS? It's basically the sound format used by the Sonic the Hedgehog games, as well as many others on the Sega Genesis. Starting some time in mid-November, I began learning how to create custom SMPSes that can be inserted into a Sonic ROM. Many of them can be heard in Sonic Legacy, my current Sonic 2 hack, but there are a few more that weren't made in for the hack. For now, I'll just post the VGMs for the songs. I do NOT recommend listening to these with Chipamp. Use Foobar2000 with foo_gep or AudioOverload instead.

Sonic 4 Episode I - Casino Street Zone Act 1
SMW Custom Composition - Decisive Battle by mariomaniac444
Secret of Mana - Flight Into the Unknown
Sonic Chaos (Master System) - Gigalopolis Zone (16-bit)
Secret of Mana - Leave Time for Love
Shatterhand - Area B (16-bit)
Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis) - Rusty Ruin Zone Act 1 (Sonic 2 remix)
Sonic the Hedgehog (GG/SMS} - Scrap Brain Zone (16-bit)
Sonic 4 Episode II - Sky Fortress Zone Act 2 This one came out a bit slower in tempo than its source. I couldn't seem to get it to go any faster though. It works for its place in Sonic Legacy though.
Sonic Chaos - Turquoise Hill Zone (16-bit)
Mega Man 10 - Against the Pressure (16-bit)
Sonic Blast - Red Volcano Zone (16-bit) This one's not as "neat" as the others. That's because I had to dump it from the emulator rather than from SMPSPlay. SMPSPlay wouldn't play the correct drum sample.

I Use VGMPlay For Windows and I use in_vgm.dll Winamp Plugin

It Works Fine.

Also, Good Work !
I use VGMPlay too, but I'll have to check out that in_vgm Winamp plugin. Chipamp is also a Winamp plugin for a bunch of different chiptune formats, but its VGM component doesn't accurately play these, or many other, custom SMPS VGMs. The percussion gets extremely messed up.

Cool stuff, dude. I've yet to see any cool stuff with Sonic hacking, so this is a first!
Just so you know, I'm very active on the site anymore like I was before; I'm mainly on Discord now.
Thanks, guys. I just whipped up another one.

Mega Man IV (GB) - Wily Station

Like the Red Volcano port, this had to be dumped from the emulator, so it's not too clean. There's also this weird tone that plays around the 0:29 mark. I don't know what causes that though. I'll have to inspect the midi for some out-of-place note or something.

Looks like I'll have to double-post. I just finished up another SMPS. This one is Green Hill Zone, but it's not the familiar Sonic 1 Green Hill Zone. It's Sonic BLAST'S Green Hill Zone.

Good job; these all sound pretty authentic. I especially like your Against the Pressure port and the rendition of that custom composition.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
Good job Gamma V,i really enjoyed your VGM #tb{:j}
My Ports
Increase the tempo and add some guitars and Leave Time For Love would sound like it'd fit right at home in a Ys game.

Instrumentation could be better but it's p good for someone who's just starting.

@Leomon, I was going for more of a Sonic feel with that track than a Ys feel, as all these songs are intended to be inserted into Sonic hacks.

Anyway, I just finished up another SMPS.

I have no new SMPSes to show this time, but I did compile most of the ones I have into a .zip file, along with .asm versions that can actually be used in a Sonic hack with Clownacy's Sonic 2 Clone Driver V2. The only ones not present are Leave Time For Love, which I guess I deleted the original .bin to, and Wily Station, which I don't feel is fit for use until I fix that odd tone at the 29 second mark.

DOWNLOAD

EDIT: The .zip now DOES contain Leave Time for Love. I found the .bin in the backlog of a fellow SSRG member's personal Discord server's SMPS sharing channel. I still need to fix Wily Station though.

It's only to be expected that an 8-bit-ish song like Wind Fortress would translate well to the Mega Drive, and your port shows. But what I'm legitimately impressed with is Flight into the Unknown, which comes from the SNES. It sounds very, very authentic. Great job with both!
Thanks, Gloomier. I tried doing Undersea Palace from Chrono Trigger as well, but I couldn't get instrument changes to work correctly after a loop no matter what I did to the midi. I might try that one again with a different midi since I feel like it would work well in a Labyrinth Zone edit. I'm not just making these for my own hacks after all.
