Ganymede - Some music credit (or, how Kevin ported 30% of the entire soundtrack)

Here you have a ground tile (where player can stand above) that is invisible. That is because it uses the last line in Lunar Magic. I think it is considered as an error.

It is usually, but I do not personally think of it as a rule which must absolutely be followed. Secret paths are a big part of this hack and I don't ever stretch the rules like this for any mandatory paths in the game. This path just gets you to the secret a little more easily. It's telegraphed by the slope, and you can't die going down there.

I got this advice from Ladida on my last removal log, to avoid player hitting these sideways ledges (he cannot pass through) from the backside, since it looks odd.

I've always felt kind of both ways about this, but ultimately felt like the design trumped the rules again. You'll definitely run across more of it, in any case (more than the 'invisible' bottom row thing).

Once I get all the pros and cons about what I see in my playing, I could PM you to discuss. What d'ya think.

Sounds great!

Also, for what I've seen, the palettes and graphics you use look very neat, I wish I could make something like that ^^

The background graphics all come from stuff on this site. All of the foreground elements are edits I made to the vanilla graphics. All you really need to do past that is just play around. You'll be amazed by what you come up with.

Chapter Two: Land of No Shame
All six of you who remember Thoughtful Mario World, Ganymede is the same hack, evolved even further.

Indeed, evolution is an important element, as I love working on it too much, and am too much of a perfectionist, to be able to say "okay, here, it's done" and then not do anything else with it. Instead, I'll be posting updates weekly (or so) with newer versions and a log of changes made. I might change a bunch of levels or it might just be a few little tweaks here and there.

I also now have a story in mind, a vision of sorts. No, it does not involve Bowser deciding yet again, and for no good reason, to be nefarious.

The material I have completed so far is a game that, I estimate, is 2-3 times longer than Super Mario World. Yes, I'm not dreaming about making an epic-length hack or talking about maybe one day doing it; I have done it already. It's there, it's made and while in need of further refinement, it is essentially entirely playable at this stage.

> 11 worlds
> 82 levels, most of them full-length, meticulously designed and tested dozens to hundreds of times each.
> 103 exits (ish)
> Some ASM, enough to enhance the classic SMW experience but in no way radically alter it.
> No music. Yet. Maybe ever. I have no musical talent, though I would welcome, with open arms, the contributions of any talented composers who would love to help really complete this project, get your name in the credits, and just in general who are decent human beings. I don't want to use the same old music everyone's already familiar with. At this point, I will supply a playlist of music I really got into while hacking and which I associate with certain levels to the point that they are unofficial themes for said levels.

Level Showcase 01: Dunke's Wetworks

View Level (.png) | Youtube

That fresh smell is of the old reservoir and its fabled mineral waters, clear as sun-dappled sapphire and twice as lovely. Situated on a cliffside, the Wetworks is said to be a hub for the network of pipes connecting the entirety of Ganymede. It is the source of many legends, some telling of mysterious beings emerging from the Wetworks from other worlds. It is not known what came of the towns served by the facility as little remains of them, but the Wetworks continues to function as efficiently as ever, as if keeping busy until the day the builders return.

Level Showcase 02: Brasswood Monster

View Level (.png) | Youtube

What's that rumble? The one so low you can feel it but not hear? That's the fabled Monster of the Brasswood... or so they say. No one has actually ventured all the way through the tangled labyrinth or survived its ferocious, and still active, defenses, and come back to tell of it. Somewhere beyond is the Breeze Cathedral and one of the pillars of the heavens Mario must activate in order to progress through the Bleeding Gate.

Wow. This looks great! If only I could make hacks like that #tb{>:(} This hack holds a lot of promise with nice graphics, a neat story, and from the looks of it, good level design.

Keep up the good work! #smw{;)}

e. Also, the music in the videos, are those the actual music used in the game? Cause it's a little loud, and a little out of place.
Level Showcase 03: The Scorchpits

View Level (.png) | Youtube

The deepest interiors of Ganymede are a furnace, and in the deepest of the deep lie the Scorchpits, where high pressures have been broiling prehistoric rock for millions of years and the remnants of an ill-conceived mining operation somehow managed to dig underneath all this. Mario can only wonder at the horrors (if not so much the heat) experienced by those miners as he traces their path through this short but terrible tunnel.

It's not. There is no music yet (I do know how to add music, but I am trying to work with a composer friend to craft a soundtrack unique to the game). For now, I'm pairing the videos with music that lent me inspiration whilst creating the levels.

Thank you very much.

I feel it may have been fated that Mario would one day exit Thoughtful Mario World. This started off just as a level design exercise, but I knew I always wanted it to be more than that. Just didn't know what it was that I needed to tie it together and make it more than the sum of its parts.

Then I fell in love with an album. It tells the story of a man who gets on a boat and decides to just set sail, not caring where he's going because what matters is that he's leaving everything behind. When a squall appears, his boat is destroyed and he finds himself on an island, all alone and wondering what to do next. I think it's a beautiful album (which is actually telling a very different kind of story than appears on the surface). My hack Ganymede is an adaptation of the story told in the album.

This is your protagonist. As you can see, he's still WIP, as are other things visible in this gif. It's coming along.

Neat looking hack! The graphics in the previous screenshot look pretty good! Keep up the good work man.

Now I'm trying my hand at making more exgfx for the foreground (most of the game uses a heavily-edited allgfx theme for now).

Here are some grabs of this. It's a city-themed vertical level. Save for the BG and a few other bits here and there, all the gfx is OC. Here's a peek.

Some more from this level, which now appears to be mostly done. Virtually all of the graphics are original now. All the other levels feature much original graphical content as well, but this is the first which uses only graphics of my own making.

Click here to see. It's a very large image.

I love the design of this guy! Looks like a very original protagonist indeed, especially for a Mario game/hack!
Thanks. The protagonist's small form will be the protagonist as a child. He will enlist the help of a blind and silent friend who will appear in the following demo.

This video is not a polished demo. Some character frames are still not complete (but most are). There are a handful of glitches and palette errors (but not many). It's a snapshot of where progress was as of tonight, and it shows off a handful of levels. Made it for a friend, but I thought I'd share it with you.

Chapter Two: Land of No Shame
After two and a half years of trying, I find myself not sure how to effectively promote this hack. Whereas most people start a WIP thread sometimes even before they actually do anything, I did not feel it right to post anything until I already had a pretty large portion of the thing completed. It's been mostly a process of refining and polishing for the last two years. The bulk of the levels are already made. That makes it hard to post meaningful updates, since a lot of what's happening now is second, third, fourth draft work. I've pretty much made the thing, and now I'm trying to make it great.

This hack means the world to me and if no one else played it, well, I guess that wouldn't be the end of the world. I've been working on it for going on five years now and you can only do that if you really get a kick out of doing it. But having some kind of external validation of these literally thousands of hours would be sweet.

No clue, really, what I'm doing in terms of promoting and increasing awareness. Any help would be appreciated.

Nah man I get you. It can feel that way sometimes when your making anything really. I'd say push on get the hack done so at least yourself can look back and see that you finished it. That's one of the many things that pushes me to try and finish stuff. Granted I ain't perfect at doing so.

Best of luck to you. I hope to see some more progress soon as I like what I see. That city based level is interesting cause you don't see too many of them. At least I haven't. ^.^
It's too much fun doing this for me to stop for anything, really. It's part of my life now. Your kind words are much appreciated. #tb{:)}

Here's a bit of something. It's a mockup I did as pixeling practice, and it's only a mockup. For now.
