SMW Central Idol 8.5: RULES AND FINAL CHALLENGE(S) POSTED (1/15)

Link Thread Closed
Due to recent events, it was decided that SMWC Idol would be rebooted. If you missed your chance to participate, or were eliminated, here is your chance to try again. Note that to keep it fair to those who have participated in the other "version" of Idol, anyone who made it to round 3 will get a free pass to there, and anyone who made it to round 2 but were eliminated before round 3 will get a free pass to round 2. You know who you are.

Let's get straight to the point.

Contest Rules

• 1. Entries should be sent to me via PM on this site, or alternatively via e-mail, using the address in my profile. They must be in a compressed archive (zip, rar, 7z), containing the text file of your music, the SPC and all the additional samples that were used, if any.
• 2. Your entry MUST work with the latest AddmusicK.
• 3. Don't share your submission, or identify yourself with said piece, until the results for the current round are in.
• 4. You must follow the limitations in the challenge given in each round. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
• 5. No time extensions, no exceptions (probably). If you do not make the deadline, you are eliminated.
• 6. As with last year, no automatic porting programs. This means no NintSPC, CapSPC, SPCtoMML V1000, etc. Note that MIDI conversion programs are exempt from this rule (this means you're allowed to use TinyMM/PetiteMM/etc).

PRIZES:
To incentivize people into participating, and to give an edge to those who already have, prizes will be offered:

1st place: $50.00 CDN via either PayPal or a game of equal/lesser value on Steam (or if neither of these work, we can work something out)
2nd place: $25.00 CDN via either PayPal or a game of equal/lesser value on Steam (or if neither of these work, we can work something out)
3rd place: a custom title on the site

YOUR FIRST CHALLENGE:
Port any SNES song, but DO NOT use any samples from the game you are porting the song from. For instance, if you are porting a track from Chrono Trigger, you cannot use any samples from Chrono Trigger. You may also use SMW's samples wherever necessary.

DEADLINE:
November 19th, 2016 - 11:59 EST

Good luck. If you have any questions or require clarification, please post in the "Discussion" thread.
Round 1's voting has ended, and four people have moved on. I have contacted the 7 others who participated in the other Idol and either a) lost in round 2, or b) didn't submit in round 2. This means that a total of 11 entries are possible for this round.

YOUR SECOND CHALLENGE:
Port any song from a non-8-bit console using only the traditional 8-bit samples (i.e. square, sawtooth, triangle, DPCM) from an 8-bit console. You can grab the samples from existing songs in the music section, create/rip them yourself, etc., but the samples themselves must be 8-bit. To keep with the theme, the port can only use up to 4 channels, so if you're thinking of porting a track with more than that, you will need to make it work and get creative within those limitations (remove excess channels, merge channels, etc).

DEADLINE:
December 10th, 2016 - 11:59 EST
Round 2's voting is done. Round 3 will consist of MaxodeX, Gloomier, kouhii, Wakana, Torchkas, Nameless, and Sinc-X (doing this from memory - hope I didn't miss anyone). I have contacted those who have been on the by-list and waiting for this round, so without further ado:

YOUR THIRD CHALLENGE:
Port a song that is not from a video game. It can be of any genre you'd like, or it can be from a movie/TV show/etc, but it must not be from any sort of game. This entry must also be unsampled, meaning you must work within the limits of SMW. There are no other restrictions for this round.

DEADLINE:
January 6th, 2017 - 11:59 PM EST
This is the final challenge. There are three competitors left - Sinc-X, MaxodeX, and kouhii. Best of luck to all of you, and may the best SMW musician win.

YOUR FINAL CHALLENGE: PLEASE CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING FROM A, B, OR C. DO NOT DO ALL THREE

A) IF YOU PREFER TO COMPOSE: Compose a track that abides by the following guidelines:
  • The song must be primarily written in 5/4 time - that is, over half of the total playtime of the song.
  • The song must use at least four channels.
  • The song must be at least 30 seconds long.
  • The song CANNOT use SMW's samples - it must only use samples from any other game or source.

B) IF YOU PREFER TO PORT: Port a track that abides by the following guidelines.
  • The song must be from a video game that was released after the year 2000 (in any country).
  • The song must have at least two channels.
  • 50% of the channels MUST use Super Mario World's default samples, and the other 50% MUST use non-Super Mario World samples. For instance, if the song you have chosen is 6 channels, 3 must use SMW's samples and the other 3 must use samples from outside of SMW. If the song is 5 channels, the majority should use custom samples (3 custom, 2 SMW).

C) IF YOU PREFER A MIX: Pick two different songs from the music section. Copy and paste a single channel from each of them into a new text file, and then compose a song around these two channels.
  • Do not alter the note data in the channels you have copied. You can alter the global tempo, volume, and instrument data for that channel, but the notes themselves must remain untouched.
  • The channels must be audible. No funny business - I don't want to hear two totally quiet channels.
  • The song should be a minimum of four channels - the two you copied over, and two new ones you have composed.
  • When you submit your entry, please let me know which ports from the music section you used.
