Unpopular anime opinions

Self-explanatory.
Of course these are opinions, so not necessarily true for you, and of course, pretty much not supposed to be taken literally, even if I may make it sound like it.
It's basically like "In my opinion (insert small comment here)".

Mine:

-Moe anime are generally too formulaic and rely too much on generic cuteness.

-Fanservice anime are just bad...no exceptions.

-Dragon Ball is not even really good and pretty overrated.

-Most modern anime aren't good in general.

-The Shonen genre is one of the most formulaic genres it hurts.

-Bokurano is the best manga/anime about mechas.

-Trigun is beautiful, awesome and underrated.

-Loli fanservice is bad and you should feel bad if you think these are arousing or something similar.

-Azumanga Daioh is still the best school girl comedy slice of life manga.
Characters are more relatable, it's more down-to-earth and realistic, and on the end, it's really easy to see yourself in most of the situations, and most of the characters have a thing or two that can remind you of yourself, or a friend or someone you know.

-Yotsuba&! is the best slice of life comedy manga...really.
I can't even explain.

-Konjiki no Gash! is surprisingly good for a manga of its kind. Really, it's pretty cool!

-Hokuto no Ken is still the best fighting manga, and it still manages to feel more fresh in some way if compared to most fighting manga, actually, the fact that there are so many out there probably makes it even better.

-Most overly long anime/manga aren't really good and are filled with ass-pull and plot holes.

Well...ok, these are most of what I could think of.
Remember, these are just opinions, and pretty quick too, without much depth or argument on why I think these.
Of course you can ask why, and etc.
- There is not a single entertaining slice of life anime. The genre by design is boring.

- Shows that involve some kind of game world or that emulate common fantasy game stuff (eg levels, mana, whatever) are always bad and cringey to the highest degree, I honestly don't know how anyone watches this.

- I really wish animes stopped all having the exact same characters as all other shows of the same genre. Like, every genre has its own set of 5 characters that every show consists of, the only thing they change is the hairstyle and the le tragic past.

Obviously just opinions and I'm not gonna be mad at anyone for watching these shows (they seem to have an audience!), I just actually can't understand how people do this to themselves.
Your layout has been removed.
-The Hellsing anime is not really bad at all.
-Vampire Hunter D needs more attention.
-Cross Fire is a really cool manga.

Um...I don't know much, so I guess I don't have enough stuff to say.
Dawn upon me, morning sun... I anxiously tarry for thee, come to vanquish this horrible era of my life.

Things I am excited for:
Apparently there is nothing announced anywhere that really interests me.

Things I probably should do:
Update my profile to coincide with the new changes.

I can understand what you mean.
And to be honest, I only like Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&!, again, just because they have relatable characters, and are considerably realistic.
I can't really explain, but it's just like reading about life and enjoying it, and thinking of it.
It's weird, but that's just me. lol

Other slice of life stuff I like are Crayon Shin-chan and Chibi Maruko-chan, because it's what I used to watch when younger.
It's especially nice for me, because it can trigger a nostalgic childhood feeling.
And it can get pretty nice.
Reminding me of when I was younger, of my life, it makes me think and sometimes think deeply about my life and feel happier.

But well...I think these are the only ones I like, at least for now.
I dislike both Sword Art Online and Attack On Titan.

I generally can't stand the art styles of 90s anime.

Dragon Ball (Z) is overrated (I still like it, but probably mostly due to nostalgia).

I hated JoJo Part 7 (a lot of people applaud it as one of if not the best part).

Manga is better than anime for the most part (idk how unpopular this one really is).

I hate the harem genre (really only enjoy ones where it's subverted).

I'm a nostalgia sucker for Dragon Ball, but the only arcs I really think are any good are Freeza and Androids/Cell, especially the latter for me. I'm only watching Dragon Ball Super out of curiosity, because to be honest, it's extremely lackluster when compared to the arcs I just mentioned. That and the animation is sloppy and cheap. But umm, yeah, even my favorite arcs there aren't best anime material.

Edit: oh yeah, and the murrican DBZ soundtrack is generic metal crap, not to mention the cringy, horrible opening adaptations.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

- HOTD is generic zombie apocalypse shit, but with your everyday oversized anime boobs.

- Fairy Tail has zero thought put into character development and battles in general, and is extremely formulaic with the latter: character is beaten to shit by villain, then suddenly new power out of the blue or power of union melodrama and then victory. Also 99% of the female cast has about the same big body attributes, removing everything that feels special about it. Basically, it's a dumb anime/manga.

- Naruto lost its way a long time ago, by the middle of Shippuuden. A lot of good characters were either ruined by shitty plot twists or just simply died. Also the filler rate is amazingly, incredibly, extraordinarily high, turning the anime into a gigantic slow-progressing piece of garbage. I have no idea how it's still a big thing.

I watch a lot of Shin-Chan, can confirm.
After around 500 episodes the anime became shit, the manga is still ok tho.

I haven't read it yet myself, but here's an example. Seems like it's pretty good if it's anything like that page leads me to believe.
Unpopular opinions on Anime? Well, I guess I do have some.

  • Fanservice in Anime sucks and just reduces the quality of the respective Anime. It does have its place, I guess, but it kinda sucks when 90% of all Anime are only based around fanservice and when fanservice even makes its way into completely innocent and unrelated Anime.
  • Most Anime are sexist (I mean, that kinda goes hand in hand with my first claim, since almost all fanservice Anime are directed at a male audience).
  • Most mainstream Anime are actually decent to good. I mean, that's why they're mainstream, after all, because they have some kind of appeal to a large audience. In the end, it's the taste of people that determines what is good or bad, not vice versa.
  • One Piece is actually one of the best Anime series ever if you can look past the stretching, some of the lazy fillers (although there are only very few fillers, anyways) and the sudden raise in fanservice (how I disrespect Oda for that). You might need some patience with the story, though, because it needs some time to pick up, and I guess you must also be a fan of the genre in general.
  • For those reasons, it's actually my favorite Anime (now talk about an unpopular opinion).
  • Most Anime tropes sucks, especially character stereotypes. Like, seriously. I can only see the same kind of character stereotype so many times before I get sick of it.
  • Most dialogs (and especially monologs) in almost all Anime are extremely cheesey and surreal. I don't even know how to describe this, but it usually kinda weirds me out to imagine people in real life talking like that. Not sure if this is an Anime thing, a film thing in general or just a trait of the Japanese language that gets amplified when translated to another language. I mean, just watch a random episode of a random Anime and then each scene ask yourself "would a real conversation actually look anything like this". You would probably end up with a lot of "no" and realise just how weird a lot of dialogs in Anime are. I do think this is a film thing in general, but I also thing it's more occurent in Anime.
  • I'm not a fan of the Evangelion franchise. I did watch the series, but I didn't understand its appeal. Also that ending was pure mockery.
  • Some Anime are better (and/or more enjoyable) in their localised version than in the original Japanese version.

I guess that's enough for now, can't really come up with anything else right of the bat.

To be fair, that's probably because you aren't looking for them. There are plenty of "shoujo" animes with half naked and/or over the top sexy guys. One big difference is that anime can't show sex, so the upper body is all you've got, which of course has more to offer on female characters.

I guess that's true, Anime like that probably wouldn't have the same impact as other Anime, so I probably wouldn't even know of them in the first place. I still think my point is valid on a general scale, though. Like, in Anime that aren't specifically targeted towards a certain gender and that aren't specifially fanservice Anime, it's still more likely to see occasional fanservice for males than for females, and typical gender stereotypes are still quite present in Anime, usually in a shape that makes female characters look weak/vulnerable and dependent on some male character. I have found that even for strong female characters, this is often the case, and that is really my main problem. I don't mind the fact that characters like that exist at all, but when even characters meant to be strong are actually depicted as weak and dependent, that's kind of a problem.

An example that comes to mind here is Nami from One Piece. She actually has a very strong character and the Anime emphasizes this a lot. Especially in the beginning, she was also depicted as being quite independent and there were only few occasions where she needed to be saved by one of her male fellows at all. In fact, there were multiple occasions where she saved one of her male fellows and took on enemies they couldn't handle. As of lately, she has more and more degraded into a tool, though. The Anime puts way more focus on her appearance nowadays, she needs to be saved way more often, she stays in the background most of the time and lets the male crew members handle the fighting and her last serious fight in general has also been quite a while ago (probably in the Water 7 arc a few hundred episodes ago).

Another example I can think of is Winry from FMA Brotherhood. The Anime is trying to emphasize how much of a strong character she is and admittedly she does have her moments, but then you also see her crying all the time or being played as a tool or you see her taking a bath for whatever reason (that fanservices wasn't as bad as a lot of other fanservice you can see in Anime, but still it felt rather out of place in the Anime). Things that never happen with the male characters. Now I'm far from calling FMA Brotherhood a sexist Anime. In fact I'd call it one of the least sexist ones out there. Still I'd say that it does have some obvious tendencies here and there and that a lot of potential on a strong female character was wasted a few times just to use Winry as yet another tool. Now I'm really not someone who demands or even wants every single Anime to have a perfectly equal representation of male and female characters or who demands all female characters in Anime to be strong, independent etc. I do still think that examples of missed opportunities exist a lot and that even the strong female characters more often than not end up being used in ways that just doesn't do them justice.

If by plenty you mean like 5%, then sure.
What RPG Hacker was talking about is the fact that there's random fanservice thrown into like every popular show. You don't have to look for them.
By the way, just having cute guys doesn't equal fanservice... Jojo is 10/10 about the former but has next to nothing you could actually call fanservice for the men, the only people put into compromising situtations are the women (eg. Strength in part 3, generic shower scene).

Also smh @ assuming men can't have hot upper bodies, damn heteros

There is a shitton of anime out there, more than 200 new every year. 5% is planty. I'm not saying it evens out against female fanservice, just that male exists too.
Prove of point.

I really like one piece, but it does not define anime. Also, I don't remember Nami doing anything important until Alabasta against Miss Doublefinger, Ski Island I think she was semi useless again, I mean, she helped Luffi defeat Enel, she did something in Enies Lobby again and that's about it.
If you want animes with female main characters who kick ass, look for them. I can recommend "Shuumatsu no Izetta" which is currently airing.
I'm not going to deny that there are a lot of man/boy saves woman/girl type of shows, but that's exactly my point, it's that type of show.

I know, but what is your point? I wasn't projecting One Piece onto "all Anime", I was just using One Piece as a single example of an Anime that started out with a great female character whose potential was eventually wasted to turn her more and more into a tool.

Even though I'm not a very active Anime watcher today, I have still seen a lot of Anime in my life (there was a time several years ago when I was watching Anime non-stop), so I know for certain that One Piece isn't just "the exception" here, there are many Anime like that out there and it's almost impossible to find a single one that isn't based around some kind of stereotypes. Hell, the only Anime I can spontanously think of from all the ones I've seen in my life is probably, of all things, Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex. Maybe also most of the Ghibli movies. That's all I can currently think of, though. Note that I'm not saying here that all other Anime were bad or even that they were sexist. I'm just saying that all other Anime I can think of at least to some degree went with some kind of typical gender stereotype.

Well, I have seen almost all of the episodes at least three or four times, so I know the Anime quite well. Nami certainly had more moments than that. That isn't really my point at all, though. My point is that there was a time at the beginning of the Anime where Nami actually had some dignity. Like, even when she needed help back then, it wasn't just because of her female weakness. I mean, the whole Arlong arc was based just around this. She wasn't a weak and useless character in that arc, she actually had a strong will and suffered for her village, yet still she needed help. It didn't matter, because she still had her dignity. As of lately, she has more and more been losing her dignity, though, and moments that don't put the focus on her femininity have become rarer and rarer.

Who knows, maybe her character didn't change after all and I just can't take her seriously anymore because half the screen is now filled with boobs whenever the camera is aimed at her, but then why did they change here into this in the first place? Like seriously, why?

But that, again, isn't my point. In the end, a "female main character who kicks ass" is just yet another stereotype, anyways. It at least isn't a stereotype based around fanservice primarily (unless you go full Lara Croft-style), but characters like that still more often than not are designed mainly to appeal to some male audience. Honestly, I don't have a general problem with that, just like I don't have a general problem with weak female characters or stereotypical female characters. It's just when the majority of Anime are like this that it starts to bother me and especially when it happens out-of-place (or just starts happening in the middle of a series).

Here you are deliberately ignoring all of the points I've made so far, though. As I have already mentioned, it doesn't only happen in Anime that are "that type of show". It also happen in Anime that are completely unrelated to "that type of show", and sometimes it also happens in Anime that started out completely fine with no signs of "that type of show" at all, but then suddenly completely shifted focus at some point. Not to mention that Anime that aren't "that type of show" are quite rare, anyways, and even those that exist still often have a lot of sexism in them, just in another shape. It isn't really a genre-bound occurence, and I did see enough Anime in my life to know that for certain. Even if it was a genre-bound thing, why is there a "boy saves girl" genre in the first place? I mean, this fact kinda speaks for itself. I have never heard of a "girl saves boy" genre, and even if there was, it would probably be the smallest and most niche genre in existence, even though it really shouldn't make any difference at all on the quality of an Anime's story whether you have a boy saving a girl or some kind of other exotic setup.

But honestly, I'm not really asking for any "polar opposites" to begin with. Something like that is usually one of the first reactions you get when diving into debates about sexism, but polar opposites don't really "balance out" sexism, neither does anyone talking aboult sexism ask for polar opposites. People just want shows that are enjoyable the same for everyone. You can have your fanservice Anime and you can have your Anime with typical gender stereotypes, all that is fine, but then there are also a lot of Anime that would still be great even without their fanservice elements and would be enjoyable by a wider audience that way, so they really have no good reason to include those elements in the first place.

That's my opinion, but well, I think it's like Azumanga Daioh, but even better. Of course, it depends of what you enjoy.

Oh, also kinda about what RPG Hacker is saying.

It really depends of what you like and watch.
You just seem to watch anime that have young boys as the target audience.

For example, stuff like Free!, DRAMAtical Murder (I don't know much about these though, so I didn't watched or anything) and a hell lot of other stuff have plenty of fanservice with young boys.

And the thing is, there are neutral anime which don't even have fanservice, but most of them aren't famous.
(A lot, believe me).

Stuff I like generally don't have fanservice, Bokurano, Trigun, Yotsuba&!, Usagi Drop, Magic Knight Rayearth, Hellsing, Crossfire, Hokuto no Ken, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Rozen Maiden, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, Vagabond, Crying Freeman (though that's debatable, both men and women get naked pretty often, but...many of these scenes are indeed pretty gross), Akira and there are probably other examples which I don't know or can't remember.
I have watched other kinds of Anime as well. From the list of Anime listed there, I have watched at least two and I'd say that both of them contained either fanservice or some very stereotypical female characters (which to me is just as bad in many cases). I guess we might also have very different views on what qualifies as fanservice in the first place.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
On topic of what this thread was actually about, these are my hated tropes. (Also serves as another point for RPG Hacker)

The term "fanservice":
I hate how this term has started (or always been?) to be used for ecchi animes. Eg. animes that mainly focus on nudity or otherwise erotic looking scenery.
To me, the term fanservice implies it's service for fans. Like, you actually have to watch the show to catch the scene, they aren't thrown in every 3 minutes.
For RPG Hacker, yes, these scenes are usually utterly pointless and unnecessary. They are literally just there as "fanservice".
For example, the anime Hellsing. A rather serious anime, featuring a girl in a rather short skirt. Throughout the show, there is not a single pantyshot scene. Only at the end of the last episode for a split second. Is it necessary? No. Does it serve the plot or show in any way? No. It's just there as service for sticking with the show (or looking up that one scene)

Return from the dead:
The trope that makes me boil with rage. I'm not talking about zombies or anything like that btw. I just mean when a show kills a character (in the sense that they go through lengthy effort to make you believe they are dead). Only to later reveal they didn't actually die.
It is so frustrating to see any sort of emotional investment you had for that character's death be thrown out of the window just so we can have the ultimate happy end. Status Quo is god. What's worse, most of the time, the character isn't even important to the plot. They could have stayed dead and it wouldn't have influenced the plot in any way.
Seeing this being a bit overused in Fairy Tail is one thing I really hate about an otherwise great show.

The Power of Friendship:
That one moment, when the main character completely gets their ass handed to them and are about to kick the bucket. Then, suddenly, they remember they have friends or something and, out of nowhere, not only have the power to continue fighting, but also to beat the opponent who just two minutes earlier defeated them.
