What are your thoughts with "Paper Mario: Color Splash"?

I don't think Nintendo would be that evil. Unfortunately, I think they're just very out of touch with the series' fanbase. I don't know how it's possible, but either they don't know we want something like the original two games, or they know and they don't care. It's kind of a slap in the face, really, since without us fans buying the original games, these terrible sequels wouldn't even exist.
My theory with these games as of recent (Sticker Star, Paper Jam and now Color Splash) is that Nintendo is phasing out these "one-time" use characters in RPGs. Notice that Paper Jam does not have any new character whatsoever, and the bosses are mostly boss characters from mainline Mario games (Petey, or giant generic enemy like a wiggler or boo).

Why? So they don't have to "bother" with them in the future, and focus on marketing the more usual characters instead with amiibo and such.

Nintendo has said that they want to use amiibo, smartphone apps and movies/tv shows as a way to get their IP known. Maybe this is all part of their long term plan to get people know who their main characters really are. Get the casuals familiarized with the franchise.

That and they're tying it more with the mainline Mario franchise, which is why we have Koopas without the glasses being enemies, no friendly Goombas, etc.

I could be wrong, it is only a theory. I just need an explanation for them using dumb generaic-ass Toad NPCs for fucking everything jesus christ Fuck miyamoto.

As for color splash, I think a deck-building mechanic would be fun but by the looks of it the cards are consumed like stickers anyway, super lame.
They said in a Paper Jam interview that they originally had a tonne of new characters, but had to cut almost all of them to make room for the paper versions of existing characters, to keep the plot from being confusing to the slightly less cerebral audience.

No idea why Paper Mario is just Paper Toad at this point though.

I don't believe Nintendo took non-Japanese sales data into account.

The only other friendly NPCs not introduced in RPGs are Yoshis, Piantas, Nokis and Lumas. We haven't seen the latter three since Galaxy 2, so it's safe to say they're gone for good.

that would be a terrible business model and they would be completely ignoring why nintendo of america and europe even exist.

think about how many 8 y/os out there are dominating miiverse. i wouldn't doubt all the people screaming "PAPER MARIO RUINED" at the top of their lungs isn't enough to make nintendo ignore how many people bought sticker star and didn't refund it for being a "terrible game that ruined the franchise" (quotes used because i haven't even played sticker star)

Who even said anything about Japanese and non-Japanese? Regardless, I'm willing to bet there are plenty of Japanese fans upset about the trend the series has taken as well.

I watched the whole goddamn 30-minuet gamexplain video on it and I'm leaning to think that the cards aren't consumed and only paint is consumed to use them. I hope for decks and shit, I just want fun battles again

Mother 3 wants to speak with you

On topic: I just think that they're trying too hard WAY too hard to make the franchise "better", and have lost focus on what made Paper Mario what it was: "Variety". Not saying TTYD was bad, but I would rather play the entire thing for the fifth time, than play something that looks cheaply made. I couldn't even watch anything about Mario recently cause i know im not the only one who sick of seeing Toads everywhere. It makes it look choppy, lazy, and just a way to put in a filler, instead of creativity.

Such a shame to ruin a good series on such an advanced system.
Nintendo said that they gave up on Paper Mario as an RPG, because M&L series fills that spot just fine and are now just using Paper Mario for more experimental stuff.

Why do Nintendo think it's bad to have two concurrent Mario RPGs? I mean, I loved Super Paper Mario to be fair and I'd like to see a sequel to that, and I'm not against more experimental game - but so, so many people have been dying to see a proper TTYD sequel for years. I've only played the original Paper Mario but a game with similar gameplay mechanics would be a breath of fresh air. You need only look at our thousands of posts long Paper Mario forum games to confirm that.

Then again, at this point I'm not sure I'd want Nintendo themselves designing it. Something more hardcore that takes what TTYD did, increase the level of unique mechanics, allow party members to act like they did in Super Mario RPG and have more interesting equipment would be awesome.

Someone ought to ask Nintendo if there's actually restrictions on what races can be friendly NPCs. Because it appears it's been specifically mandated that only toads and yoshis can be friendly (Actually, that would explain why you can only meet Birdo once per save file, come to think of it).

And enough with Bowser always being the final boss no matter what. It made some sense in Wooly World, but in New Island, especially considering the way it happened, Tirek would have been a better candidate. In fact, exclude Dark Moon and the last time the final boss wasn't Bowser was Super Paper Mario.

I don't understand all the hate the trailer is getting. It really doesn't look that bad.

This might be pretty good. I'll bet everyone will love this.

My only wish when it comes to Paper Mario, is just for a new game to do to TTYD what that game did to Paper Mario on the Nintendo 64. Bigger and better, pretty much.
Nintendo is known for his "recycling" about his games. PMCS looks pretty good but we don't see many new thing. Gonna test that

That honestly seems like it'll be better than both Sticker Star and how Color Splash is looking.

Speaking of, I'm in the "oh boy a Sticker Star remake, gonna pass on this one" boat. That game was a waste of my time and money.

This is a thing that's happening, now. Achievements in old video games.
Thank you for the layout, Erik557.
Man, I wish this would've worked. Oh well.
If not for respect, but dramatic effect, take on the face of Guy Fawkes.
I'm a fan of the Paper Mario series, and it is disappointing to see how Color Splash turned out. I waited nearly ten years for the next home console release to see if it will return to how the first two games were like, but sadly no. When you really think about it, Color Splash does make sense when it comes to the paper theme, but Paper Mario wasn't really about paper, more about stories like people have said. It isn't entirely bad, but it ruined what the series was. I think the color concept would actually work if it was in a different type of Mario game, like a new genre.
So, the game came out yesterday. I pre-ordered it a few days before and got it. So far I've played through half of chapter 1 (they're not called worlds or chapters in-game but I'm just gonna call the different areas chapters), and my current opinion is "it's alright, at least it's better than Sticker Star".

The combat, unfortunately, is pretty much SS's but dragged out longer and it uses cards instead of stickers. I haven't made it to any bosses yet, but unless something new is introduced mid-way in the game, battle works like this:

You enter a fight, select a card or two from your deck and confirm the selection. Hold down your finger on the cards on the touchscreen to fill them with paint. Confirm, then slide the cards upwards with the touchscreen. Rinse and repeat. It's quite underwhelming, and takes forever. And two other things; you can't choose what enemy to attack, the game does. There's also no HP meter to indicate how much health they have left. Instead, their HP is signified by their color. The more of their health you drain, the more their color goes away.

Outside of battle though, I'm happy with it so far. There's much more dialogue than in Sticker Star and the puzzles aren't as stupidly difficult to figure out. While the whole every-NPC-is-a-Toad thing still sucks, at least their dialogue frequently has great writing and comedy. I'm early in the game but it already referenced a movie, Poltergeist, and that was unexpectedly weird but funny.

The story, sadly did take a hit. After you get your new companion Huey the paint bucket, you fix up Port Prisma and leave to begin your hunt for the Big Paint Stars (basically this game's Star Spirits/Crystal Stars/Pure Hearts/you get the idea). The main antagonist has yet to appear but it's very obviously Bowser (due to Bowser tape being seen occasionally in the areas, blocking your progress). So far, Peach hasn't been kidnapped, she's just waiting around in Port Prisma. But yeah, so far, the story is pretty unremarkable. Oh, right, and from what I've heard of it so far, the music is great, just as I expected, so no complaints there.

That's all I have to say at the moment. I'll post some more the further I get in the game.
I
pirated
it when it
leaked way before release
, and it didn't really hook me in. It looks pretty, the soundtrack is nice, some lines are somewhat funny, but I just don't really feel it. Nothing feels interesting, the characters (aka Toads) are lame, the battles are boring as sin, you know the drill. Maybe if I had pumped 80 shitty canadian dollars on it, I'd make an effort to like it more and power through it. But as it stands, I have no reason to lie to myself into liking the game, only to feel better about the state of the series, and my 80 dollars.

I looked at the final stretch on youtube, and it seemed like they were actually going to try and make it somewhat interesting. But they bailed out and made it end on a disappointing note. Too bad, so sad.
