Super Mario World: Over the Mountain - Demo #2

EDIT:
Apparently the patch only works on "Super Mario World (U) [!].smc" roms. I'll try to fix whatever is causing this, but in the meantime, just use that rom.

Hey, everyone! I've been working on a hack called Super Mario World: Over the Mountain. Some of you might remember it from last C3, or even my thread over in the Works in Progress forum. Anyway, I have a new demo available for download for this C3. This demo adds 4 levels (bringing the total to 7), new overworlds, new music, and the ability to play as Luigi! I would appreciate it if you could give the demo a try and post your opinions. I'm looking for feedback on what needs to be improved.

Overworld:

Levels:

Berry Fields:

Description:
The first level in the game! Mario starts his trek up the mountain with a pleasant jog
through a berry orchard. The morning sunrise paints beautiful colors through the sky.

Screenshots:

Forest Frolic:

Description:
A bustling forest filled with trees and saw-blades. Mario reaches a giant tree and has
to climb it to reach the tree tops. Will he make it in one piece?

Screenshots:

Snowball Scuffle:

Description:
As he climbs higher up the mountain, Mario reaches a snowy area. Here he must use throw
blocks as ammunition in a snowball fight with a pack of persistent Chucks.

Screenshots:

Chuck Crag:

Description:
As he reaches closer to the top of the mountain, things get a lot more rocky for our hero.
On this volcano, Mario must avoid lava, falling rocks, and as the name suggests, Chucks!

Screenshots:

Cloud-top Climb:

Description: Mario has made it to the top of the mountain, but it looks like he's not done
yet. He continues climbing up through the clouds! Bullet Bills shoot at him from all directions!

Screenshots:

Cumulus Cruise:

Description: Continuing through the clouds, Mario finds a horde of Koopas. Platforming
through the clouds is perilous! Meanwhile, the sun begins to set in the sky.

Screenshots:

Zero-G Zoom:

Description:
Mario finds himself in space being attacked by alien fighters. The low gravity allows him
to swim through the air and shoot fireballs straight forward, space-shooter style!

Giving a play on this one again. The screenies are nice as usual, and I'm also very curious to listen to the new ports inserted in the game, as I really enjoyed the previous ones.

Once I'm done, I'll post a review.

Mario gets glitched on the Overworld when beeing warped to the third Area.

Edit: Do you bother releasing the music from Berry Fields to public? (if it is even made by you. Otherwise could you please tell me what music it is?)

The overworld is so clean, vaste and fresh, echoing what I said last c3.
Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

The music credits are in the credits txt. The song from Berry Bushes is "Good Luck" from Mario Party 3. I made the port, though.

Also, what do you mean about Mario getting glitched? Could you upload a screenshot?

It looks like you set the warp to the Submap wrong. It just fades over and over. Its hard to make a Screenshot of it but I hope you know what I mean.

Do you bother releasing it? Because I think the port is really good.

So, the glitch happens when you leave the forest area? I can't seem to reproduce it on my end. Maybe try patching it with a different rom?

Also, I never thought about releasing the music ports, but I guess I could.

What base rom did you use? For now I just placed Mario on the 3rd Level.

This would be really cool.

It's called "Super Mario World (U) [!].smc"

Yeah. It worked with that Rom.

Should I have created the patch with a different rom?

No, no. It's fine the way it is. Maybe just tell people who download this which rom they need

Had the same problem as Tob here, so as of now I'm unable to play as I lack of a variety of SMW ROMs. I'll owe you a review for the time being, but I'll still be keeping an eye on this project.

Damn, really nice! The levels, layer 3, ports, basically everything! A major problem I had when playing the hack was the exit from the forest world to the lava/mountain world. I was broken and I had to go into LM to fix this myself. Not sure if I patched it wrong, though. Also, could you tell me how you got the sunset to nighttime transition effect on the level Cumulus Cruise?
A lot of people seem to be having problems with the transition between the forest and the mountain. Anyone know what's causing it? I know it has to do with the exact rom used to create the patch, but is there a way to get maximum compatibility? I'd really like the most amount of people to be able to play the game.
Use a (E) Rom. This should work. At least this was the Rom I used that caused this problem.

Manually fixed the issue regarding the OW. It wasn't a warping problem, but a missing regular path tile that caused the problem. Well, I've finished playing the demo so now I'm able to review it.

Pretty nice new levels, and I liked the modifications done to some of pre-existing ones. The hack has a very simple visual style, but it's very pleasant to the eyes. Level design overall is pretty nostalgic... I dunno how I love your levels more than the ones I'm used to see in other hacks. Maybe it's because of the entire game's feel? And there's the music I once mentioned. Your ports sound very nice. There's no fanciness added, songs are naturally catchy. Plus, the way you ported known songs (also already ported and featured in other hacks) adds more value to them, because of their uniqueness. They sound different and don't clash. It's like the game had its own soundtrack.

But there are little details you could revise.

Layer 3 background cutoff here. This can be fixed in various ways, but I recommend either making the window green-filled instead of transparent, or move the layer 3 background some tiles down.

I dunno here. Are the fishes here intended to be flopping underwater? If not, be sure to enable sprite buoyancy.

Cutoff in the dirt below. You should fill with more dirt tiles or disable vertical scrolling.

And other little thing: when I edited the ROM to fix the missing path tile in the OW, I've got a RATS notification. So, probably this problem would be due to some freespace overflow, which is responsible for lots of problems, and may even lead to eventual ROM crashing. So, a suggestion I have is to port everything to a new, fresh ROM before uploading an updated version of the hack, and be sure to often make full restore points in LM.

That's it, I guess. Well, I encourage you to try composing your own songs in the future, too. You seem to have a good talent if you put effort in it.

Keep up the nice work!

Thanks so much for the review. About the RATS problem. How would I go about porting everything to a new ROM without recreating the problem in that ROM?
The RATS problem gets naturally fixed once you port your stuff to the new ROM. What eventually causes nested RATS is the act of doing various edits in the currently used ROM (be it by saving levels, inserting or re-inserting patches, blocks, sprites, music, GFX and similar). Porting all stuff to a fresh one makes it so everything gets better allocated and optimizes free space for future use, as likely these previous edits caused the freespace overflow.
