Theultimate12`s SPC700 Remix Pack

Well, after A LOT of suffering, here it is! And look at that, just in time for C3. XD

Anyway, for those who dont know me, I am a newbie remixer which is using SNESGSS to make genuine SNES music (not like FL Studio where there is no regard to the SNES`s limitations), and because of that, yes, all of my songs are portable to SMW, and they are also all sampled (mostly with MMX samples), for people who wants to know.

Anyway, lets get to the remix collection!

MMX Styled
Megaman Zero 2: The Last ~ The Wish Punished
DKC2: Hot Head Hop
Cave Story: Scorching Back
Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Act 2 Boss
Megaman 3: Wily 3-4
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team: Vs.Boss
Touhou 4: Vessel of Stars ~ Casket of Star
Touhou 3: Strawberry Crisis!!

MM7 Styled
Cave Story: Scorching Back

And now, two bonus remixes that I made while testing Seiken Densetsu 3`s sample set (and, of course, this wont be as good as the others, but I am still posting just in case)

Megaman ZX: Sky High ~ Grand Nuage
Russian National Anthem (fun fact: this was done as a school project, but I couldnt really show it since everyone forgot to play this. Oh well)

Here is the download:

Remix Pack

And here is the link to the SD3 samples I have, in case anyone is interested (warning: the sample set is REALLY incomplete, and some samples arent looped properly. I might re-release this some day, though)

Sample Set

And well, that`s it! if there is anything wrong with the ports, let me know so I can try to fix this when C3 ends. Also, I dont think it needs to be said, but if these ports are not the best you ever seen, its probably because of my noobiness in remixing. XD

EDIT: Just a warning for people who want to listen to the SPCs: they are a bit loud, so it would probably be better if you lowered your volume until I find a way to fix this (hopefully) before C3 ends. That`s all.

I'm going deaf but even these are pretty loud, even at my volume being at 40%. I'd recommend lowering the global volume. How'd you rip the samples btw.
Major thanks to Suika Ibuki for layout!
I'm open for music requests, just DM me on discord and we can further discuss there.

i'm going to be honest, these are all pretty unlistenable. there are a number of reasons for this but i'm going to be starting with the most obvious one:

absolute lack of volume balancing. if i don't turn my speakers way down when listening to the worst offender of this, "the wish punished", my ears legitimately hurt. i'm actually surprised you're able to listen to these without at least adjusting some volumes.
what on earth is going on in the .txt files like seriously i'm pretty sure that you used spc2mml but since they're custom somehow i have no idea how you pulled that off
a number of songs have two of the same instrument playing the same note at the same time which is pretty bad because it basically doubles the volume of the note, which harshens the already very offensive volumes

some other suggestions.

panning can be your friend. it helps distinguish channels from each other and adds another layer of depth to the song.
try other methods of creating music. i originally worked with midis and ported them over but moved over to working with .txts directly, since that allowed better control over the output. it might be worth trying either of those methods, or any others you find.
try working with some of the fancier commands, like echo, tremolo, vibrato, all that good stuff.
don't forget to ask others for help. you can't improve easily at all unless you submit your work to others for suggestions.

that's it i think. good luck with your future endeavors

Yeah, sorry, that`s the problem with most of my remixes. Rest assured, though, that you could be listening to A LOT worse (like my early covers, for example. Like seriously, the strings on those are so earpiercing its not even funny, though I have been getting better, so these fuckups arent happening anytime soon). Oh, and I ripped the samples using SPC Decoder. Its a pretty great program for ripping accurate samples (heck, even has a way to make a perfect looping point, though it might make the sample pretty large in the process), and I definitely recommend it.

And yeah, I knew these wasnt good enough for C3. I mean, I am still fairly new in this business so that`s only natural. If I ever get any better at remixing, I`ll definitely redo these tracks and fix my mistakes. Thanks for the constructive criticism, btw. XD

EDIT: Also, I dunno how to pan or input vibrato/portamento on my samples with SNESGSS (heck, I dont even know if it registers it or not), so that might be tough to do tbh.

Don't take any of the criticism you're about to receive too rough. In the end, we're here to help you better yourself. MercuryPenny made good valid points. There's a reason I nominated you. Continue no matter how much criticism you receive bc you can only get better.

Yeah, I know, and I appreciate that. But I think that I`ll try and adjust the volume in my remixes so I can give it more polish. If there is any other problems, please tell me so I can try and fix them. XD

EDIT: Yeah, I think that I know what`s happening, and its not the SNESGSS files; its actually the SPC which is way louder than usual. I think that I`ll put a warning to lower the volume of the SPC or their speakers instead so people wont be startled when they listen to my remixes. Well... unless there is a way to fix this without putting a warning. If there is, then I`ll at least try to fix this and (hopefully) do this before C3 ends.

<Theultimate12> Fuck, I got probably one of the best ports I have made, and I cant upload this to C3 because of double posting rules... *sigh*
Hey, this is pretty interesting. I've heard of SNESGSS before, but I noticed you also included txt files. Did you create those txt files manually after making the port in SNESGSS, or did you use some kind of a conversion tool?

Are those SPCs from SNESGSS as well or are they SMW ports which you have inserted in SMW?

Were there any limitations you bumped into while playing around with SNESGSS? Such as missing SPC-700 features and all.
My blog. I could post stuff now and then

My Assembly for the SNES tutorial (it's actually finished now!)

1. Well, I actually used a conversion tool (SPC to MML) to make the .txt files out of the SPCs I created and then tested it in AMKGUI to see if the txt files can be portable to SMW.

2. I do say this a little bit above, but yeah, basically, they are the ports that I put after I finished converting the original SPCs into SMW.

3. Well, the only notable limitation that I found is that there is no echo, but I barely need that anyway unless I want to make a remix of a ice level or other stuff that has echo, in which case I am waiting to make this after a tracker called SNES Tracker gets released (if you want echo, you may want to alternate between SNESGSS and other methods, like OpenMPT + SNESMOD).

EDIT: And most MIDI files arent exactly gonna work with SNESGSS, and even then its not gonna be guaranteed if you get a MIDI that isnt out of tune, but that may be the SNES`s limitations and not SNESGSS, I am not sure (well, at least the MIDI not working part; you can easily fix the out of tune notes in SNESGSS, I just dont know exactly every note to fix). XD
