My third hack, first (hopefully soon to be) published - "Lap's Wraith; ReformCraft II"

Kaizo

So..um... never really made a forum post like this before

I have a video of me beating on youtube, before I submit the hack, I just want to make sure that it is appropriate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZZ-dO7Zyrg&feature=youtu.be

Also, I don't understand how to use ExGFx to fix the glitched graphics of the boos and eeries for the reznor fight. Will this glitched graphics thing prevent my hack from being accepted?

Also, I would call it a hard kaizo level, I don't think light kaizo allows for slowdowns...does it?

Seems nice, but the level is a bit bland, with some parts looking repetitive. Mainly the shell jumping shown in the first half of the level. Also, I don't think you need to use ExGFX to fix the graphics. You probably just have the wrong graphics file for the room. First, click this #lm{sgfxby} then in SP4 slot, just scroll down/up to find the number 11. Then, there you go! (I say "I think" because I'm not sure if the reznor GFX use the SP4 slot.)

Good luck with this, and I hope it gets accepted! #smw{:peace:}
Even for a kaizo standard, this is not very good. I would call it kaizo since you often ask for shell and podoboo jumping from the player, but in contrast many other sections are a lot easier and rather tedious and extremely repetitive (like the thwomp with smashers room). Also there's cases of cheap difficulty (the hops very close to spikes you do to climb the switch stairs in the very first room). The fact that one of the rooms is almost exactly Wendy's Castle may also be a problem.
There's also some really weird decisions, like the completely pointless red switch

The obstacle design is really not that thoughtful all around, but I guess that alone wouldn't get your hack rejected. Anyways, know that your skill has a lot of room for improvement! Keep practicing and you'll get there. Cheers
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
It's not pretty good for our standards. While it does ask for the player to act in do-or-die situations, it's basically composed of cheap jumps and blatantly edited rooms, since I can recognize one room as Wendy's Castle and another as a more repetitive than fun version of Valley Fortress. You did have some nice ideas here and there, but given the structure of the rooms themselves, they could've been worked out better. Also, I'm not sure what's the point of hitting the blue switch just to hit the red one to be honest
The only solution I can think to solve the Reznor battle problem is to change the level mode to 00, spread sprite A9 four times and place the generators you want to put, not forgetting to change the slot pertaining to SP3 to 25. They only act on the upper corner of the level, so you must work around that.

You do have potential to improve on the design area. Just keep practicing your skills that you'll get there, and play a few Kaizo hacks to gain inspiration and eventually do far thoughtful obstacles. Good luck man!

By the way, this is definitely a Kaizo hack (and a light one, since it doesn't require that heavy of a slowdown than a hard hack), so I'm moving it to the appropriate subforum.

You can put [url [/url tags to make links clickable. I already fixed it for you.

EDIT: Okay... First I'd like to say that technically, kaizo light is easier than the original kaizo Mario. But none of us follow that rule lol

Yeah I hear the tz sounds too, but that's no big deal. The big deal is not the graphics either. It's the design of this. I think you can feel which parts are "better" and which are worse. I assume the worse ones are there because you ran out of ideas. In that case, it's better to delete them than to leave them in just to take up space and time.

There are some creative parts in here and I hope you pick them out and remove anything that is too repetitive. This is a normal process. Many times I am dissatisfied with my own work. I redo the parts of it that I don't like, and just like a revised essay, it becomes much better.

Lol yeaa we don't follow that rule :P brb gonna go finish my kaizo-light hack now with walking stair clips and arbitrary execution :D

So yeah, as far as the hack goes, yes there's some uninspired parts but don't worry, keep practicing and making levels and you'll absolutely get better!! One thing I would keep in mind is try to keep the difficult consistent. Like, try not to switch your emulator settings around too much. Don't keep it at 100% with few savestates but suddenly it start using 25% speed or frame advance. The level you made is very inconsistent difficulty wise, like that double shell jump is way harder than anything else, you went from quite a difficult maneuver to a very easy section that involved dodging sparkies. And yes, technically, there has been a kaizo-light hack that uses double shell jumps (cough PANGA cough) but generally you should keep the difficulty consistent as far as each individual level goes. Obviously, you'll want a difficulty curve for the entire hack, making each new level harder than the next.
Ah ok, thank you for the feedback.

Overall I need to:

-Keep difficulty consistent
-Edit rooms better
-Throw out worthless ideas (such as the red room)

--------
I have good ideas for the 3rd installment though.

Just a question before I start on it; can the "room type" (such as athletic, overworld, etc) range from different types, like underground then castle?

As long as the rooms themselves aren't poor on creativity and cohesiveness, then I don't see why not.
