ExAnimation Tutorial

Welcome to the Exanimation Tutorial by x-treme!

I will be using this ExGFX http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=showexgfx&id=1023

You will need:

Graphics to ExAnimate
Lunar Magic

1. Graphics
Insert the ExGraphics that you need for the Exanimation first!!!!!!

Press the Red poison mushroom. At the bottom, you should see something that says:

“GFX file to extend animated tile area”

Enable ExGFX bypass, and select the ExGFX file in the the “GFX” listbox.
It should look something like this now:

Close the ExGFX Bypass and open the 8x8 editor and press Ctrl+Shift+Page Down.
You can now look at the ExAnimation pages and the Mario poses! But you can’t edit them.Go down to page 5. You should see your GFX there:

There we go! Now time to ExAnimate it.

2. ExAnimating Graphics

Press the Breakable SMB3 Block. You should see this:

The first list box is the animation entry. Using up all 1F entries will crash the level.
The second list box is when the animation shows.
Not used - This is self explanatory.

Normal - All the time.

POW Activated - Frames 1-8 is when the POW is NOT activated. Frames 9-16 are when it is activated.

Sliver POW Activated - See above.

ON/OFF Activated - Frames 1-8 = ON. Frames 9-16 = OFF.

The last list box is the type of animation. Is it a tile, or a palette?

I’ll choose Entry 00, Normal Animation, and Single 8x8.

Destination - What tile number will it be on in the 8x8 editor. I’ll choose C0.

Frames 1-8 - What to show on frames 9-16. Write the tiles from page 4 - 5 on the 8x8 editor

Frames 9-16 - You should know.

The buttons at the bottom should also be self explanatory.

In the first textbox, I’ll type in 580, in the second one, 582, 584 for the third one, and 586 in the last one.
Now if I press 4 Frame copy, It will copy the first 4 frames and put them in the next 12 frames.
It should look like this now:

You should also see a animated tile on tile C0 on the first page.
Keep doing this for the other tiles. Here are the ones I did.

And there you go! You should see the tiles there! Just map the Map16 tiles and you’re done!

3. ExAnimating Palettes

This is easier. Open the palette editor and the exanimation editor.
In the palette editor, if you hover over a color, you will see that it says the SNES color address for the color.
So in the Exanimation Editor, instead of Single 8x8, select Palette, and instead of tile numbers use SNES color numbers.

And there we go! Thats the tutorial, comments and questions are always welcome.
A note: The 8x8 tile numbers are found by using CTRL SHIFT PAGE DOWN in the 8x8 editor and hovering your mouse over the tiles.

I hear you can ExAnimate full 16x16 tiles, but I've never worked with that before.

Yea, this works, but this is the long way to do it. It's much easier and takes up far less slots to animate using either the Four 8x8's: Line or Four 8x8's: 16x16. (The Line option is the preferred.) Instead of using 4 slots to animate a single tile, it will only take 1 slot. However, you MUST have yr exanimation tiles laid out correctly. Hint: look at how the original animation tiles are laid out:

(Tile's individual 8x8's):
top-left,top-right,bottom-left,bottom-right

all in a single line. After all, when using animation styles that are larger than a single 8x8, that is how the animation is read: as a line of four 8x8's.

This will save a LOT of room in yr exanimation slots and you will most likely never even exceed 10 slots of animation.
EDIT: Nevermind, I think I figured out what I needed.

You know what the weird thing is? I didn't read or see any tutorial on how to make ExAnimation. No. I opened Brutal Mario and did a 'Connect-the-dots' method. Where I figured out how to do things using that hack as an example.

Interesting to see how different are some people in some little things. I read not only one ExAnimation tutorial before, but I couldn't do anything with the animation, I got stuck at many parts. I don't know why, but somehow my brain couldn't understand the sentences. :D This was the first tutorial for ExAnimation, that I understood at last. And it helped a lot, thanks x-treme!

Interesting, that's actually how I learned how to do Palette Animation. That was the one aspect of ExAnimation I could never understand for the longest time until I looked at Brutal Mario in LM in more detail.
I found this very useful, nice tutorial! :)

Weird. I inserted the ExGFX for animation correctly. I even used the file FF like he did, but when I look at the graphics they're garbled.

Am I aloud to exanimate the normal 8x8 tiles? All I want to do is change the turn blocks (Which I edited and patched to act and look like SMB3 blocks) so that they shine.

Also; This was a very good tutorial!

No, you can't. But you can copy the tiles you want to a empty ExGFX file and use that as the ExGFX. :)

How would I put them on the map 16 page?

Progress
Current hack: Super Mario 63 Demo (name to be changed)
World 1: 100%! :D
World 2: 80%
Overall Progress (for demo): 90% Almost there!

Demo to be released soon!
You don't yet. You see that box that said "destination"? That is what tile(s) in the 8x8 section it will exanimate. Then make your block in map16 use those 8x8 tiles and it will be animated (if you did the animating right).

How exactly do I animate 4 4x(8x8) tiles in the newest version of Lunar Magic?
