Chess Tournament - Groups, Rules and Discussion (Round 3/Finale started)

Link Round 2
Link Round 3/Final

Well than ladies and gentleman, it is finally time to let the games begin. First of all, I wanna thank everyone who signed up. We got a lot more people than I originally expected (serisouly, I was aiming for like 10).
So, let us Talk about how this is going to go down now, shall we.

Setup:

We will be playing over multiple rounds. All of which are round-robin based (if you wanna know why, it's because I dislike KO-systems. If the two best players face off in the first round it doesn't really seem like the one who then gets second place actually deserves it...).
Round-robin means you'll be playing agains each person within your group. The winner and loser will be noted in the tables below. Once all games are concluded the best 2 of each group with 5 players and the best 3 of the goups with 6 players will advance to the next round.

The thus selected 16 players will again be divided into 4 groups with 4 players each. Again, it's all on all. The best 2 of each group advance yet again to the final round.
The thrid and final round, with 8 players is just one group and will select the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place based on how many games have been won.

So in total, if you manage to stay alive till the last round, you'll play between 5+4+8=17 or 6+4+8=18 games.

How to play:

As playing platform, I propose this site.
In general, a game usually is setup as fast chess with a timelimit of 10 minuts per player. A match consisting of a best of three game style, that is to say, you play the same person until one of you has two wins. Which side you get to play should be random.

You can start a game simply by going to http://en.lichess.org/, select "Play with a friend" and then have the setup look like this:

Then, just hit random and send your partner the link.
There are no draws. If you get a draw, you'll have to play again.
Once a person has won, please contact me on IRC or via PM so I can update the tables.

HOWEVER!!!
I have virtually no way of checking how or even if you played, so if both sides agree on different settings, you can go ahead and do that too. Like, you can even use other means of playing if you dislike the site or anything, so long as both sides agree on it. Just see this as the default setup which you should be playing by. Though... at least stick to playing standard chess please.
Note, in case you want to use different setting: The "Increment in seconds" stands for how many seconds get added to your time when you make a move. Everything else should be pretty self explaining.

Badges:
In order to get a badge, you simple have to actually finish the round the badge belongs to. Also, you can drop out at any point if you want to and you'll fall back to the last badge you earned.
Note, you only get one badge that is being upgraded if you get into a higher rank.

Participate in the default round and finished all your games
Made it into the second round and finished all your games
Made it into the final round and finished all your games
Third place in the final round
Second place in the final round
First place in the final round

IRC:
There is a channel on IRC for this tournament, #chess
You can use it to see who is online and maybe set a date for a game with the people from your group.

Dealine:
Generally, we are in no real rush to get this done with, but I also don't want it to be open end, so here is a deadline by which I want all of you to have finished the first round games (we're talking 5-6 games here, should be doable.

Hope that some of the opponents I'm paired with join IRC. I only know of two who do and it's easier if all join.
Hoping for second round, but I'm happy with whatever anyway. Good luck!
Good luck to all :D

also message me (groupie) when you're ready, I'm available
I'm excited for this! Good luck guys!

Also, PM me when you're ready to play with me. (Same group)

I have several questions:

But who specifically should we send the link to? a person in the group? and if we do, how will we be notified if the person is in the match? I'm assuming they'll pm you back about that but say you're offline, what will happen?

And whats all those groups with squares about?

I'm sorry if I'm asking too many questions, but I'm confused on what to do and stuff. But please answer, as I generally don't know what to do. I read the "How to play" box several times, and I'm still confused.

Good luck to all I guess! #smw{:TUP:}

You'd want to see who is available first. If you see a person from your group online, you can PM them to see if they are up for a game. If you're both available and have time, you can go to the site, create a new game and then send him/her the link. (Or the other party sends you a link).
This is generally why being on IRC (a chatroom) is your best bet for finding online people. If you don't know what IRC is, you can check some information here

Assuming you mean the tables, they are to keep track how many games you've won in your group.
Say, for example, you play and win against Final Theory, then I'd make a +1 entry in your row and Final Theory's column and a -1 entry in Final Theory's row and your column.
That way, when you look a person's row, you can see (by looking at the columns) who they played against and how the game concluded. The diagonals are grayed out because you can't play against yourself.

No problem. I'd rather you ask question when you have them than don't.

Let's start this. I like the idea of the groups and the round-robin style (even if I would've found an tournament more thrilling).

I'm either available right now, or tomorrow (or later). In a couple of hours I'll not be able to do things on the comp, but feel free to PM me to discover a time when we can play ^~^
I'm ready now, i made an IRC for my group
BTW, how does the point system work?

If you won 2 matches against 1 opponent, do you have to play a 3rd round as well or can you just leave it like that?

Since a 3:0 win would make it different from a 2:1 win.

This would also avoid ties more easily.

It would be weird if just the wins instead of matches won/lost would be counted within a group.

I think you meant "channel", not "IRC". Unless you actually started your own IRC server for this which would be WAY over the top.
Back to topic, you don't have to make a channel for your own group (though you can), just join on #chess and see who's online there.

The system is best of 3. In other words, who won the most matches after 3 have been played is the total winner. As such, if you've won 2 a third match is no longer necessary.

Essentially what you refer to is a tripple round robin, where you play agains each person 3 times and have each game be put into the table.
However, we're doing a single round robin (only play against each person once) with each match being a best of 3.

Also, draws can always happen.

Correcting myself here, it's not -1 but 0 if you lose and 1/2 for draws (if there were any)

Question: What happens if you can prove you were available for a round but your opponent wasn't before the 19th? Do you get disqualified, or is the absent opponent considered forfeit?
I'll be on the IRC channel whenever I'm available.

That said however, I have to say that from the 26th to the 29th I won't be able to do any chess matches because reasons (unless I tell otherwise on IRC).

If a person knows he can't make it till the deadline beforehand, I don't mind extanding it for them. However, if someone just disappears with us being unable to contact them, they might get disqualified, in which case, the matches played with the party will probably be voided.

Anyway, I dare say there is planty of time to get together for like half an hour to play some games.
And as I said before, if both parties agree, you can change the rules, so if you absoultely can't get together, I suggest people just play a match via PM using the LM icons or whatever.

Sorry, but I think I'm going to have to drop out. (thats a final) I'm not going to ask to make everyone conform to my rules (Correspondence only, for common and frequent net issues) and for the deadline to be pushed back for it.

Have fun though, everyone else! :) I got to play one match (correspondence) vs lolyoshi, but we're just ditching that, so don't count my win point on that, because we aren't going to play the others.
(We might, but not in the context of the tournament)

Watching my games, it looks like I focused more on eliminating the opposing players' pieces instead of checkmate.

Also, while not official, AMHunter and I decided to have a game, and he destroyed me literally; he got 3 queens, one of which I killed and he responded by killing all of my pieces. All of them. Talk about brutal.
