Well, things sure did escalate quickly here didn't they?

So, Scarlet Devil Mario 2. Its my current favorite Japanese hack (right behind BM), despite its absurd difficulty. The first one just infuriates me too much.

Well, the first game did repeat its level ideas a bit much. Having the same core level concepts done four times was overkill.

So, thoughts on ASPE Mario in general?

Personally, I think it's a lot better made than most of the VIP games. Okay, it's shorter and has less content. But they were a lot better at cutting out the terrible stuff for this game, and restricting it to experts helped get a generally more polished, more cohesive game than the previous attempts.

It was cool to see someone other than carol take on boss design and programming too. As great as his work is, the community over there needs someone else with a fair bit of programming skill for the times he's busy with his own projects, to avoid another VIP 6 like headless chicken fiasco.

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.
About ASPE, i have the patch and i not play it yet
I just wonder if japanese hackers don't used the newest version of lunar magic?
Carol refused to use the newest Lunar Magic because provides more VRAM for GFX data for priority, but also reduces VRAM amount for tile alignment.
C'mon, many SMW hackers have done better than Carol, anonimzwx, by example, revolutionized the SMW hacking with Dynamic Z and Dyzen and Kipernal make AddmusicK.
SMW hackers don't use XKAS anymore and there are a Romi's spritetool with ASAR support. Did the japanese hackers used ASAR?

Please, don't BAN me for this post, i'm not insulting the SMW japanese hackers, i just want to make their hacks better.

I wasn't offended by anything you said, so don't worry about it.

Personally I like BM because the ASM and graphic rips are cool, that's really it to be honest. I wish Japanese hackers would use up to date tools, but alas, they don't.

You should probably start using Asar, but I'll spare your life... for now #tb{TwT}.

I Use AMM and BTSD

While I do highly suggest switching to AddmusicK because it doesn't break music and its a thousand times easier to use, I still use BTSD too. GPS has never worked for me for some stupid reason. Also, I apparently still have an old version of spritetool which uses xkas instead of Asar. I plan on switching soon, but I hope its not gonna be a pain in the bum to re insert all my sprites.

Well enough off-topicness.

I saw a video of a level from ASPE mario, and it looks kinda meh to be honest. Granted, I've only seen one level so I can't make a very good judgement.

EDIT: 1400 post hee yee

Probably depends on the individual and when they started working on their hack. Remember, Brutal Mario was started about a decade ago now. Even if carol wanted to switch over to all the newest tools and the latest version of Lunar Magic, it'd be an absolute pain to port everything over so it works with the new tools.

And for other old time ROM hackers there, same applies. Porting stuff to new versions of tools is a pain. So they don't bother for works that have been in development for years on end.

I suspect the people who just started with Lunar Magic and Mario ROM hacking in Japan use stuff like ASAR, current Lunar Magic, AddmusicK, etc.

Still, carol might start liking all these new tools soon. I mean, he's making some stuff for my own project, and that uses the latest version of Lunar Magic, AddmusicK and ASAR. So anything he contributes to Mario's Nightmare Quest will have to work with those tools.

Where can i find these platforms, and maybe the newest version of the Brutal Mario data folder?

That is really good to hear, I'm glad carol is back to smw hacking again ^-^, I hope he can release another demo or the full version of BM soon.

Apart from that, I wonder what carol will do for the next release of BM. I was trying to merge the stuff from previous demo into the 1-1 release (so I can play BM with all the latest stuff release), but it seems that there's no space left in the hack to put all the ExGFX and sprites together, since the hack size increased a lot with the ASMs and custom musics he coded lastly. I'm betting that the next release of carol's hack will expand ROM to 6MB or 8MB, because there's absolutely no freespace in his latest release.

That explains why he deleted all of the ExGFX in the latest known release (1-1): the lacking of freespace.

Anyways what does carol still need to do? I heard he was remaking some poor levels, improving Koopaling bosses to look like the ones from 7 hero demo, finishing World 9 and making the last boss. But time passed, so probably BM is really next to the final release hopefully.

I really would like to have his contact, but I guess I'll have to wait for that xD.

@IanBoy141: I think these platforms are these ones from the first link of carol's website: Line lift

And from what I know there's no new release of that "data" folder...
Which is the currently version of ASPE Mario?

This Coin don't appeared

Try either:

Or:

They're right on top of his website:

Well, that's a good question.

Expanding the ROM would help, but then a lot of tools don't really work that well with larger ROM sizes. So there's a trade off there.

As for what's left? Well, he wants to improve a decent amount of the early level and boss design, so there's that. And the aforementioned world 9, with a lot more content and lots of extra boss battles and gimmicks.

But he might have stuff to do outside of making the game, which explains why it's been a bit slow going.

Is there a mirror of that site for when it keeps going down?

Heck, if you want better hosting, I can always help with that. I'm already asking carol about whether I could host his own site on a more reliable domain.
