C'mon yo, for 2003's standards that shit was dope. #smw{:trollface:}

Are the levels in that hack based on states?

That seems like a dope idea for a hack though. You could name it Mario Takes America or something.
Just hack BurgerTime and replace the main character with Mario #wario{;)}

I think Intrigue is worth mentioning.

It has item babysitting, floating munchers, gray cement blocks, it was the exact stereotype everyone makes fun of now.
I just found a hack list from 2005 on acmlm. Oddly enough, I'm fairly sure I looked at that page many years ago while looking for info about Lunar Magic and SMW hacking (this may have been before the Great Wipe on SMWC.) Back then, a new overworld was considered a custom feature while today it's essentially required.

-The first 10 stages of Cool or Cruel, in terms of aesthetics. It's still fun to play, really memorable, and countless Kaizo hacks took inspiration from its design, but it has a lot of breaks, floating/stacked Munchers (particularly The Level 1 and Forky) and occasional cutoff and glitched sprites. I think this is why the newer episodic stages look a lot more polished.
-Bowser's Ruins, that 1-level Kaizo hack that numerous LPers tried to play. I don't really remember much of it except it was painful to watch the constant load-stating on precision jumps for eons on end. The walls made of turn blocks allowed one to bypass much of the second and third rooms easily enough.
-Chaos CompleXX, just because we don't accept joke hacks into the database.

Any of my hacks that predate the current release of "The Fourth Sector", I would they're horribly dated as well.
