Super Mario World: Over the Mountain

Standard

If you were having problems playing Demo 2, please download Demo 2.1. I think I have fixed all of the issues causing people to be unable to play.

Hey all. I've been working on an SMW romhack called Super Mario World: Over the Mountain. Right now, Demo 2.1 has 7 levels. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could play it and give me some thoughts and critique. Especially on the level design.

Feel free to use my music in your own hack. Credit not needed, but it would be nice. #ab{8-)}

Overworld:

Levels:

Berry Fields:

Description:
The first level in the game! Mario starts his trek up the mountain with a pleasant jog
through a berry orchard. The morning sunrise paints beautiful colors through the sky.

Screenshots:

Forest Frolic:

Description:
A bustling forest filled with trees and saw-blades. Mario reaches a giant tree and has
to climb it to reach the tree tops. Will he make it in one piece?

Screenshots:

Chuck Crag:

Description:
As he reaches closer to the top of the mountain, things get a lot more rocky for our hero.
On this volcano, Mario must avoid lava, falling rocks, and as the name suggests, Chucks!

Screenshots:

Snowball Scuffle:

Description:
As he climbs higher up the mountain, Mario reaches a snowy area. Here he must use throw
blocks as ammunition in a snowball fight with a pack of persistent Chucks.

Screenshots:

Cloud-top Climb:

Description: Mario has made it to the top of the mountain, but it looks like he's not done
yet. He continues climbing up through the clouds! Bullet Bills shoot at him from all directions!

Screenshots:

Cumulus Cruise:

Description: Continuing through the clouds, Mario finds a horde of Koopas. Platforming
through the clouds is perilous! Meanwhile, the sun begins to set in the sky.

Screenshots:

Zero-G Zoom:

Description:
Mario finds himself in space being attacked by alien fighters. The low gravity allows him
to swim through the air and shoot fireballs straight forward, space-shooter style!

Screenshots:

Serene Seabed (Not in Playable Version):

Description:
Mario takes a dive in the ocean and swims around among the coral. Here, he encounters
some new fishy foes and some old enemies that are dressed the part!

This is great for a starter! I'm really impressed. Level design is pretty good. Items and powerups were very well placed, and the game in overall is very pleasing.

I've never heard the songs you used in game. Did you compose them? Because they sound very nice, too.

This is one of the BEST smw hacks I've ever played! I loved everything I saw. Really good job Lakitwo, I look forward to more! Some suggestions: add a few more floors to the overworlds to spice it up a little and in cloud top koopas, the yellow background clouds could be a little bit brighter. Other than those minor things, really well made. Welcome to SMWCentral!

I wanted to use music that isn't super common for romhacks. Nothing takes me out of the experience more than hearing music that is blatantly from another hack or is used super commonly. I didn't compose any of it, but I did sequence the midis and converted it myself to make sure it didn't sound too similar to anything out there already. Thanks for noticing!

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not quite sure what you mean though about more floors on the overworlds. Also, when you say the background clouds could be a bit brighter, do you mean that you were confusing them with the cloud you could land on? That's something I was actually worried about.
Sorry, I didn't think I was very clear #tb{:p}. By floors I meant hills basically. Something like this little snippet from my hack; In this pic I have 3 floors, although they don't need to be this tall or even this many floors. Also with the clouds you are correct. It's a little hard to tell them from the foreground clouds, so lightening them a little would give it a little more contrast.
Added screenshots of a new level, Snowball Scuffle, to the OP. The main concept behind this level is using throw blocks as ammo in a snowball fight!
Looks awesome, can't wait to play it!
I am willing to give this hack a try. The palettes are looking gorgeous, I really like that title screen, and the HDMA in the sky really makes the level more vivid.

Great job for a starter, Lakitwo!
My Inspiring Quotes on Personal Growth and Change:

"Resolved financial/personal problems equal greater growth!"

"The only constant thing in life is change; nothing is set in stone. The old is replaced with the new. Forgive yourself for past mistakes. When many different problems in your life are resolved (personal, financial, etc.), newfound strength and confidence is gained in the process. Usually, failures, lack of assertiveness, disappointments, incompetence, low self-esteem and lack of self-respect, financial struggles, and setbacks can cause us to change and take action to solve any problem, leading to increased strength and confidence. This you learn from experience.

I have been experiencing this aforementioned newfound strength and confidence myself for the past FOUR to EIGHT years or so, getting stronger with each passing year, learning with each mistake I make and becoming more joyful in the process. Because of this newfound confidence I've acquired over the years, finding my passion is of utmost importance in 2022! You can develop this strength and confidence in yourself as well!"

To whoever's reading this, you are amazing and you are capable of doing equally amazing things. Gather confidence and be yourself! Say goodbye to the old you and welcome the new you! It wants to arise every moment, but you don't let it. Learn from your mistakes and never make that mistake again! Find your passion and live it!"

Finding my passion in life, but I may still be active on SMWCentral from time to time. Still enjoy playing many hacks, but I'm widening my perspective on life and opening myself to the new.
I like the graphic edits you made to the snow level, they look super cute. I'm still looking forward to this!
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?

Thanks. As for the gradient on the sky, that's actually not HDMA at all. I used ExGFX to make several solid color tiles that I used in the background. My big goal with this hack is to allow it to be played on a real SNES without any extra chips or anything.

You can use HDMA and pretty much every ASM resource on the site right now and it will still work on a real SNES. There's no need to worry about that. Things like the titlescreen fade-in are also HDMA, for example.

Really? I know you can use ASM, as I've used a bit of it already, but I must have been misunderstanding what HDMA was. I'll definitely look into it then.
Updated the OP with a ton of new screenshots, and two new levels.

Forest Frolic: A bustling forest filled with trees and saw-blades. Mario has to climb a giant tree and proceed through the tree tops.

Zero-G Zoom: Mario finds himself in space being attacked by alien fighters. Here his fireballs shoot straight forward, space-shooter style!

By the way, I'm looking for serious critique and criticism. If you see something you like or dislike, I would really appreciate it if you could let me know!
How many levels you planning?

8 worlds. 4 levels per world with a 5th short, transitional level.
I'm also going to try and make a 9th bonus world that you need to get all the Dragon Coins to access.
Updated OP with level descriptions and level order(tentative). Also, from now on whenever I have an update, I'm going to post it in a new reply as well as update the OP.
Don't really have much to show for an update, but I am still working on it. Right now, I'm mostly fixing and finishing things I've already started, so I don't have much NEW to show.

I do have some screenshots of the second half of Forest Frolic.

Cool. Add some details to the tree interior BG, and play with the colors some more; they're... very bright. btw, do each layer of leaves scroll separately in the treetop BG?

EDIT: also, vines should probably be green. It'd make the whole area less brown and actually be logical.

I'll work on that stuff. I kinda agree about the vines.

Also, yeah. Every layer of leaves scroll separately.

For some reason I really like how this hack looks, good job!
