Oh duh.. haha I didn't realize that til I saw the different difficulty types. That's pretty sick tho. The fact that there are different difficulties is pretty cool. Are there going to be any difficulties that you unlock?
I have one in mind but what it does is currently a secret. What I can say is that it's a very much satisfactory reward for 100%ing the game.

As usual, the ASM work here seems pretty nice, so good job. The level is pretty nice too.
Also good luck trying to find teammates. Most (collab) hacks die trying to find people, I hope this won't end up with the same fate as them.

I love the idea of a BG using a 4th layer. I didn't even know such a thing could exist.
The only thing coming to my mind is that you could change your overworld (sorry if you mentioned doing that already) since it doesn't really fit the great style of your levels, I think it looks a bit too basic compared to the levels.

So did I get that right? There's going to be coop with 2 players simultaniously or is it just the normal SMW 2 player mode?
A real coop mode would be so awesome!

The plan is to eventually incorporate a mode 7 overworld, so the one you see is only a place holder. If the mode 7 map ends up being too much of a pain the OW will at the very least be updated to look nice. So either way it's not final.

Yes, that's pretty much the reason I started the project, actually. The next update will show off co-op gameplay and should give you a decent idea of how it's going to work.

Hello people. Longtime no talk. This project is still alive, but we've just been busy as of late. We've made a lot of progress, but we can't show everything just yet.

Team Välfärd
First, I'd like to talk about the team as of now. Currently it's von Fahrenheit, me, and Eminus. Von Fahrenheit is still the main dude while Eminus and I hopped into the graphics department. My job is to draw FG/BG and Eminus' job is to draw the sprites. We are still looking for someone whop is willing to do the music for the hack.
Of course, our jobs aren't just limited to drawing or ASM, we also design levels together, so don't think that music is all you're going to be doing. The more the merrier!

Overhaul of the SMW engine
Also, there are some big changes Von Fahrenheit is making to the game. He is completely rewriting the sprite engine for the hack. While it's sorta hard to show what it does, you can see it in action in the gameplay video (which should be up by this weekend).

We also are planning to have a demo out by C3. It will include all of World 1, so watch out for that when the time comes around!

Aggro Rex:
Remember this guy from the mushroom gorge video? Well Eminus drew some pretty rad graphics. I'd say he looks more fitting now.
You'll see more of him once the gameplay video is up. He is also dynamic because of how big his tiles are.
He has running, jumping, roaring, and climbing frames.


Hammer Rex:
Also courtesy of Eminus. He will be pseudo-dynamic, meaning his tiles will only be loaded when he appears on screen.

This is pretty much all we can show for now since most of the major things done were to the engine itself. (I'm not gunna show giant blocks of code... lol)

Things to look out for
- The first boss of the game also received a graphics overhaul. We think you'll like this boss when the demo comes out. ;)
- New characters! Eminus and I are drawing up some more playable characters for you guys! The purple koopa you see is just a placeholder still.
- Full levels, some gameplay, and more graphics. School has been super busy so updates won't really be normal until break comes by.
Could it be possible this demo hack feature these custom sprites?
Of course! All the things shown will be in the demo. There are lots of other things that are still in the works, so this won't be everything that'll be in the demo. The demo will also have at least one other playable character. Hopefully we can get the second one done in time for you guys to check out.
I'm talking about custom sprites to be downloaded (.asm and .cfg)

You wouldn't be able to use the sprites without the custom engine and a few other patches made for the project. Honestly I don't really have any plans to release ASM works from the hack simply because most of it is much too specific to be of use to anyone else.

This looks really cool, dude! One thing that I think could potentially make it better is if the Koopa had maybe one more ability because Mario is still objectively more powerful due to spin jump + the possibility of fireballs. What if he had something like the shell suit from the NSMB series, where you can run and then duck to go into your shell and attack enemies?

Of course, it's just a suggestion :P
I must say I like that like that level, the sprites, and the whole system of difficulty! How exactly does it affect the game though? Does it increase the speed of sprites?
Difficulty affects all enemies. It is the most noticeable during boss fights - which change drastically - but other enemies change as well. As an example the red rex takes 2 hits to beat on easy, 3 on normal, and on insane he takes 3 and is immune to spin jumps. He also moves faster depending on the difficulty.

If you get to a point where you need people to test the co-op function, the wife and I spend most of our evenings playing SMW after the kids go to bed anyway. It'd be nice to play it simultaneously.

But in all seriousness, I have an Nvidia Shield Android TV and I'd be happy to apply your patch and test out co-op mode using Android EMU's.

Whoop double post! We had to rush the demo to get it out during C3 and ended up cutting a lot of half-finished resources and an entire level. Curse of Eternal Night is an update patch that will add the cut content and fix all the bugs present in the first demo. We're gonna keep you guys updated with screenshots and such while we finish up everything. Check out the main post for more details.
