Super Mario Bros. + ::: Barren Sands 6

Standard

Deciding to name my current attempt at a hack after my first one. Mainly because I'm uncreative and was stuck for days on a name... Anyway... Ahem...

So, I'm making a hack and with a lot of help from the good ol' Lui37 and his magical flying pizza, it's going to have some c001 A5Ms (custom bosses mainly, but a few other nifty things too which he doesn't know about - or he does and I haven't quite told him he's gotta make it haha). If Lui37 and his magical flying pizza refuse to make anything (or he unexpectedly dies during the process of making this hack), said feature will not be in the hack. Anyway, enough of Lui37 and his magical flying pizza, onto my part.

If you're into complex, deep and fancy plots, you should leave this thread now and not come back. Why? Well, I had the greatest idea for a plot (totally 100 percent original) and it's this:

w0w s0 c001!!1

To go through a few other features:
- Mario can wall kick (I thought about ground pound to but getting that to work like modern games and have the next option seemed to much of a task so I didn't bother)
- like others, I'm using LX5's new fancy powerup stuff - not all of them, only the most fitting ones (ice flower, boomerang flower, hammer suit, shell suit and the leaf thingy)
- eight worlds and one bonus world unlocked after collecting all the star coins
- obvious generic grassland as first world
- obvious generic lava land as eight world
- obviously it's a SMW hack (if you think it isn't then you're fucking stupid)
- flag pole goal with some help from Lui37 and his magical flying pizza to keep layer 3 and HDMA on the goal routine
- pretty much every graphical element from the original game will be changed (even the smoke animation)
- I hope to have a custom soundtrack too... We'll see...
- you'll have to excuse but put up with shitty backgrounds like the cave and castle ones... I've never been any good at them and that doesn't seem to want to change

I thought about listing the world names and themes and going through all the rest of the shit you don't give a fuck about. But really all you came for is screenshots... So here you go!

Lime Meadows 1
Obviously the first level. Split into two sections - a grass half and a cave half. Most levels are split into two sections because of reasons further down. They usually have a little bit of difference to keep things fresh.

Lime Meadows 2
Second level of the hack has to be a cave. This one has nice Buzzy Beetles and Goombas. It also has a secret exit somewhere...

Lime Meadows Fortress
Every world has a fortress so here's your first one. Reznors are fortress bosses but they're great Reznors that you've never fought before. Lui37 and his magical flying pizza is who you have to thank!

Lime Meadows 3
Monty Mole lives here. Well, more than one. I have a weird bug with the ground dwelling ones that I can't change their palettes with Stear or Tweaker. So if you see any Monty-Blue-Breast, ignore them.

Lime Meadows 4
The wonderful mushroom level! Featuring red bouncy mushrooms, Fuzzy and line guides. Remind me to find a 32x32 Fuzzy for the next one.

Lime Meadows 5
Almost done! Introducing the Hammer Bro. here. He has other brothers such as Fire and Boomerang, but they don't live nearby. Maybe look in the desert for them?

Lime Meadows Castle
Every world has a castle... Duh! Castle bosses are Koopa Kids (w0w 0r1g1nal) and I think this one is Lemmy if I remember correctly. I can't remember what I decided. All castle levels are vertical and they are not split into two sections. This makes them a little trickier for reasons below unless you can find some secret rooms... This level's gimmick mainly revolves around wind and that on/off switches change the direction.

So, why are the levels split? Because no midway points. I fucking hate midway points - well, placing them anyway (they're useful in other hacks, though). Instead, I've used a patch that does something similar to SMB2. Released some C3s ago by: none other than Lui37 and his magical flying pizza!

Oh and as a bonus you can have this:

Yes I even changed those. How fun.

Anyway, that's all (all? That's loads) I have for today. I'm working on this whenever slowly or fastly depending on what day it is, what direction the wind is going and whether it's a full moon or not. So, progress will come whenever.

Yep.
Wow, this looks pretty sweet. You could change the HDMA in the underground pipe zone, though it's just a suggestion.
I do also believe that this is a nice looking hack. I'm curious to see what will coming next.

Lime Meadows Castle's background doesn't look that bad as you might say (it shouldn't be placed in the main part of the castle though). I think in a sewer level, it could fit very well.

The wind tile is strange when we can't see the animation.

If you still searching for an "original title" for this hack, how about Super Mario World: The Magical Flying Pizza?
I'm tired so I'm gonna make this quick I guess.

The graphics look really boring due to the awfully dull colors - everything looks grey - and how almost everything has the same texture (the pipes and the columns in the castle background don't and that's it).

There's horrible pillow shading in some places (e.g. goombas, koopas, piranhas, though there obviously are more examples) and the fact that things such as lava and mario's fireballs have solid black outlines only makes things worse. Also I really don't think you should use clouds with grey outlines if you're not trying to convey some sort of rainy atmosphere or something moody like that. Uhhh some of the enemy "changes" feel fairly pedantic (like how you didn't change the rexes at all, you just gave them a boring recolor and reshade).
The use of current blocks in a level that's not underwater is coolio though

Don't read this in a super serious intonation or anything maybe I should've used smileys idk

inb4 wow ur so offensive im literally triggered and shaking right now my breathing is staggered it doesnt look bad its an art style im dying

...

really what i mean with the above is that pls don't turn this into another deviantart-tier discussion thread ain't nobody got time for that shit

zzz

ew gross, it's tahixham

I find myself agreeing with a lot of what Magiluigi said, especially the part about how a lot of the color seems under-saturated. Maybe that's just because I'm the most flaming heterosexual male you'll ever see and I fucking love bright colors, but it definitely does look like you could stand to brighten some of the shades up a bit. I think this definitely shows with the coins and star coins, as the tones you used are so close to each other that they hardly stand out.

Eh.

Color shit aside, this does look promising regardless. Can't knock the use of a simple story because hey; it works, and the levels themselves look pretty interesting. I especially like your use of the current-blocks and pipes in the cave section, that in and of itself could add an extra layer of difficulty. The classic flagposts are pretty neat, and so are the extra power-ups.

Overall, this hack seems pretty neat so far. Aside from some graphical aspects, it looks like it's been designed fairly well.
This project is ok. Thanks to gamma V for the graphics. How many levels will be in this hack?

Which section do you mean? And would you suggest to change it to? I've always been fond of making the whole area slightly duller with HDMA if it's underground.

They're supposed to act as columns, but I'll see what I can do.

I completely agree with how dull everything looked and I've been through and brightened it all up. Take a look further down.

Some have yet to be changed properly and all. Not got around to all of it yet!

I disagree. I see no reason why pipes can't blow wind out of them outside of water too. Ignore that, I thought you didn't like the idea, haha. Thanks!

Nah, I really appreciate your comments. It's nice to see there are still users about who know how to give feedback other than "l00k5 gr8! i want more!!!1". Thanks!

I agree. Like I said to Magiluigi, take a look further down and you can see the new colours.

Thanks! The wind is intended as just another feature of the hack - just as you find coins and ? blocks in levels, you'll find wind in levels too - not every level, but quite a few use it somehow.

Thanks very much!

So, with responses aside, I can show new stuff. I try to only post when I have new stuff to show as I don't want to get caught out having to double post. Anyway, your new colours:

Also, more progress! The secret level of Lime Meadows, Lime Meadows A. This is accessed via Lime Meadows 2 and actually takes you to world six, Sunny Shores. Bit of a leap, I know. But everyone loves a good bonus, right?

Yes, there are very steep slopes. That ! switch is an on/off switch, but a different one to the conventional block. This hack features both. The clouds in the outside also use parallax scrolling - thanks to HDMA stuff in Effect Tool.

Yep, that's all for now!
So... It's been a long while since I saw you starting a hack (Think it was Ogg? Nog sure though) and I'm dazzled by the progress I'm seeing. If I could give you one suggestiom, it'd be to make sure your grasland levels are more distinct from eachother (1-1 and 1-3 primarily) Changing the sprites is one thing, but even adding a different decoration type or changing the palette a bit can make the level more recognizable I think.

Best of luck with building your levels! I'll keep track of this :3
Haha, Ogg! I remember Ogg... what "fun" times #ab{:[} There was a hack between Ogg and this - Mario in the Infu Kingdom - that got quite close to completion before being cancelled.
I'll see what I can do about decorations. I tried to have some levels have big trees (ie, Lime Meadows 5) and stuff for differences.

Days off mean progress... So I present to you the first level of Barren Sands! Featuring Venus Fire Traps, Pile Driver Micro-Goombas and Fire Snakes. Also, this level features the raccoon leaf as a powerup but the next level introduces a new powerup... Wait and see!

Got carried away with the screenshots again. Ignore the fact that Mario has different graphics for the raccoon leaf, I haven't changed those yet.

That's all for now!
Looking nice. It reminds me very much of the NSMB series.

I'm sure you noticed, but the image of Mario in the status bar you're using in some images is off in terms of his palettes. Here are the images I've seen that are affected: here.

mario, are you k? u luk ill

Good work though, especially since everything looks very consistent [one tone, very flat looking]!

Are you using the NSMB2 question wide-blocks?
I feel that this blocks doesn't affect the enemies when you hit the block from above.
I hope that this hack doesn't end like your cancelled hack Ogg.

I wish good luck on your hack.
Yeah! Great work Tahixham!#smw{:peace:}

Thanks! It's kinda the feel I'm going for with the NSMB thing. Also, I know Mario is all dodgy. That's the last player GFX I need to get sorted.

No, I just have wide ? blocks that do nothing at all.

Anyway, I have more progress! We enter Barren Sands 2 now, introducing Spike and the wonderful Boomerang Flower which is my favourite powerup of them all (well, in the hack, Frog Suit is obviously the best). Anyway, I've also got those funny pink pipe things from SMB3, but they're yellow and more claustrophobic here - I kinda like them like that and they work well with Spikes. Let'sa go!

Looking good! I have one slight worry; given how cramped the area is, wouldn't the left Spike be difficult to kill without a Fire Flower?

Apart from that, the aesthetic is perfect, just like the last level.

Also, just a suggestion, but, maybe, to vary the surroundings (since they're exactly the same as the last one), you could perhaps make this one take place at night? I dunno, it might help vary the world, given that with desert-themed worlds you don't have many choices in where you can go (outside, pyramid/temple, oasis).

Don't mind me though. I'm looking for something to say that isn't "WOW COOL BRUH" or "Does this hack have custom music?"

I'm liking it regardless.

Now, make me that sun level!

Surprisingly, it's easier than it looks. They're quite easy to jump on as I left two tiles gap above them.

That gave me an idea to throw in a nighttime desert level like SMB2 did. But I think I'll throw it in later on in the world. I've got a few ideas to vary the levels such as a totem pole themed level like NSMB2 did, as well as a sewer.

Onwards with the hack and I now have the aforementioned sewer level finished - Barren Sands 3! I had planned for this level to be a bit more complex with two paths that you can cross between and having about eight small sections to the whole thing. Instead, I got bored of the level idea and did two paths that you can deviate between - so it's still quite non-linear. And as this level has a secret exit, you get a great opportunity to play both paths. The path you take doesn't alter your exit, however. The secret is hidden once the two paths rejoin. Anyway:

I only did one path here as lazy.

Next is Barren Sands Fortress. Expect that in the next few days.
I like this level tahixham!#smw{^_^} How's the progress of the hack going on?

holy fuck did you even read his post

As always, nice work! I completely forgot that you could go to the sewer - NSMB DS it, and so did you! The only thing I can say is maybe you should put some kinda of visual decoration in there that goes in the "black void" areas, like bones or something. Makes it less... blank.
