I'm proud to present my new SMW hack, The World of Mario.
Unlike my previous hack "Marmar Mario", this one will have custom sprites and a storyline! #tb{:D} But development is nowhere near 5% finished. The first level and the title screen are 50% complete and I haven't been started developing on the rest of the hack. Screenshots may be released sooner or later.

The first level is titled "Hammer Bro. Land", since the level has Hammer Brothers in it. Sometimes I fail to stomp on them because of their hammers, so I put Fire Flowers near where each of them should be. But I hope to work on the rest of the hack! I'm looking forward to your thoughts! #tb{;)}

I'll try capturing the screenshots, and if I do I will be happy to put them on this thread.

EDIT: Finally uploaded them. May have a few palette problems due to the background. I would fix these problems if possible. I'm also planning to add YI Goombas in the next level.


The title screen. Still need to change the title screen level.


The intro. I'm thinking of using VWF Cutscene Tool for this one.


The overworld. I can't think of a decent or fancy name for this one.


The first section of the first level. The foreground clouds may blend in with the background clouds, so I added ! Blocks to where each pit should be. I also added Fire Flowers to where each Hammer Bro. should be. These should be removed in later releases.


Using the power of fire to defeat a Hammer Bro.


Died from one of another Hammer Bro.'s hammers. #tb{:(} Plus there's a pipe that has the wrong colour.

I'm also thinking of changing the HUD and the ! Block graphics and using Dracula Duck for the first boss. Hope I fix the problems soon. #ab{:S}

It might help the player if you either make the cloud platforms more seeable, or use a different tileset for the foreground. I know you said it'll be subject to change, but at this state it'll be hard to see where to go, as the cloud platforms blend with the background. Otherwise, something bugging me. Hammer Bros really aren't a "level one" type enemy. I recommend you at least use blocks to make it easier for the player, as the bros can be tricky.

About the cloud platforms, where is the cloud GFX located? I can't find it. If you find it, tell me the GFX file with the cloud has some other stuff too so that'll give me a better chance to find it. Also for the different tileset, I'm not sure about that. And finally for the Hammer Bros., I can't add blocks since the BG palette makes them look horrible in the level.

EDIT: Better screenshots for the first section of the level. The clouds look better.

Then I realized I had to drag the Hammer Bro. away from the section, put a Goomba in its place and remove the vine. Here's what it looked like after I done it:

Thanks for saying it is good! Oh, and about the BG gfx, I got it from this link. I'm editing the credits right now, I'm taking credit for Nep-Enut for this one. I couldn't get the FG gfx that came with it to work, not even when I inserted the ExGFX or the Map16 data so I just put clouds instead.

Blue-ish cloud outlines would fit more, but it looks much better now. Not bad for a start.
I'm digging this hack so far for a beginner. I'm inclined to agree that green cloud outlines don't make any sense given the context of the level, but at least it looks better on the eyes. Just be sure to add coins and the likes to not look empty aesthetically. The map, as it is right now, is quite simple to build and you could add more hills and fitting decorations. Otherwise, looking forward for more screens from you!

I can't however as the coins and ? Blocks and stuff may have their palettes messed up from the BG.

Hmm...I could go with the ledge/dirt tile solution.
EDIT: OK I can't find the inside-out bottom-right and bottom-left corner tiles for the grass tileset, which makes it more difficult to get rid of the cement blocks and replace them with ledge/dirt tiles for me. Which direct Map16 access tiles were they again?
