Mario's Nightmare Quest

Standard

Yeah, I know what you mean.

I just find it weird how I ask for help on a project that's got a ton of content and cool things already shown and get nothing, while people post an empty topic with a few random sentences and seemingly get ten people offering services within the hour.

People seem to really like this hack as far as wanting to play it goes, but they're less keen in actually contributing to it.

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.
I know the feeling myself. I can post something and get barely any responses at all, and another guy who appears to have no experience will get a ton of responses. I think that's one of the biggest reasons why people leave the community/stop hacking.

I would off to help, but I'm incredibly busy with RL stuff at the moment, so I'm not available until August 3rd. Come that time, if you still need help, I'll be more than happy to offer you my 7+ years of level design experience. #tb{^V^}

Otherwise, everybody, flock over and help this man! This is more or less a collaborative project and people love collabs. How is this not getting attention or at least answers? It's really puzzling.

Well, you can certainly help if part 1 is still in development in August. If not? Well, there's always part 2. That one's got the more 'quirky' level ideas.

I would love to help...but I've already got a project I'm working on and I still need to finish up another, and I'm not a huge fan of manually working with MAP16 tiles. Hope you can grab a few supporters that don't just say "nice work".

To be fair, you don't need manually place map16 tiles in this game. I've assembled the map16 into objects which get placed as one piece in the levels (this also saves space in the ROM).

But hey, I don't blame anyone if the complexity of the graphics puts them off contributing. These are very, very fancy tilesets, so you'll need a bit more effort to make them look good than you would for say, the square SMB 3 fortress blocks.

I generally tend to prefer collaborations that have some sort of common direction or style, something that ties everything together nicely. I just don't see that with Mario's Nightmare Quest; it goes wherever it pleases. I know there are people out there who don't mind that sort of approach, but I am generally a stickler for consistency, and it just does not sit well with me when I'm playing a Castlevania-based stage one moment, and entering a Legend of Zelda stage the next.

I wouldn't say a lot of the graphics look that complex, more the fact that many of them just aren't as flexible as vanilla graphics (lacking in slopes, foreground ledges, etc.), which limits the landform variety. Assuming you've arranged your Map16 in a user-friendly manner that makes it easy to understand what tile is flat ground, what's a ledge corner, etc., making levels out of them shouldn't be difficult for most users.

Eh, I see what you mean by it not having a specific 'consistency', but given the contributions to games like Mushroom Kingdom Fusion and Super Mario Fusion Revival, I'd expect some people to be willing to contribute to something with a similar feel in ROM hack form. Guess most of those people seem to prefer Game Maker...

As for them being as flexible... well, most have normal and upside down slopes of two varieties, so there's that. And most have a ton of decoration and nice objects to use. The only thing they're really missing (and only then sometimes) is foreground ledges.

Thanks! You'll be happy to know that the level shown above leads into an icy version too, with fog and snow effects and ice themed enemies and gimmicks.

Thanks!

If you like nice graphics, you will love the hell out of this game. It's aesthetically one of the best SMW hacks ever made.

But it's not gonna be just that. It's going to be a fun game too, to the point that I want the level design and gameplay to be as great as the graphics are detailed.

is that water L3 or something, because the transparency looks incredible.

It's layer 3.

Having trouble animating it though. Seems like the animations always mess up when applied to layer 3 tiles. And it'll need about 16 or so frames of animation to work like in the original game.

But it looks decent enough in game at the moment.

Is this graphics from Hotel Horror (inside)?
Will you release the graphics today, C3 or when the hack is done?

All of this game's graphics will be released when the relevant section is done.

So when part 1 is done, I'll release that graphics used for that (I have permission from Shikaterniato release his GFX as ExGFX, and I'll probably be able to get permission from Kopejo easily as well). So later this year, you'll get the following:

Grass Land tileset (Kopejo)
Cave tileset (Kopejo)
Beach tileset (Shikaternia)
Airship tileset (Shikaternia)
Ghost house tileset (Shikaternia)
Super Princess Peach ghost house BG
Willow (arcade) castle foreground
Super Castlevania IV castle backgrounds
Magical Quest Baron's Castle foreground and background)
Mountain BG (forgot game)
Shikaternia's Ice cavern FG
Daze Before Christmas Santa's house FG/BG
Jazz Jackrabbit Holidaus
Jazz Jackrabbit Nuclear Meltdown
Castlevania Rondo of Blood burning village
Wario Land 4 40 Below Fridge (both)
Wario Land 4 Hotel Horror
Actraiser Forest
Castlevania Rondo of Blood Chapel
Actraiser 2 fortress
War torn city/factory foregrounds
Metal Slug Advance Rebel Base graphics
Kopejo's Forest tileset
Mystic Lake tilesets
Castlevania Rondo of Blood ghost ship

And more

He said Part 1 would be done sometime around this year, and Part 2 in 2016. Part 3 is unknown as of now.

Yeah pretty much. I've finished a lot of levels, just need to finish the rest, add the custom power ups into this ROM and finish things like the intro and ending (for part 1).
