Will SMWC eventually come to end?

Link Thread Closed
I've been wondering. Will SMWC ever die at some point in the future?

I don't think there is a website will live more than 1000 years.
I wasn't going to tell you guys until tomorrow, but yes, SMWC is shutting down some time next week. It's been a nice rid, guys~

But really, I'm sure it will end eventually. Over time, rom hacking will become less and less active, and eventually there just won't be enough people left to justify keeping the site up. But that's years away, I'm sure.
SMWC will end when Kieran dies, and even that's negligible because p4 could just continue it.

There's also the possibility of it ending when the site just peters out but that won't happen any time soon, it's taken 4 years for the community to lose half of its active user count and at least 3 people register every day.
According to SNN, the site server is Kieran's parents' basement. So, we should be good provided their basement doesn't flood.

Yes, it will someday. All sites come to an end eventually. Most users that register become inactive or something like that. This community will end in about 10 to 40 years. I doubt that Kieran will manage to keep this site alive when he's 60 years old, or any of admins.
Let hope that this site will keep alive and never come to the end !
All good things must come to an end. This site is not an exception. Just enjoy your time here, now; don't worry about how it will end.
It will because all things are temporary. In a less broader scope, I can see SMW ROM hacking eventually dying off because users can't think of anything else that hasn't been done to death which would motivate them a lot less, and as more and more hacks are made, ideas are much, much more difficult. Actually I'm not sure if it would happen specifically because of the scenario I described.
Even reading about how Nintendo knows about us already and if they were gonna shut the site down, they would have already, I still kinda have a hint of concern. This is one reason I don't want to completely rely on ROM hacks to stay afloat on YT.

Even if SMWC's ownership was handed off as the then-current owner no longer wanted to host it, yes, SMWC would die because the sun would engulf the planet some odd billion of years down the line.

Less silly answer: The site activity is still decently strong but interest in the main focus has declined over the years. A far larger percentage of users actually hacked SMW back then. Including more modern or "hackable but less hacked" games is more likely to draw dedicated faces as people grow tired of SMW or the new generations don't have interest in such an outdated platform, but in order to secure that, we need to give hackers of newer games reasons to choose our website, such as providing a superior hosting format for their hard work, and knowledgable people to host events themed around such games to encourage more people to try them. Without that, I think our community will increasingly become non-hackers, and I think that with the exception of those stuck in their roots who would stick around for their friends, serious hackers we have left would flock to RHDN or Zophar.

I can't think of the shake-up SMW needs to pull people back in and I probably have more of a dream than an idea. That level editor p4plus2 was working on when he first signed up seemed like a step in the right direction but I dunno what happened to that. D: I do think modifying the disassembly and recompiling it would give a lot more flexibility and if such a level editor were to work with that as well as other tools, it'd be awesome... not to mention, we'd actually be able to have "open source" hacks so people can directly build off of other ideas if an author chose to release that with less issues of conflicts between resources.

I don't think nowadays that hackers think of the "little people" who are trying to get into it but don't have the know-how to make what they need. People used to be very friendly on requests, despite the strong increase in quality of resources from then to now, and it grew more every-man-for-himself while some people still do things for others. It's just not how it used to be.

If iit does, I certainly hope it isn't soon, 'cause I just got here a little under two months ago! #ab{@_@}

Jokes aside, since this is a bit of a heavy topic, I think so long as Kieran Menor continues to host and maintain the site, I personally see no reason for it to go down. And even if difficulties arise with Kieran's maintenance and ownership of the site, the responsibility could likely be handed off to another trusted, willing staff member.

I DEFINITELY hope so, because all my work here would be a waste.

The show must go on!!
Give thanks to RPG hacker for working on Asar.
I think K3fka should host the site. He does such a good job moderating the trash can that all the bad threads have been taken right out! I trust this person more than even our President and I'm really surprised Kieran Menor hasn't given him ownership yet.

Indeed, it would be great to see the show go on! For the sake of your work, and everyone else's.

The only way SMWCentral will shut down is if there is a riot about this turning into A Link to the Past hacking.
There is no knowledge that is not power.
I know you love Zelda and all, and Imma let you finish, but do you need to bump two dead threads to namedrop it? D:
