The 8th Annual VLDC: Hack release thread! [ZSNES USERS READ THE FIRST POST]

Oh man, the hack has been really fun so far! There are some really clever levels and fun levels. There's this one that makes me quite sad though, because it had such a cool concept and music to go with it, but then the level is ruined by its excessive length. I'm talking about Matrix Mines, by the way. I honestly don't want to play through the whole thing again just to get the secret exit, at least not for now, but hey, congrats to the guy for making such unique level!
I've done about 40~ exits so far. It's pretty enjoyable for the most part, though some levels are pretty mediocre. My biggest complaint is similar to Masterlinks - some of the levels overstay their welcome by quite a margin.
I kind of feel that way about ferrety's level - the time limit is very strict is you plan on doing it in one go and the level felt like it was repeating the same obstacles over and over again with little difference.

I finished Waterflow Temple with 800 secs and got a messed up score counter, might need a fix for that

Yup, there's a patch for that.

The alternative solution would be to just not have a timer high enough that it's possible to get 800 seconds after finishing it.

X world was very nice. I didn't expect it to be vanilla, but oh well. It was still awesome.
Also, Brutal Mario inspiration for the map?

Glad you liked it! <3 I made the graphics and overall design for the map, someone else (forgot who) made the ASM effects. And no, it wasn't inspired by Brutal Mario. Rather, it was inspired by my idea for the Best submap in the overworld contest!

How you dare to ever forget me?! D:

SNN gave me the base OW with the level graphics inserted, and he asked me to make something fancy. And abusing SA-1 and HDMA I got a mode that has 8 dynamic layers making something pretty abstract. I didn't base off anything (aside from Ninomo's GFX/OW), I just started coding, thinking on something cool and I ended with that. By the way, it's around 1482 lines of codes and tables.

Without outright spoiling it, the secret exit is very, very early in the level.
Anyone find my level in there?
Gotta play this soon. I hope there's no super secret thing like last year's hall of fame where I gotta beat the hack real quick to get a low placement or somethin
Having fun with this hack so far, played the Worst World to go ahead and get that over with. To be truthful, I really wish the people that placed in this world knew a thing or two about actual level design, or at least bad level design; because that world is nothing but tediousness to play. (That being said, some of the levels are alright, like Black Ice for example)
Got stuck with Matrix Mines. Any hints on finding secret exit here? I am giessing, the keyhole in normal goal area is a red herring...

~I'm sorry. I'm learning about how to make a good level, but in my cynical mind, I thought making hard levels would do it.

I'm slowly learning how to make a level that's not broken... As I have bad luck with that. xD

If it was a Kaizo or pit contest, sure, but unless you're PangaeaPanga, fun factor is more important than high difficulty.

Is this intentional? Not my picture, by the way. I still haven't played it, nor I know what level is it exactly.
Confirm Level Maker: any level that doesn't require emulation tools to be played through is good to me really.

Masterlink: yes, and that's just the point of the level in question.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
So, I decided to try playing through the entirety of MariYOLO Adventure in the Worst World just for fun (with tool-assistance, of course), and I encountered a problem here, which makes proceeding any further impossible. And, according to Confirm Level Viewer, the saw isn't actually supposed to reverse direction right there, so we're wondering if it's the side-effect of a patch that was applied to the VLDC 8 hack or something.
The hack is great so far, however, like others have said, many of the levels are too long. Not to mention lots of the secret exits are pretty hard to find, like Crystal Reef Garden's, for example. Gave up on finding it for now. I hope the rest of the hack turns out as awesome as it's mostly been so far.

Yeah. Black Ice was pretty good, at least as far as levels in the worst world go.

With how much some of these levels sprite spam and such, you'd expect it to have placed a bit higher. But I can see why it placed as low as it did, in the end.
I've become very grumpy these last few years, and have been biting my tongue here in SMWC's forums quite a bit. I just want to let you all know that if ever I come off as harsh, I still care about you all. You guys are great.

Black ice is a bit broken for me on my emulator. The level just purely cuts off.
