3+World (Cancelled) - Final Build Download + Story Reveal

Standard

Hello!

It's been a long time since I've been able to even look at Lunar Magic ever since my life has gotten so busy. The friend I had working on this with me lives in another state nowadays. Adult life is real, so I am officially cancelling this long forgotten project. Yeah, I'm one of those hackers now. haha In case anyone is interested, I am going to put up the latest build for download, and explain what my idea was in concept and story! The hack is open and anyone may use the resources. If anybody were to continue it, I'd gleefully let them do so.

Download the Final Build Here
Be sure to check every level! There's some fun design and themes, as well as some weird experiments. The rom also works on a real SNES, which I play every so often. Please play it, use the resources, and let me know what you think. I'm still curious after all this time, and I'd love to hear what you guys think of my old project.

The games core concept and inspiration is mentioned in the original post, so I'll just explain my idea for the story. Or, at least what I remember of it.

Story
At the beginning you were to replay the ghost ship level from Super Mario World (with updated graphics). Once you reach the Goal Point Sphere, rather than ending the level, there would be visions of the new villain in this hack, an Obsidian Castle, and Mario would awake in his bed from the nightmare.

Mario has been having the same nightmare for weeks now, and you find out Mario still has the sphere from that ghost ship. He wishes to find the Obsidian Castle with the Orb to get more answers.

Mario finds the Obsidian Castle. There he learns that there are more of these orbs, and they can be found on other crashed Doomships not far from Dinosaur Land. Turns out Bowser and the Koopalings were collecting the orbs, and the boos crashed these ships to protect the orbs. Bowser was going to use them to bring back the "King of Ghosts" (I forgot the name I gave him). Mario must find and return these orbs to the Obsidian Castle to be sealed away.

The "King of Ghosts" Concept

Each crashed Doomship was to be sort of the "castles" of the hack. One encased in ice maybe, another suspended in the air in pieces by Boo magic or something. There would be a fight with this "King of Ghosts" in the undeworld once all of the Orbs were collected. I forget why, but it my head it sounded cool. I suppose this is all I can recollect!

Please enjoy! I apologize to anyone who looked forward to playing a finished product.

Some of you may remember this hack I posted back in 2012. Well... I decided to pick it up again. It's a hack intended to combine SMW with SMB3. The goal is to take the best parts from both games, and create a new unique one with it's own story without any awkward clashing of graphics or gameplay.

I want to focus on great atmosphere, and fun level design/mechanics. Levels shouldn't be linear, and should relate to other levels in that world. I want everything to have purpose. Big coins collected will be counted between levels and worlds for worthwhile secrets, and certain areas will become easier or accessible with certain powerups and items. The item reserve will only collect items from SMB3 treasure boxes, and not from extras you pick up in the level. This will ensure that if you need a springboard in a level or something, you won't accidentally replace it with a redundant mushroom.

I don't have the story down 100% yet, but, I want it to be as Majora's Mask is to Ocarina of Time. Familiar, but unsettling and a tad dark. For now I'll just say, the Goal Point Sphere and Sunken Ghost Ship from SMW are big plot points.

I'll get more on that later. Here are some screenshots to whet your appetite. Comments and constructive criticism are appreciated and very much encouraged!

Hey, the screens look very nice, especially fifth and the last screenshot. I also like how you're taking on the whole Majora's Mask approach, and how some elements from SMW actually foreshadows this hack.

(rip my other userbars momentarily)

Wow, everything looks incredible. Screenshot number one looks great (and I may have a mind to steal that layer 3 idea), and the last picture is steallar as well. Good ideas with the golden trimmed windows, the royal looking carpet, and those cute little stand-up trees.

Great work, will follow.
I absolutely love how clean this looks.
I really like the look of this. You're doing a good job so far of blending SMB3 and SMW. It looks fun to play. I look forward to doing so.
I really like it. Everything looks well done and clean.

Also the last screenshot is just wow - great work with that castle tileset.
Thanks for the kind words guys! It's relieving to hear my idea of mashing these 2 games together seems to be going smooth in the eyes of others.

I wish I had the story more fleshed out. I feel like the idea I have with those SMW elements really makes for a natural yet unexpected plotline for a sequel. With even a new villain! None of that Bowser-steals-Peach BS.

Thanks! This tileset started along great, but I have hit a bit of a wall with what else to add. The Obsidian Fortress is to be unique in the game, and I want it to have it's own defined features. Ideas for this are welcome as well.

I enjoyed Super Mario World Beta so I'm looking forward to this hack. I like that kind of level design.

The graphics and decorations are great with the expection of the second (and third) screen. Those decorative hills look rather ugly and the plastic blocks in the background kinda clash with the blocks in the foreground.
Wow, this looks awesome! :D
Nice to see a thread for this! The levels seem very well-made, and pretty much everything looks beautiful as well. Really feels like a SMW sequel (which somewhat fits what you're trying to do).

I'm also really interested in seeing the actual plot, as it does sound like an fantastic idea.

Overall, great job!
...wow! This is one the best looking hacks around here, if you ask me. Except for this screenshot. I'm not a fan of the bright bushes, but overall, this is amazing. I hope to see more progress soon.
Also, can you please upload your images to imgur or something and not MediaFire? It's blocked here, and having to use proxy programs to see it isn't very fun.

I could see why you guys would say those things. I'll look into tweaking the graphics to get a better look from them. Thanks for the kind words and feedback!

Oh, really? Yeah, I'll get a new host for the shots soon. Mediafire is a bit of a bitch to use anyway, not sure why I used it this time. Am I able to host them on smwcentral? That would seem simplest.

Thanks Eternity. I'm thinking maybe I should get my story together and do some kind of story reveal. Leave any twists kind of in the dark and get the main idea out there. I can't say I'm much of a story writer, but maybe I could reveal it in a unique way. All of the ideas and elements are there, I just need to glue it together in a sensible manner.

Looks like a really nice sequel or mix of SMB3 and SMW. You did a really nice job there. I like the aesthetics and some stuff look creative, as made out of original graphics. Really nice tilesets (especially the castle one), keep up the good work!

(this hack looks pretty fluid and I can't really see much that stands out of place btw)

Hah! Of course. Thanks MercuryPenny!

Here's a few screens just to show a small amount of progression. Not much you haven't seen before. Most of what I've shown is just of the first world. I'm slugging along, but now that my life is leveling out a bit, I may be more consistent. Maybe even a video preview? Anyway:

State 0 Saved! (Edit: apparently already posted this bit! Oh well!)

Cave, 'cept cold! Ice blocks!?

This one is experimental. I used HDMA to sub as an ocean, so I could focus layer 2 and 3 to be ice bergs. Does it look good, or can I do better?

And that's it for you strangely snow themed update. Keep cool this summer. Yeah.

These screenshots are very good, but I think it's great! Has this hack got custom music?

That's quite creative! It looks great, but maybe the gradient could be smoother.

I love the atmosphere here. It can be quite difficult to pull off something like this with vanilla graphics, but it looks perfect to me. A video of that layer 2/3 in action would be great.

Looking good; however I'm not sure how I feel about the triangles in that dirt. It just doesn't look right to me. Hard to fault the palettes though, and the gradient is also really nice.
Awesome work with the aesthetics here! I actually really like the dirt, it does work pretty well with the whole SMB3+W thing you're going for. The "HDMA ocean" looks surprisingly good, actually - I would love to see a video of that background as well.
These screenshots tickle my pickle in too many good ways. Really looking forward to this.

Just one small thing is kind of bothering me.

I think there's too much going on in the background here. Particularly the wavy ocean hills seem out of place.
