In general, your entry was just uninteresting. It wasn't as terrible as #1, #11 or #12 but it also wasn't good as, say, all the others. I remember that on IRC you were talking in a purist-like manner about how your entry didn't win because "damn them kids today and their fancy eggsgraphics and ay-ass-ems, I tell ya!"

While it's true that the best entries did use exgfx and/or asm to spice things up, that doesn't mean you couldn't have done the same with smw's resources. Again, your entry was uninteresting: there was the controversial wall of doom, boring color choices and an all-around boring geography (blanket term for decorations, landmass shapes, placement, etc.). I also could hardly tell what map's supposed to represent the worst world and it took me a bit to get which one's supposed to be the best one. Even falconpunch did a better job with his map (#6); notice how the main map, despite using vanilla resources, manages to actually look good: the terrain is varied, there are waterfalls, rivers, hills and trees of varying sizes, interesting colors,
a water swastika
... it's just nice. Entry #5 also looks really nice while also using only vanilla tiles (allthough the all the TECHNICOLOR xD bothers me a bit).

What really happened is that you made a boring map, other entrants made far more interesting ones. You can't really blame DrTapeworm or Lui for whatever they used; I mean, if they can use whatever they want, why should they restrain/handicap themselves? It's a competition, the point is to go all-out and do the best you can. You can't seriously enter a contest like this that's been happening for years with (judging by your post) begginer skills and expect to win or to be one of the best. And please stop talking about the "recognition it deserves" like your map was something tremendously great... I'm sorry, but it really wasn't; in fact, I refused to tell you what I didn't like about it in detail because I didn't want to make you feel bad (so I just pointed out the most glaring issue), but you asked for it so here it is.

And I guess that's it.

It wasn't nitpicky, actually, it was valid criticism. I said the overworld was good, but that the wall detracted from it and I explained why it did so. The only other thing I could've done was ignore the issue and give a vague, "it's good, but it's not 1st place good".
Your overworld is good, but it is not outstanding in any way when compared to some of the other entries in this contest. Complaining about the massive wall dividing your main map is not nitpicking, but I don't consider it a make-or-break issue either. As Magiluigi has already said, your maps just felt kind of boring when compared to the better entries. All of your submaps are OK, but there's no discernible best and worst worlds, which probably impacted our overall opinion of your entry.

That's how this contest was played. Lui37 and Dr. Tapeworm did not excessively use custom graphics or ASM and neither did you. Even if two entries were of comparable quality (appealing aesthetics, well-planned layouts, etc.), the one that has "something extra" such as a bit more decoration will probably win.

Pretty much at that moment. You're compalining about people being overly judgmental when the whole point was to judge the OW's and determine the best. People even found faults with the top two maps because we were trying to determine the best. I don't really know how we can single out a single map to be better than the others without finding the faults with the others. So of course we're gonna criticize even the littlest issues with them. You even say yourself that the massive divider in your main map was an issue. You don't think we'll call it out when we go through these OWs?

I just don't really know what you were expecting to get back from us when you submitted the OW to get judged....

Well, at some point I expected that I would feel like this myself, as I too was extremely proud of my own creation (it's the best map I've ever put together, too), but I decided to consider that there are people over here that may be far more skilled than me. For contests like this, just don't place your specs too high, because that'll only bring you a lot down when you find that you didn't win, or that you didn't get as much recognition as you expected to. Design with heart, but make sure to feel fulfilled with your participation on its own.

(Also, I thought this had been posted and didn't realise the ninja warning. This was meant to go under ZMann's latest post, welp)
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
The eight entry was basically my first overworld ever and I entered the contest mainly to test my overworld making skills. Well, I'm kinda disappointed that it got only one vote but now I see it had some room of improvement. Too bad I spent too much time making the main map; the submaps (with the exception of the fire one) were last-minute. Same with some palette changes.

Also, I have submitted the graphics here, if anyone is interested.
Yeah, I'm not very happy with the way my battlefield turned out, but it is also the first complete battlefield I have ever designed. Oh well. At least now, I've learned how to use more features of the Battlefield editor. A bit more practice with that and custom textures will (as well as designing more mission objectives) will prepare me for the 9th annual Vanilla Mission Objective Design War.


I really want to see this hack in SMW Hacks section.
