HDMA is nice and all, but I feel that sub par submaps are still sub par. The only map that benefits from the effect is the ice/sky map, but there's still something really off about the sky portion of that map to me. But then, if the gaming industry as a whole has taught me anything, it's that despite what they might say, a large cross section of people are easily suckered in by bells and whistles. If the HDMA was an added bonus to what was already a fantastic set of maps, that'd be a different matter.
Before I forget, I also have a more collaborative suggestion. Instead of voting for one best overall entry, we could vote Yes or No on each entry individually, and then every entry which passes a certain percentage of Yes votes would be used. So, we'd have one version of the hack for each entry that was voted in, kind of like a special issue of a magazine that has multiple front covers.

Finally, could I ask for more clarification on why people feel #17 is the best overall? I don't think it's a bad map at all, but I see the following issues:

It's just good. The good things about the map outshines its flaws. It's clean, and well thought out. Every thing feels like it's deliberately there - nothing is without purpose. I do think the middle green area is a little too bland, but other than that, it's very well done.

Main Map: #15'
In terms of composition, no other map comes close. Many maps are a cluster of cramped islands or blatant quadrants, but #15 has large landmasses that flow into each other and make good use of all the space the main map provides. They also have unique general shapes and are arranged at different angles, whereas #17's grassland and forest worlds look quite similar, and everything is viewed head-on.

I feel completely different. Entry 15's bizarre landmasses feel sketch-like. There's no clear composition. It could be visually appealing with the low-grasslands going to the top right mountains, but the castle world is far too much of a sore thumb. It's like Hawaii and Alaska on the bottom right of USA maps, except cramped in. Added with how homogeneous it looks, it's just looks uninteresting and unintentional. That's my problem with a lot of the maps. Also the bottom left of the map is really ugly, looking at it as a photographer. It's one of those details that becomes distracting to the picture, so you crop it out.

In any case in terms of "most interesting" composition, for me it has to go to Entry 2. The way the landmasses frame the middle bay makes the map feel like intentional and thought out (even more so than 17's), though despite that, I feel that it looks too homogeneous (even more than 15) to be better than 17's.

Despite what is said in the rules, why in the world can't I discuss the idea of merging maps (when other people already started discussing it) in a discussion thread were everyone is talking about which maps they like best. I like 17, 3, and 7, and is throwing in my thoughts on them, which happens to simply include the idea of merging. The winner may have the last say, but it's ridiculous to call me out specifically for discussing it before the winner is picked when he have no winner yet. I'll knock it off, but geez. You make it sound like I'm irrational about this.
You kinda took apart every little piece of what others were stating against your point or to keep the winner's work intact, which created a tone of stubbornness and forcefulness, and I think you should look back on your presentation and think about where you may have come across also as vague or overaggressive. The line between arguing and debating is sometimes hard to judge. I personally believe that line was tread upon, and that's what his warning was more about than musing over the idea of merging submaps. I'm sure if there was no reason to be concerned, he probably would've left it as "the rules won't be changed halfway through the voting period."

If the winner wins then I see no reason why they can't choose to include others' submaps over their own if they feel it'd be better or have their entry used in whole, but ultimately it should be their decision.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
twenty minutes left for voting and there's a tie for first...

and second...

and third...

and fourth...

and fifth...

and sixth.

(oh, and i guess seventh too, but that's the things nobody voted for)
Sorry, not planning on reading this many pages. Is there drama going on here or something?

On topic however, I voted for 17. 3 comes rather close, but the worst and best submaps aren't too well done in my opinion.

not really. just the standard "combine maps!" nonsense

69 votes for entry 3 and 69 for entry 17.

69CEPTION!!!

EDIT: I just realized that they both went up to 70 votes but there still in an epic tie though.

EDIT2: Now entry 3 is winning.

I've estabilished my vote to 3 thanks to this last minute pressure or something. And honestly, even though I couldn't care less myself (emphasis on "myself") if people took only one or two submaps of mine and put it in the middle of someone's else work... I'm perfectly fine with the entirety of 3 being used. As I mentioned earlier, while the levels are tightly arranged in the main map, the shapes and the design are the best of the winning chunk. I also like the best world and how it's tied to the worst world and I don't think it warrants any sort of replacement with any other.

If it wins, that is, because we're in such a tight situation right now... I mean, whoa.
EDIT: this is obviously my opinion, and what I believe that should be done is what the majority agrees with, as long as the map authors are perfectly fine with that as well.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
I wouldn't even treat the poll as 100% accurate right now, since there are people who voted accidentally and would have to change their vote through PM.

Honestly, at this rate I really wonder if we should just use both and have two versions / maps from which players can choose.

The voting is officially over, and .. it's a tie. Well, shit.

I'm going to leave you guys with a couple of options. Whichever you prefer is the route we'll take.

a) Collaborate with #3 and #17 and have them both be the winners. The final map would be a mixture of the best components in both #3 and #17.
b) Hold a very short anonymous revote using just #3 and #17.

Please decide on which route you'd like to take. Majority rules by tomorrow night.

Also: #3 was made by Dr. Tapeworm. #17 was made by Lui37.
I rather take option a), I rather see the best of both, because both are really good, my only complaints are that 17's worst world is just boring. & there should be an easy way out of both best & worst worlds. Thank you.
Option A would be better, I think.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
i vote option c:
i finish my entry

Entry#17: Main Map and Sky/Ice Submap.

Entry#3: Fire, Cave, Best and Worst.
I'm too lazy to edit this.

Your layout has been removed.
I honestly don't feel like voting anymore so I'll go with A.
Layout by Mirann <3

I'm probably retired tbh
I like the third choice. I keep the disk, and throw you BOTH off!

Translation: (c) Use both in their entirety, creating two versions of the hack.

I mean, none of the maps in question are outright bad, so I'm indifferent about mixing and matching if it's just between those two entries. I also feel like such a close vote doesn't justify only using one entry, so I'm not sure I'd be satisfied with another vote either.

Regardless, I'm expecting (a) to be the popular choice here, so my question is how the mixture will be decided, and whether the authors have given their consent.

I think they're both aware of this option and neither of them have come forward, but should they not want it, I will find an alternate solution (perhaps your option). For the mixing and matching portion, I would probably ask both of them to discuss it amongst themselves and come up with the best combination of maps they can agree on. At that point, I'd open it up to the userbase and if the majority agree on it, we would go with what they came up with as our final map.

This is a bit of an unusual case (I didn't expect a tie with such a high amount of votes), so I'm kind of just winging my ideas at this point. If you or anyone else can think of a better way to handle the mixing, I'm all ears - otherwise, I'm going to go with what I said in my first paragraph.

Well, as I said on IRC: I think we should completely leave this decision up to our two winners. Let THEM discuss this and decide what to do, then we do that. They ARE the winners, after all- why should we further decide what THEY have to do?

Hence why I'm not voting for anything until they make their decision, at which point I'll back them on whatever it is.
