Notable ROM Hacks. (Updated: 12/07/2014)

Urgh.... I hate NSMB3 more than anything. The hack is a disappointment. I'll give you reasons if I can. Really.

I would agree here... oh right, you're hamza62240, I'm not sure if I should agree with you. Well, let me put reasons I think that apply here - insane difficulty, bad level design, memorization puzzles, secrets that are simply impossible to find without guide, invisible coin blocks spam, repetitive rooms, stupidly pointless mazes, bad difficulty curve, and the traps that belong to I Wanna Be The Guy.

I'm not sure even if I should link to examples, because this is just crazy. I'm just going to link to the original trailer (at 3:30, before that, it just shows barely modified level remakes). Anything that isn't directly copied from Nintendo is just crazy in New Super Mario Bros. 3. It's trailer for first version, but other than basic graphical enhancements, it barely changed in terms of level design.

Also, in case someone is interested, I also want to put a map of 5-B as evidence of stupidly pointless mazes (uploaded by author). Yes, the entire level is just stupidly pointless. And yep, there are two fake blocks, needed to access the secret exit. Or this maze that will exist in the next update of the hack. This is not a good hack. I'm still waiting for good NSMB ROM hack, but this is not even acceptable in my opinion.

Then again, NSMB3 is notable. It's very popular, somehow.

Um...? Not sure if you should agree with me?

Also, those are the very same reasons. #ab{:D}

I seriously tried NSMB3 and I couldn't get past 1-2! -.-

Well, even when his game has a bad design, it's the best and only completed bugfree NSMB hack :)
The 5-B was changed completly after a lot of complaints (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7b7vs0J508)
He said that he made this huge maze because he got out of ideas to those times. (understandable)

As you said, his hack is very popular.
The reasons are probably the immense difficulty which can't be found on any mario game from Nintendo (official games)
and that he has modified/advanced SMB3 courses (the most loved Mario game)

His hack was even announced from the biggest videogaming internet portals

The last part of your comment makes absolutely zero sense, hamza... ("I'll give you reasons if I can. Really.")

Have you considered including Rockman 4 Minus Infinity? It definitely seems like a hack that belongs on this list, judging from videos of it (such as this one). I'm not quite sure if it's actually complete yet, though-- all the levels exist, but some features still seem to be missing.

I have to say, with all the Rockman (Mega Man) hacks out there, not this one? I'm slightly ashamed, it was one of the more unique hacks of Mega Man and arguably the best ever made. I suggest it should be one of Notable ROM Hacks.

I third Rockman 4: Minus Infinity (it is 100% finished). Definitely the best Megaman hack ever done and a strong contender for the best Megaman game period, official or otherwise.
Here's a surprising turn of events: A new version of Pokemon Brown!
3Mix (SMB3 hack) came out under a month ago. I haven't tried it yet, but people are claiming it's revolutionary in terms of the ASM and whatnot. Might be worth checking out.
If someone liked SM64DS , why don't you play a hack of it called Another Super Mario 3D by skawo, which it was released a month ago.
I did a little housekeeping update to avoid the thread ending up like the old one.

Being inactive also got me thinking about the future of this thread and I'll want to state this right now to any staff now and in the future:

If my name is inactive and you see that the thread hasn't been updated in over a year, make sure you check the links and update from the suggestions if necessary.

That said I'm planning on adding some more hacks to the list but I've been out of the loop in terms of the ROM hacking scene, does anyone have any more recent ROM's I should add to the list?
Vinnyboiler your sonic hacks you have listed are both waaaaaaaaaaay outdated.

Megamix: http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_Megamix

S factor: http://info.sonicretro.org/The_S_Factor:_Sonia_and_Silver

These are the links that will be kept updated.

I'd like to reiterate my suggestion of adding Super Metroid - Kaizo Edition to the list of notable romhacks.

I played this hack some years ago and it contains surprisingly good level design (not just spike hell) and decent difficulty.
It's literally not playable normally though, but TASers and very advanced (and patient) players might get into this.

It really isn't ''just another kaizo hack''. #tb{:D}
first of all i like your romhack thread a lot! one of the cleanest collections of quality gamehacks i have ever seen.

still you are missing out on so many great romhacks out there its a shame... i add some highly recommended games that have to be included in your list! #tb{:DD}

NES:

Rockman 4 Minus Infinity

Description:
New music, gameplay mechanics, branching pathways, enemies from earlier and later games, hidden bosses and reasonable difficulty for beginners which is FUN. Best Megaman romhack ever.

Super Mario Bros. Special X1 for NES

Description:
Smb based game licensed by nintendo and created by hudson soft for the japanese PC8801/Sharp X1. original high quality level design, slightly higher difficulty than smb and altered pallette. highly recommended.

Zelda - The Legend of Link

Description:
Entire new game built onto the zelda engine. included capcom sound engine, new graphics, asm programming, enemies, weapons, items and bosses. most impressive zelda hack ever.

SNES:

Super Mario World - The Second Reality Project (Reloaded)

Description:
New graphics, music, levels and balanced gameplay. considered to be one of the best smw hacks for over 10 years. highly recommended.

GBA:

Pokémon FireRed Throwback

Description:
Remake of the original red/blue version. 8-bit music selectable, original character outfits, new features, fixes and running indoors. definitive version of the original adventure.

Genesis:

Metal Sonic Hyperdrive

Description:
New music and zones, new playable characters like kirby and somari, sonic cd style gameplay and different play modes.

I don't think that's needed. The link may be outside of SMWC but the hack is on this site anyway, and I don't think we need to show SMW hacks in this thread.
Legacy custom music
A site with a non-useless dislike button
SMW hacking channel

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll add them to the list. Like Sokobansolver said I probably wont any SMW hacks to this list though.

Edit: Added, if someone can get me some updated Sonic Megamix and The S Factor: Sonia and Silver screenshots I would be grateful.
I believe that Super Mario 3Mix should be added to this list, because it does something no other SMB3 hack has ever done:

You can ride YOSHI in the game!

The game in general follows a distinct pattern: each level is based on a previously-released Mario game, and is NOT restricted to the ones released on NES.

Games featured include Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japanese), Super Mario Bros. 2 (American), Super Mario World, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy.

Worlds 3 and 5 are basic themed worlds, with world 3 being based on a haunted-house/cemetery theme, and world 5...well, let's just say I haven't gotten that far yet (plus, the game WON'T LET ME! World 3 is already harder than SMB3's world 8! Sheesh...)

Apart from occasional framerate issues, though, this game is absolutely SICK! What other SMB3 hack has YOSHI in it?!

Already on the list. #ab{^_^} (Last SMB3 hack before the LoZ section).
Sorry about that. My bad. #fim{:X}

Super Mario Bros. 3Mix is easily the most beautifully designed NES game hack I have EVER seen. Period.

The only problem is, it's somewhat difficult to come up with anything besides simple RAM-write codes for it, because none of the ROM-write Game Genie codes (or their decrypted equivalents) work, so I have no basis to work from.

Thus, the address for multi-jumps can't be pinpointed, due to a sheer lack of working ROM write codes to base my subsequent conversions on.

I've even tried to use an exact-value search to find the value which changes depending on whether one has jumped or not. Result: EPIC FAIL.

Please note that I'm using a rather unorthodox method to hack this game: I'm using a cheat device meant for PSP games on a modded SNES game being played via emulator on my PSP. Kind of a roundabout way to hack cheats for older consoles, eh?

Let me tell you: it WORKS...usually.

I'm surprised it hasn't been included yet, but if Matrizzle is okay with it, can we add Donkey Kong Country 2: Brigand Barrage to the list? The first installment is listed, too, afterall.

Edit: Also, I noticed a few screenshots being broken at the front page of this thread.

Edit 2: Nevermind... just my WLAN messing around with me. #thp{>_<2}

There is no knowledge that is not power.
This thread seems to be sleeping. But I think it is my duty to wake it up and announce that it's now possible to play the original Super Mario Bros. in Co-Op mode! What a milestone, I never thought I'd see the day.
