RednGreen's ports and compositions (C3 2014)

Hi! Here are most of the compositions/ports I made during these two years. Little description of every track:

INEDITED
Beyond the skies (ff6) - What if there was an inedited airship theme? I don't know if it'd really sound like this, but it's what I tried to achieve! Uses samples from FF6 and Chrono Trigger.
Cursed Cathedral (ct) - This one is inspired by RPG dungeons. Replicating Mitsuda's style isn't too easy, but his chord progressions are quite recognizable (you'll probably find some similarities with a certain CT track).
Funky Forest - "You inexplicably find yourself in a lost forest. But it's a funky forest - whatever that means. Enemies start chasing you, you must escape...this is what you could possibly hear in your mind!"
Jazz Thingy - Ultra-short loop I originally made for Il Maniero Spettrale, but it went unused. Could work for little intermezzi.

IDOL 5
Cold - "You're lost in a frozen dungeon, trying to find a way out. Will you make it or freeze to death?" - This was one of the first rounds; I had to use uneven instruments only.
Tense Atmosphere - Hidden boss theme from Star Ocean. Could I ever take part in a C3 without bringing something by Sakuraba? Replicating the crackly synth was pretty fun.
Credits - Happy little tune which could fit staff rolls; I tried giving it that "finally the adventure is over, yet you feel sort of nostalgic!" vibe.

IL MANIERO SPETTRALE
Theme - Spo0oky tune which develops in something more emotional/tragic. I fell in love with Halloween-esque chord progressions.
Mansion - This one's definitely less serious than the previous one. Partially inspired by Banjo & Kazooie, partially by Nobuo Uematsu. I tried to include some silly sounds, like the @13 slides and Boo's laugh.
noisnaM - .hgual s'ooB dna sedils 31@ eht ekil ,sdnuos yllis emos edulcni ot deirt I .ustameU ouboN yb deripsni yllaitrap ,eioozaK & ojnaB yb deripsni yllaitraP .eno suoiverp eht naht suoires ssel yletinifed s'eno sihT
Danger - This one plays when you enter the infernal elevator and have to avoid all the spikes. I tried giving the song an eerie feel using @0 slides at the beginning.
Phantom Forest - ambiental track I made for the Phantom Forest. I had fun choosing the sound effects, can you guess where the bird

SMWCP1.5
Grasslands - this was supposed to be the default grassland theme, but unfortunately the project was shut down. Could also fit beach levels!

MISC PORTS
Royal Palace - This one's from Golden Sun. I love when Sakuraba does baroque stuff.
Cave Story - Running Hell - I managed to get Cave Story's samples, but it was pretty hard using them in SMW - some of them were too low and I had to manually raise the pitch in OpenMPT (e.g.: #0 at 0:58 :P)
Animal Crossing - K.K. Bossa - I love K.K. Slider songs. This one in particular is very soothing and uses some awesome chords.
The Starry Cradle - Soothing little tune which could fit space/night overworlds.
Equinox - Tori - Could I ever take part in a C3 without bringing something by Tim Follin? This one took quite a lot of time - since it has no actual rhythm, identifying when to play certain notes was pretty hard (e.g.: the water drops).
Radical Dreamers - Frozen Flame (uses custom sample group) - I fell in love with this tune when I first heard it while poking around random SPC sets. It's so mysterious :D

FOR PORTERS!
Pulse Width Modulation - This audio technique consists in having two sawtooth waveforms - the first one as it is, while the second one reversed and slightly increased in pitch. Normally, two reversed saw waveform nullify each other, but since the second one's pitch is slightly increased, they just create this cool effect. PWM was used in C64 music, but some SNES audio engines (Squaresoft, but also AddmusicM) also managed to replicate the effect via some mysterious shenanigans.

I hope you enjoy my stuff. Have a great C3!
oh my
Yes, I will enjoy all of these like the little greedy hoarder I am, and no one can stop me. No one...

That cursed Cathedral post might as well been in a CT/SoM game cause you matched the style well enough. Also I can't describe my full feelings towards that Running Hell port but thank you for making it and I hope other porters could use these samples to port more accurate versions of cave story songs in the future.

lolyoshi get out, I wanted first reply you butt.
I wonder what a HFD opcode would do in ASM...
YES! I was waiting for this thread to pop up. This stuff is godly, and I'm glad you decided to release the grassland theme, since I really wanted to use it before retiring from hacking :D

Also, I noticed you defined the tempo many times in #5 for the Star Ocean port. Was that done to prevent slowdown?

Edit: Oh, and

My (shitty) headphones can't thank you enough.
These all sound really great, as expected from you. I especially like all of the Idol songs as well as Funky Forest and the Il Maniero Spettrale theme (my personal favorite though is "cold"--it reminds me a ton of Treasure Hunter G's soundtrack, one of my favorites of all time, especially with that bass).

Your composition skills are some of the best I've heard, and I would even go as far as to say you compare to people like Uematsu, Mitsuda and even Sakuraba.

Excellent work once again.
soundcloud / bandcamp / twitter / buy/stream my EP / buy my touhou music / buy my NEW album!!!
And I thought it was over with the good music for this C3. Oh, how wrong I was.
All of your songs are marvelous. Funky Forest is my personal favourite.
Hell yes, this is probably the one I was expecting the most! Each and every one of these ports and compositions, especially the compositions, are absolutely spectacular. You're still the most talented composer in the entire site in my honest opinion, so please keep up the good work. And how the hell did you even make a backwards port that's just insane.

Also the pulse technique. You're a f
reak
ing genius.

Thank you guys!

Yeah, it slowed down because of those fast @9 notes and the strong vibrato on the synth. Using a slower tempo and halving the durations would probably have worked better.
jesus fuck @ cursed cathedral. mitsuda would be proud. loving the hell out of the schala clangs at :42.

(there's really no point in showering you with any further praise at this point - you already know how fantastic you are as a musician.)
Yeah man, Cursed Cathedral is absolutely fantastic. I think you really nailed it. And cold is still pretty cool.

Thanks for sharing!
OMG, these ports are absolutely amazing.
Good job, i hope to see the better of you.
That's a lot of amazing stuff for my ears, thanks a lot RednGreen! It's impressive how your music is already good but you still keep getting even better and better every day.

Oh and just to you know, it's possible to do that modulation thing with just one sample, by using surround volume (ie. y10,1,1) on second channel. It isn't the same from editing the sample, but it gives a pretty similar result: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16203903/A/Temp/pulse.spc.

Amazing. Words can't explain how great everything you do is. I loved each music, in particular, the ones you used in the halloween contest.
Thanks also for sharing that neat modulation trick, I'll be experimenting it for future ports.
Thanks for the flattering comments, glad you like it!

Cool o_o That's actually practically identical, the example I provided just uses a softer ADSR on #1 (so the overall attack is harder). I've always thought surround only affected the sound position - the more you know :P
I listened your port with my earphone, and thay are REALLY SWEET!
I still need to improve a lot.
I somewhat expected you to release "Showdown on the Tower" as well, maybe I dreamt a bit too far, hehe.

Still, I'm definitely happy with all of your releases in this thread, all the songs are gorgeous. Cursed Cathedral is
orgasmic
and even though I'm not a fan of using fully sampled songs, this one goes to my "exceptions" list, because this is so damn well done and I'd love to use it on an extra level of my hack I'm planning to make based on the song.
Very good! My favorite is probably "Cold", though I might use that credits theme, and I'd probably use the grassland theme if I didn't already have one.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
These are some very excellently done ports and compositions. You sir, RednGreen truly are red as an elite, and green as in nice! I wasn't expecting such very nice songs.

I really like the "Forest" song because of it's ambiance, really great for setting up intense situations. Really really nice. Great job on all of these!
