Mario Maker. What are people's thoughts?

If I had Mario Maker back in the day, it would have probably fulfilled the crave I desired to put some creativity into Mario Level design. That's why my thought's of this game is "..... really?" Becuase I went through lot's of trouble and frustration back in the day, when I knew nothing about ROM hackers, trying to become one just to fulfill that crave. And the fact that Nintendo comes out with an alternative a few years later, tells me that the frustration I went through was unnecessary.

Mario Maker won't make SMW Hacking die, simply because the two things have entirely different focuses.

First of all, Mario Maker will only let you create levels, not full games. The purpose is to create levels and share them online, then maybe have other players modify those levels and share them again. Secondly, Mario Maker has an obvious focus on simplicity over functionality. You can't do nearly as many things as you can do with Lunar Magic, but everything you CAN do (at least so far) can be done from just a single page. No hundreds of pages with functions/enemies/assets, no hundreds of tools, scripts and patches for different tasks, no overworld with its own editor and not even a seperation of sprites and blocks. The purpose here is to make Maker Maker so simple that it is accessible for everyone since the whole point of it is to get as many people as possible to create and share Mario levels.

With SMW Hacking, on the other hand, the focus lies on creating full games with as few limitis as possible, even if it means having more complicated tools and putting more effort into the developing process. So even with Mario Maker, SMW Hacking will still have its place.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
Well, I found this little gem in my youtube feed

I'm curious what people may think of this.

Well, this is now a day one purchase for me.
Can there be an sm64 setting too? :P

But yeah this actually looks interesting now...I only wish they made it look like the original SMB1 instead of that weird pixely design they have going with it. :L

Well, we'll now have a consistent style at least.

I'm sure that one of the first set of levels that are going to be made are the ones from Kaizo Mario World.#ab{:LOL:}

This is amazing. I'm sure that, especially with that Super Mario World tile set, people are going to be recreating levels from at least vanilla Super Mario World hacks like crazy. I'll probably be one of those people.

I think we can expect to see the original Second Reality Project.

Bump.

This has gone from "eh could be cool" to HOLY FUCKING SHIT YOU CAN STACK A DOZEN HAMMERBROS AND BULLET BILL CANNONS THAT FIRE BOO CIRCLES ONTO GIANT PARATHWOMPS AND WEAR SPINIES ON YOUR HEAD

Yeah, after watching the Nintendo World Championships stream I got a new appreciation for Mario Maker. You can do a whole bunch of cool shit with it, and from what it looks like there's a whole bunch of content already.

Rip in pepperoni rom hacking
Who wants to stack a million enemies anyway?

Boo circles coming out of nowhere sounds nice though.

I don't really but it's cool to know that I can.

Really tho it looks like everything will actually interact with the environment and with each other which opens up a whole lot of level design possibilities. And as dumb as it is, the enemy stacking and giant/flying options bring some new ideas to the table too. Any fears I had that this might feel limited compared to smw hacking are largely gone. I mean yeah you're not going to be getting custom graphics or anything but there's definitely a lot of things you can do in Mario Maker that don't exist in any actual Mario game, which is pretty nice.

The thing SMW hacking will never defeat is the sprite limits, at least if it stays true to the SNES. Mario Maker allows for so much more (fun) sprite spam.

Mario Maker offers more interactions between enemies and lets you have more enemies on screen, but Lunar Magic lets you use more enemy variety via custom sprites and also has custom blocks and ASM. Each have their pros and cons, but I'm sure a good set of custom blocks, sprites and patches offers more level design possibilities than stacking three giant Bowsers on a trap room.

Granted, Mario Maker can do cool stuff the SNES can't do, but I still think you can do more stuff with ROM hacks if you know how.
Yeah, has there been any confirmation that Mario Maker will let you edit the overworld or use graphics and music other than those in vanilla SMB1, SMB3, SMW, and NSMBU? Because the amount I care about being able to stack 7 winged Hammer Bros. could be measured in Planck units and it would still be an overestimate. I have to question Nintendo's priorities...

Though I wasn't planning on watching the Nintendo World Championships anyway because I'm not really even sure what they are or what they're supposed to be showing.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.

You can do more with ROM hacks and that's kind of to be expected since we're "Hacking" Super Mario World. We have things like ASM patches or just ASM knowledge which can changes SMW as we know it which we probably won't ever have the option in a legit level editor. Think people kind of forget that when comparing.

About Mario Maker, I was kind of sold on buying it a long time ago just because I like designing levels and the more I see it the more hopes I have for it. Still...I've only seen analyzes of it and not that many confirmations on what you can actually do with the level editor which is annoying by this point. Also I would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit terrified for the future of it. I have a feeling I'm going to be seeing a lot of Kaizo levels or just ridiculous levels. We still have awhile before the game comes out though so maybe more can be added who knows. It would even be cool if they do what the Little Big Planet series does and add DLC packages based on other games like how they came out with a Metal Gear Solid pack for Little Big Planet. (And others I'm sure though haven't played the game in a long time.) Not going to get my hopes up though for that idea though.

there are probably no overworlds, its confirmed you can create smb styled campaigns tho with 4 levels each world (i think???)

and those are probably it for graphics and music, those 4 are the most relevant mario games anyway

this is for the better, makes it more user friendly and easier to share your creations which is what the game is about

Given a lot of time and effort, yeah, for sure. You can do a lot more with Mario maker than you can with vanilla smw tho it seems, and that is probably a better comparison as far as the required time investment goes. Though I guess some of the crazier graphical stuff vanilla hackers do probably won't be doable in Mario maker? We haven't really seen anything break from the standard level themes yet. I can definitely picture some "LEVEL DESIGN IS ALL THAT MATTERS!!!!!!" vanilla hackers making the switch to Mario maker though if it plays just like the original game. I imagine Nintendo's editor is going to be easier to use than LM.

Why would they spend money on a game and a console (unless they already have one) when they already have an editor they know who to use and use for free? Vanilla SMW is not hard to do, even chocolate SMW is not that hard you just need to know how to use GPS and spritetool. So if they don't care about adding custom resources they won't care about making enemy pyramids that barely add anything to the design. And don't tell me "Mario Maker is legal", if they cared about legality they wouldn't even hack SMW in the first place.
If anyone looks up "How to make Mario levels" right now the first result is a youtube video showcasing lunar magic (bypassing smwcentral), second result is an instructable about mario flash (lol). Soon the first result will be Mario Maker. I'm sure smwc will survive anyway, but Lunar Magic won't be any sane person's first choice when it comes to making levels and the mechanics people will get used to in Mario Maker simply can't be done on the SNES.
