Mario & Luigi: Kola Kingdom Quest - A revamp of Super Mario Bros. 5 Reborn - Beta now available for testing!

Standard

Nice level, but the video doesn't load.
I'm now down to just two levels before World 6 is done!

PIPE CITY 6 - BOSS BASS BLUES

OH NO!

Mario does NOT want to play the part of Jonah.

I think Mario'd rather take the shell to the face than get eaten.

Gamma this looks so incredible. Every video and screenshot you post makes want to play it more and more. If you're doing any beta test before you fully release it I'll be happy to help. But just incredible work!

Never mind about that, it just needed some time to load.

The video, amazing: music, graphics, level design, nice ExAnimations, and the overworld looks great! #smw{:TUP:}
Pipe City 5: Great design there! The level looks pretty fun to play, with some nice gimmicks and simple but effective aesthetics. Some of the broken pipes bother me a bit, but it's rather minor so no problem here.

Pipe City 6: Seems pretty nice as well. Design looks fine, and the Boss Bass seems to pose a fair challenge to the player. Something other than Koopas for the enemies would be nice, but I guess it's just the start of the level so it's fine.

Overall, this hack is definitely shaping up nicely; great job!
Thanks, Aeon.

Well, it's update time again! This time, I have THREE new levels to show.

LARRY KOOPA'S CASTLE

The castle starts out in a flooded sewer tunnel full of Fishbones, Dry Bones, and Red Piranha Plants.

The second half is an auto-scrolling room that's a bit of a throwback to the fourth and seventh castles in SMB1.

CITY SECRET - UP THE TUBE!

It's a vertical level similar to some levels from SMB3 World 7.

These custom Timed Lifts are controlled with the D-Pad. You have to navigate your way around obstacles while watching the clock on those things.

With that, World 6 is completed, so it's time to move on to World 7, and there's never been a more appropriate time to work on an ice world.

WINTER PEAK 1 - WINTER WONDERLAND

For the most part, this level is pretty basic. Along with the ice physics, the Walking Ptooie Plants will be the biggest obstacles, especially if you don't have a Fire Flower.

Hey! You! Get away from my Coin!

There's gotta be a P-Switch around here somewhere...

6-5: Interesting concept. I think your Fly Guy graphics have their feet a pixel or two too far away from the Wheelies they're holding, but...
6-6: Pretty decent Layer 3 water you have there, though don't forget that you can fill in the blank pixels and use Level(Init)ASM to make it transparent. Were you still thinking of making the Boss Bass killable and allowing it to respawn?
6-Castle: Looks like a nice combination of gimmicks from the rest of the world. Since you never mentioned any code for making the auto-scrolling section work, I'm guessing you've just put pipes at the end of each incorrect section that take you back to the beginning?
6-S: I'd always thought those levels looked kind of cool. Pity we don't have a good set of screen-scrolling pipes...the entire world would have benefited from them, but especially this stage. Any Layer 3 background for that, do you think? Also, hey, somebody actually used those Timed Lift sprites...I hardly ever see those used in anything.
7-1: Pretty basic, yes, but looks decent enough. Is that ice tileset new? (And is it the only one you think you'll use for the world?)

----------------

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
6-6: That water's on Layer 1 since the ground has to be on Layer 2 to move up and down. I did try using Level Mode 1F, but everything would be practically invisible against the white of the Layer 3 Clouds.

6-Secret: No, there won't be a Layer 3 image there. I have used those custom Timed Lifts in the second part of Pipe Down from Kamek's Island.

6-Castle: I did just use a combination of pipes and secondary entrances to make that section work. The only ASM-based resource that part uses are the blocks that play the correct/incorrect sound when passed to indicate whether or not the player is on the right path.

7-1: The above-ground graphics, like most of this hack's foreground graphics, came from Super Mario Bros. 5 Reborn, so they've been around since late 2010/early 2011. I did had to do new snow-covered pipe graphics though. The underground tileset is new. Additionally, I plan to do a snowy variant of the mushrooms from the sky tileset for a future athletic level.

EDIT: Yet another level is done!

WINTER PEAK 2 - PENGSTA'S PARADISE

Naturally, this level is full of penguin-type enemies. The large ones are reskins of Romi's Bully sprite.

Whoa!

Those Pengsta graphics look nice #w{=)}

Also, good timing with the making of the ice world.
I don't even know what I'm actually doing anymore... will I ever finish a hack?
It's been a long time since I last saw this hack. What I really like about your style is that you never go overboard, while still maintaining the quality we all know from you. I'm really looking forward to the rework. Great job!
Doesn't look bad, but it feels a bit empty. Not sure on why, but it feels like it's lacking something design-wise... Maybe it's just that most levels feel similar. Might be just me, though.

Other than that, it definitely looks pretty neat. The snow on the hills looks weird, though. I guess making a smoother transition would help.

I sort of see what you mean, but at the same time I don't really think that lol.

For example, there are areas in regular Mario where it could look empty, but the level itself is really fun and non linear. I hope you don't think I'm running your hack down Gamma.

In regards to the screens you posted, I love them. I really like how you changed Bullies to penguins. I also really like the snow on the hills like what Aeon said.

Larry's Castle looks really fun to play with all the split paths and vertical levels.

Winter Peak 1 looks very nice with those palettes and graphics. The underground portion looks really beautiful with the icy blue colours. Good job Gamma!

Thanks for all the feedback, guys.

I suppose I should've added this to my last post, but I suppose I can add it here...

VIDEO - PENGSTA'S PARADISE

With that out of the way, it's time for the next update.

WINTER PEAK 3 - BEETLEMANIA!

Nice level design here, but I suggest to put only one big penguin at 0:58, but hey that's my opinion. Also, the penguins are so cute! :3

WINTER PEAK 3 - BEETLEMANIA !: Yay, custom sprites! The graphics are looking nice, except for the BG, which is a bit repetitive. Again, that's my opinion.
Thanks again for the feedback!

I've got another update for you all. Maybe I CAN get this in time for C3, and if not, maybe Christmas.

WINTER PEAK 4 - YOU'RE ON THIN ICE!

There was a Star Coin on the lowest path, and getting it would require extra care when shooting fireballs.

This isn't as easy as it looks. Ice Physics are still in effect, and those cracked blocks will shatter on contact.

I thought that was just another ice block up there!

Double Post Time!

WINTER PEAK 5 - WINTERY WATERWAY (Name may change to Torpedo Tunnle)

The biggest threat in this level is the Torpedoes.

As the level progresses, they become harder to dodge. The crystals are palette animated, so they change colors from pink to blue and back.

All the Teds will complicate getting that Star Coin.

Don't worry. Torpedo Teds aren't the only enemies in the level. There are also some Rip Van Fishes and Blurps, but if you're Fiery, they pose little challenge compared to the Torpedoes.

ANOTHER VIDEO?
Screenshots don't really capture this level as well as video can.

This looks very nice Gamma. It really feels like Mario is swimming in ice cold waters. I especially like the alternating palette crystals. Those look really cool. (<- I wrote that without thinking about the hidden pun lol)

Aesthetic-wise the level looks great, with the translucent tileset and animated crystals. It really sets up the level's atmosphere, so great job on that.

Design-wise, even through it's mostly nice, a few of the Torpedo Ted setups seem a bit annoying to get through (the one at 0:37 is a good example). Just ducking every x seconds and walking/swimming to get away from the torpedo launchers is very annoying for an obstacle, specially considering the water physics slowing Mario down.
I've made some adjustments to the ground in Wintery Waterway, even though I'm sure some of Soda Lake's Torpedo Ted setups were probably more annoying.

Anyway, I finished up a couple more levels.

WINTER PEAK 6 - A CHANCE OF FLURRIES

Well, there are Flurries here, but there are also Pitchin' Chucks throwing snowballs at you.

We also have tall snowmen, which are tweaks of the Pokey disassembly. It moves a little faster and can be killed with 5 fireballs.

WINTER FORTRESS - ICE BIRDO'S FORTRESS

Tricky platforming abounds in this level due to ice physics and moving blocks.

Icy Thwomps and Icebars (reskinned Firebars)

Layer 2 Smash - Now with Ice Physics!

Ice Birdo spits snowflakes that freeze Mario in place in addition to the standard eggs, which must be used to kill it.
