Pokey And Kolorado

But I'm going to do it differently this time.
As some of you might know... I am actually busy with a hack... almost 7 months already. It's a pity that, until recently, I hadn't had ONE finished level, and didn't feel like making a revival thread (the last and first one dated back in November, bumping that would make no sense at all and I honestly want a new thread for this, since the plot has kinda changed).

Ok, I won't completely reveal my plot this time, as it has changed quite some bit, but Kolorado is going to play in it. Whether I'll have him as Luigi's role or NPC, I'm not decided yet, but I think I'll do the latter because otherwise the music will get limited even more.
There will be a plot twist in the game, btw, but I'm not going to tell what it is.

I'm not a star in ExGFX - but I think my use of palettes are decent -. My ASM skills are decent, but still more basic than really advanced. My level design isn't uber. I know barely anything about OW editing, I'll come to that point yet.
Don't expect this hack to be a winner ; always think about the worst-case scenario. See it as a crappy youtube hack.

I ABSOLUTELY HATE SHOWING THE OVERWORLD... but I have to. Yeah, it's noobish.



Some levels have got side-plots. The first one (Short Hills) isn't excluded. Ok, here goes :
Some lower into the valley, once there was a relatively peaceful Fuzzy society, traveling along wires for all sorts of things. However, some Fuzzies began to get mean and joined, and knocked other - usually normal sized - Fuzzies off. They built a tiny village, and created 5 statues to represent their village. 4 of them got stolen by the mean Fuzzies in one night, however, and they sold it to the Beezos, telling them that they needed to fly it to somewhere far away. The Beezos didn't obey that, anyways, and placed them on the hills. The Fuzzies went mad and blocked all village Fuzzies from trying to get those 4 statues.

Later on, the last statue will be stolen.



This hill contains a cannon, two pipes, rocks and... something important.



What can you do in the cannon? Not much... you can shoot out and change from sight. In this level though, there isn't much to see, except for Beezos flying around.



Later on, you'll find Bandit. You can pass if you have 10 coins or more. However, at some point your coin total will drop down to 0. Yeah, Bandit's a bandit after all.



The text is kind of blocked by layer 3, I'll try to disable that soon enough. Btw, this is the lengthy way down to the secret exit.



Megafuzzy's debut. His GFX are still kind of blocky, though, but meh...

Little puzzle.



This is the only time in-game the name of the boss is mentioned. His full name is Ferdinand Y. Fuzzy. Y as of Yellow.



The village. Yeah, it's pretty tiny. Most Fuzzies hurt, but not all. The mayor and a thieve won't hurt, but can provide you access to a door. Everyone is panicky because the fifth statue is stolen now.

This building is kinda important.



The mayor provides you the key for the shop. You can buy a mushroom, a flower, a cape or something mysterious in here. It improves your status, it won't get stored into the item box.
As for the thieve, he'll provide access to :



The two Fuzzies you just saw before you entered the village will greet you.



Battle him. He takes 13 hits, and from 5 hits on, he gets harder pretty fast. He IS a toughie, especially when your status is small. He's definitely not impossible, but his Fuzzy spawning can give him the winning edge, especially after 7 hits, and from 11 hits on, it becomes a frenzy.



Here used to be a statue. Pokey got it. You can't get it before beating Ferdinand.
Outside, celebrating Fuzzies and a ? sphere await you.

Ha no. I thought I already overused them. But maybe in other levels... this is the first level, btw. I DO have others ready, but they stink too much to be shown yet.

An intersection level between World 4 and World 5 (World 5 is the desert, where Pokey's home is) out of all 9 (probably) worlds. Since I'm still creating World 4, I haven't got him ready yet. But I think I'll make a custom sprite out of Kolorado - one that you can control yourself, not an NPC-, instead of letting him play as Luigi's role. On top of that, I can actually make new routines for him, so that you can do pretty cool things, like new attacks.

They will co-operate in some levels. Whether I'll put Kolorado in each level or not, I don't know. It's still a mystery, heh heh.

New gradient, suggested by Ran, over the IRC.

Edit 2 : It's somewhat darker now. All original outside images are now somewhat darker, with this gradient.

I know the Fuzzies can act weird when they touch the platforms (either they fall through, which isn't that weird, but sometimes they also disappear (and sometimes reappear at a random place)). I am fixing that somehow.

Boss looks pretty hard. Maybe slow his X speed by one or two.

As for the fuzzies disappearing, try a different sprite memory header, like 0E.
I've removed my NoFades patch until I can find the brightness code for Star Road warps.
Hmm, yeah I guess I would slow his X-speed down a little bit... he's pretty hard from 5 to 10 hits, strangely he gets somewhat easier after that.

As for the Fuzzies, no, it's not that. I was already using 0E. But I'll try a different setting...

Edit : Actually, 01 works. Thanks! Oh wait no I was too early with that. Heh, must be the interaction, I guess...

I like this already.

SMAS SMBIIJP graphics are usually a great thing IMO, I also like how it is like a RPG with NPCs and cut-scenes. Good job.
I am not a hacker by trade, I am an observer and I can be very observant. I tend to lurk around here to prolong the good experience of playing the original SMW. Whatever can add onto it is something that I will definitely do when I am bored which is often. And I will rarely post and give praise when needed to the hacks that may make me interested to relive memories.

My worst enemy in Mario isn't Bowser but my controller that keeps on getting disconnected from the inside. Might be my memory count.
SMB2 (J) graphics? I don't use them. You mean SMB2 (US/EU) graphics, right? Also, I have some screens for level 2, almost done. I'll show them tomorrow or something.

I suggest that you make a type of block (if you can) that will disapear after Firdinand Y. Fuzzy dies. That way, you could know that they couldn't get to the end without beating him. (sorry if I misspelled stuff)

Humm... yeah I could, I suppose. I am already blocking the end, but they don't change graphics. The blocks are between the fourth platform and the exit, you know what I mean. Good idea, grishnax.

I've started working on the titlescreen... except for the Copyright 2007, 2008 part, and the details in the FG, it's pretty much done.

I made layer 2 paths, it's a miracle.
Also, yes, I'm redoing the Pokey GFX. I'm holding off from SMW's Pokey version. I'm yet to decide whether I'll stick with the current version (SMB2 with SMW palette) or not. Also, he's not 'discoloured' anymore.
Additionally, the secret level tile is blue instead of red.

I'm almost completely done with Ferdinand Y. Fuzzy this time. He's quite a lot different from his last version ; soon I'll make a video of it.

I'm really impressed of all your ASM skills, and also, Pokey's new GFX are much better considering that Wye's hack also has Pokey as the main protagonist and your hack would be too similar from his because of Pokey's GFX, but now that you changed them, everything is awesome! I also found the palette of the title screen's BG really beautiful, keep it up! I hope see the demo out someday, so don't quit your project! :P
