What annoys you about SMW hacking/hackers

Also hacks where all the palettes are very desaturated, except you want every level to look like it's going to rain in 5 minutes.

Maybe those palettes just don't fit your style.

That's why I said it looks like it's going to rain ><
Overly jaded and cynical LPers.

You guys are seriously worse than a french wine-taster in a bad mood and watching your vids makes SMW hacking feel less fun or even worth trying.
My layout has removed you.
Oh, and as far as SMW hacking itself goes, plenty of things are annoying...dealing with the limitations and weirdness of the original SMW, dealing with the limitations and weirdness of Lunar Magic as well as its closed-source nature, figuring out how to use 30+ patches without anything breaking, writing code and not being able to get it working properly, wanting to port certain music that has no decent MIDIs (or SPCs)...but I'd have to say that the most annoying thing about SMW hacking for me is obtaining the right resources. I can't tell you how many times a project has been put on temporary, if not permanent, hiatus for want of one patch, tool, code, set of graphics, or the like. That's probably the biggest reason why I've never finished or released a hack.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.

What would count as a "Copy-Cat", also remember there is a fine line between getting inspired by someone else's work, and just plain copying them.
i was just making a joke, sorry #ab{~:o}

though by copycat i would mean plain copying (since all ideas are pretty much inspirations from other ideas)
- not being able to work on projects and hacks because of school/work

- having a great vision for a hack yet not having the skills yet to make it happen

- When you play someone's hack and see something in that hack that you know that you could have done better if you made the hack.

This actually makes me laugh when you look above it to see this:

- having a great vision for a hack yet not having the skills yet to make it happen
Hacks:
- Item babysitting: especially if I have to drag more than one item all the way around the room and reuse it somewhere else or do a giant chain of events
- Bowser kidnapped the princess (I would like for once to see the princess kidnap Mario and Luigi has to rescue his brother from the psychopath)
- Levels that overstay their welcome
- Spikes and munchers "littering" the level rather than being "built into" the level
- FG and BG being hard to distinguish from one another
- BG palette not suited to the backdrop and creating an improper distortion of distance and natural lighting
- When I notice recurring patterns, especially if they extend to different levels
- Old music that breaks on accurate emulators because it means I played a hack for nothing other than to hit Reject
- That overused ghost house song that slows down the SPC700 on accurate emulators
- People who make "Kirby" hacks where Kirby can't fly or eat people at the very least
- When people edit the fire flower graphic to be a handgun and it still shoots diagonally and bounces rather than going straight
- In older "Wario" hacks: "TIWE UP!" (this is more funny than annoying though. Related: "GAWE OVER")
- Unskippable cutscenes, especially if you replay a level

Hackers, Critics, and Critics who are Hackers:
- People who ragequit when their hack gets rejected even if people liked the hack but found it had some flaws
- People who adamantly believe all criticism must be accepted and applied
- Likewise, people who dismiss all criticism or see it as hating
- People who adamantly believe non-compliance with SMWC standards means it's instantly a bad hack rather than thinking for themselves
- People who quit a hack because they can't handle criticism
- People who stake claim to an aesthetic style that's trendy, especially if it's built out of (mostly or all) "vanilla" tiles
- People who think if the PC isn't a Mario character that it's automatically shit or should be an indie game and not a SMW hack
- People who think it's okay to finish Brutal Mario for Carol (see also: people who use others' hacks as bases without consent and try submitting it here)
- Hackers that dream too big, make this show-stopping hack, then run out of space or into limitations before it's complete (but this is a "don't hate the player, hate the game" annoyance)
- People who start amazing-looking hacks that suddenly fall off the face of the planet

Hacking:
- SPC700 limited to 8 channels and being dissatisfied with the results whenever a song has more than 8 channels which can no longer be merged
- Forgetting good ideas before you can commit them to paper
- Just right-clicking and pasting tiles because the only time you want to hack is when you have no ideas
- The fact that a hack can't just jump out of my head and be done and I actually have to put effort in to make it happen

Hack Section:
- I want to give Zeldara's Glitch City a fair trial since people say it's a fun hack and its purpose is to say you don't need to be a pretty hack to be enjoyable. It may have a symbolic purpose in the section, kind of like how Kumikyoku does

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!

Everything is a remix. (Hope im not taking it out of context)

Now then, things that annoy me with regards to SMW hacking.

-Hackers putting the cap to innovation to their hack designs, effectively becoming a sellout.
-Cancelation of promising hackers.
-People screaming that x resource is overused and expect you to conform to what they say.
-The mentality that if a hacker has used a broken music port makes it automatically their fault that their hack is incompatible with "Insert x emulator here", when it is the fault of the designer (this only applies to those who have started their hacks before the new moderation system)
Modern Redrawn Mario Bros. 1.5 (last update - February 14, 2023, some new bonus frames, tons of minor touchups to various poses)

On Pixel Art Requests: Depends on what it is and if I have the time for it. If its complex and I don't have the time, don't expect me to accept it.

Innovation makes you a sellout? News to me.

-People who whine/scream/flip the bird at other people for their opinions. It's like they expect their opinions to be changed.

Accidental miswording. I meant to say "to" instead of "of". Apologies for any confusion.

Depends on the case. If said criticism is terrible and unhelpful, then they can say what they want (as long as its informed) at that critic. Plus the moment you post your opinion, you can be challenged and are expected to defend it.

This was what I meant. Also, I think I know which hack(s) and hacker(s) made you think this..

True. ;-;

I thought about that, and was gonna suggest it.. :P
I've been meaning to say this hear but totally forgot because I implied it in another thread. #ab{>_<}

You know when people show their work, and then someone else comes and gives HONEST and FAIR criticism? Yeah, well I'm annoyed by the people who then proceed to come in and tell the author of the work to ignore the person criticizing it and giving them advice because they should "ignore the haters" or something else along those lines. #ab{-_-}

I hate it when someone says "that's just your opinion" or anything similar. It's as redundant as it is a non-argument.

That's more of a general annoyance rather than something specific about hacking/hackers but it still happens here.
Hackers who didn't test the hack before releasing it.
Wow, lots of posts on this one!

-Crash Kandicoot - The sucker finally got banned and after all the stupid stuff he's said and done. I even tried helping him out but he just decided to be an idiot instead. Makes me mad. Can I get banned for saying that? If so, I'm sorry, but after all this I think I deserve to say that.

-At this point, when it comes to kaizo traps, most of them have been taken. But it annoys me when people complain about some traps not being "Original".

And on a slightly unrelated note, I still don't agree with some choices about the 7th VLDC. Admittedly, I was butthurt about my level being in 73'rd place, but theres more than that. I still don't get how Underway got 74th (WTF, how is he below me?), I guess staff have different preferences than others.
Looking at you Counterfeit, just because the colors were eye-searing to you doesn't mean they were to others
And the 1st place entry I don't think was that fantastic. The idea of the lava cliff was cool, don't get me wrong, and to be fair, the design was good. But the palettes looked kinda bad (this could just be me though, I'm OCD about palettes), and the gimmick wasn't the most original or interesting. Personally I would've expected more from the first place entry.

2nd and 3rd place were fantastic though!

Well thats the last time you'll hear me harping about that.
Things that annoy me are:
-Artificially lengthening the level: Weather it requires you to take an item with you (item-babysitting) and bringing it back or it makes you run back through the level the opposite way in general. Its a cheap way of making the level much longer.

-Item Babysitting isn't too much of a problem for me, as long as its done in moderation

-Cheap placements: If there is an invisible coin block where you have to jump, blind jumps, overuse of spikes, or bad enemy placement it'll get me annoyed. I don't find it very fine to troll the player. It just makes me want to quit the game sooner.

-Cutoff: If there are small locations of cutoff its not too bad, but if its really noticeable it makes me think their lazy and unprofessional. It doesn't take long to either fix it, or make a tile and import it to fix it. Not really cutoff, but presentation wise, if they use clashing/bad ExGFX I hate that too. Also if the hack contains terrible palettes, it makes want to quit.

-Overused Music: Especially when I test hacks and they all have the same castle, grassland, rock, etc level. music, it gets old for me. Remember back in 2010 when everyone was using the Megaman 2 Dr. Wily stage music? I'll admit, I did it too, and now I don't even want it in my hack because I'm so tired of it.

-Screenshots: If the user posted really crappy screenshots to show off their hack, it turns me away. They could have the best hack in the world, but if they only show sreenshots of flat areas I most likely wont play it.

-Overused bosses: I acquired Boom-Boom from Carol himself, and I intend to use him even though it has been over done. There are some bosses that I don't mind being used but other ones just annoy me. Such as Mouser. Now don't get me wrong, I love the Mouser boss and I may use him (LOL I'm a hypocrite right here), but seeing it over and over again really gets old. Especially if they made the boss room really cheap.

I'm a really picky person when it comes to this, which does make me miss out on some hacks that are quite good. But this thread is about annoying things in hacks. So I felt like I had to give my honest opinion on it.
