Vanilla Hacking is a very good way to start off on your hacking career into SMW. Just a couple tips I'd like to give you to get you started:
1) Do not announce a hacking project just yet until you are familiar with how Lunar Magic works, and have enough experience with it to create fully functioning levels looking proper. Showing off screenshots filled with cutoff is only going to get you postcount++ replies from other users telling you to do the above. This doesn't apply if you're showing off a pallete you think looks really good.
2) Actual advice this time: Lunar Magic is an incredibly powerful tool... not as in it requires a strong processor. It is very user friendly, but at first it will look overwhelming. All that stuff that looks complicated, like SuperExGFX and related, you really shouldn't need to mess with that much if you're just beginning. Your best friends will be the Sprite Toggle, Layer 1 toggle, Add Objects Window, and Add Sprites Window. Experience with all that other stuff will come as you experiment.
3) Don't get too ambitious at first. Lots of projects end up getting cancelled because the users behind them, mostly new comers, think they can make this awesome hack and end up dropping the project because it is too much to handle for their... level. (There is no easy way of saying that) Start small, short and sweet. Remember to have fun too.
4) Make what you want. Take advice from those who are experienced, unless it is bullshit advice
Hope this can help you out in the long run!
