Mario's Mysterious Journey

Standard

Hello SMWCentral, this is my first post here. I decided that it is time to make a real hack after some one level hacks I made but never posted anywhere.

Anyways, here are some pictures of a level I did. It only shows the first part, the second part will be underground.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------- Progress ------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------

World 1 ( Lvls Done 5/5 ) Grassland World

World 2 ( Lvls Done 2/5 ) Dark World

World 3 ( Lvls Done 0/1 ) Dark World/Final Level World

Special World ( Lvls Done 1/? ) Challenge World

Total Lvls Done ( 8/? )

If you want to support this hack here is the userbar for it

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hehe, as I said on Skype, these are some noice screenshots. Good to see you finally made a thread. :3

You may disagree with me on this if you wish, but those decorative tiles look just like solid tiles. I think you should either make them darker than the rest of the foreground, or do away with them entirely.

I do like the atmosphere you have going on here, and the mist looks great with the rest of it. Hope to see more.

Amazing for a first hack. The level design seems great.

The same person? Oh nevermind.

I agree with you, the palette is still not final and the level itself is just about halfway done so some things can change later like the palette
other than that thanks for your feedback.

Thank you =) and btw this is not my first hack i did 2 - 3 one level hacks 2 years ago but never released them it was just for myself. ^^
This doesn't look like a first hack by any means.

Like MP said ("Your mom" right now that is) The background tiles look solid. Make them darker, but I wanna emphasize that you should make the outline a dark color, but not black. It still is kinda misleading if you don't do that.

Here's a good example:

Otherwise, I think your mist should go in front of every other layer, but thats probably just me being nit-picky.

All that aside, this looks really good!

..Jeez, I forgot how blunt you are.

The snapshot demonstrated what I trying to say. What'd I miss. Do you just not like Tails_155 or something?
I don't think he's really being blunt.

On that screenshot, although I can see the ground is being used as decorative tiles, these still confuse me because they're as bright as the actual ground, in my honest opinion. You'd need to make it even darker if you definitely don't want the player to get confused with this kind of decoration.
Then again, heck, you can always use something better than ground tiles to decorate your levels.
I agree about the ground. I guess it's sharing palettes with the water. Try to give it a different palette slot and make it a bit darker than the solid ground. The atmosphere is very well done, looks somewhat spooky. Don't forget also about grass tiles or bushes, they are also good examples of decoration. Also, if you like messing with tileset mixing, you can create some skulls, bones, etc. that may fit with this spooky atmosphere.
Ok here is a new update on the level like i said the second part will be a underground section and is a lot darker than the forest as you can see below.

I changed the palette in the forest pictures that looked like solid ground into a darker green.

Anyways here are the pictures and btw the level is still not done i would say about 70% - 80% is completed and this is not level 1.

So that's it for now the next pictures will be a new level i think.
Neat, it's very dark. Although, the non-solid bricks are far too hard to tell apart from their solid counterparts, and may need a pallete adjusting.

Is this pipe solid?
Because if it is makes no sense, something solid on a non-solid BG
#ab{>_>}#ab{<_<}
Even though the player never will hit it, also the palette of this pipe need be darkened, it definitively clash with the brightness of this guesswhat cave
#unbanMB980
Things also wouldn't have such reflections at a low light level like that. You could perhaps use a bit more color.
Probably late for this but He didn't explain why it was bad so I guess that's why I said he was blunt. But I digress.

Anyway, the background looks funky and some stuff shouldn't reflect so white when the object is dark. Please change it.

If you look closely, there are actually both solid blocks and non-solid ones. The pipe is resting on the solid variant.
Ok i changed some palettes

I changed the pipe palette and reduced the reflection on the spikes and on the pipe.
I made the non solid blocks a bit darker to tell what is solid and what not.

and some new screenshots only 2 but hey

And with that the level is now 100% completed now.

In the next update i will show level 1.

And by the way guys thanks for all the feedback so far =)
Wow this hack looks really good! Your new palettes look perfect and your level looks really fun. It really goes to show how nice you can make the original SMW tileset look. Good job TheSorrow! Cant wait to see more!

most of the screenshots are looking great, TheSorrow. one thing that is noticeable is that the cave palette (the foreground) can be better saturated. you could create a gradient between palette row 2. this is so the shade of the foreground can improve, and since this looks like a dark level, i recommend choosing dark colors.

another suggestion can be to lower the background star colors. this palette can be found in palette row 1.

looking great so far; keep it up!
My Inspiring Quotes on Personal Growth and Change:

"Resolved financial/personal problems equal greater growth!"

"The only constant thing in life is change; nothing is set in stone. The old is replaced with the new. Forgive yourself for past mistakes. When many different problems in your life are resolved (personal, financial, etc.), newfound strength and confidence is gained in the process. Usually, failures, lack of assertiveness, disappointments, incompetence, low self-esteem and lack of self-respect, financial struggles, and setbacks can cause us to change and take action to solve any problem, leading to increased strength and confidence. This you learn from experience.

I have been experiencing this aforementioned newfound strength and confidence myself for the past FOUR to EIGHT years or so, getting stronger with each passing year, learning with each mistake I make and becoming more joyful in the process. Because of this newfound confidence I've acquired over the years, finding my passion is of utmost importance in 2022! You can develop this strength and confidence in yourself as well!"

To whoever's reading this, you are amazing and you are capable of doing equally amazing things. Gather confidence and be yourself! Say goodbye to the old you and welcome the new you! It wants to arise every moment, but you don't let it. Learn from your mistakes and never make that mistake again! Find your passion and live it!"

Finding my passion in life, but I may still be active on SMWCentral from time to time. Still enjoy playing many hacks, but I'm widening my perspective on life and opening myself to the new.
