should the laser blocks also be solid when active (not only damaging the player)?

In one of the final levels, mario can pass through them even while activated (& takes damage), should it be also solid so the player can't "cheat"?

Last time I checked, laser (and other forms of light) were not solid. We're not making a Kaizo, we're not anal about level breaks.

Even if the player tanks through the laser, they're still getting hurt (assuming I'm understanding you correctly), meaning it's not really a "cheat".

You do realize that in most Mario games, you can tank through certain enemies by getting hit? Even in the classic "Bowser on the bridge" battle, you can tank through him (although NSMB made this impossible in the final battle by making Bowser deliver knockback). Now I know that spike pillars from SMW can't be tanked through, but think of things that are similar to lasers. Remember the torches from the airships of SMB3? Yeah, you could tank through those if you wanted. Tanking through something like that DOES have a cost: you lose a powerup.

Why?

Seems pointless. Just have them hurt the player and be done with it. Why do they need to be solid or knock back the player?
So the player can't walk through them, it's not rocket science.
