[C] 4-1: The Epic Misleading Cave

Link Thread Closed
Because starting worlds with grassland is too mainstream!

First section, features a pretty simple secret that takes you to three red coins and one flower.

Just some random screens of the underground section so far.
As the title and possibly some of the screenshots may suggest, this is gonna be a maze-ish level. I'm not sure if it'll turn out "puzzling", but it's certainly not gonna be linear.

To be honest, I was pretty misdirected myself on how this level was gonna work a while ago (I was just throwing out random doors and paths), but I think I'm now aware enough on how it's gonna work. I'd post an IPS, but I haven't set screen exits or made any sublevels yet, so yeah.

(SNN: sorry for taking long to post screens, but for the past days I've only been playing around with the editor - which I'm not too experienced with - and I hadn't put up anything really solid until today.)
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
Thanks for the update.

Everything looks pretty good so far. I'd suggest changing the palette/background of the outdoor area so it looks a bit less like the original game's 4-1 - otherwise, the rest seems fine.
Try using palette 0A for the foreground (in the starting area). It's functional and it looks different.
^ Thanks for the suggestion, but by the time you posted it I had already decided on which FG pallete I was gonna use. :< (Also the color you suggested really does look different, but I guess I prefer to go for something more usual-looking for this level...)

Have a few screens to see the new aesthetical setup (haven't changed the BG only because I couldn't find anything better) and also some of the new outside areas.

Well, what else can I say - I'm possibly done with this level. Have an IPS (hopefully it works; I have tested it, but haven't gone through the entire level because it's really late for me right now). I'm really happy with how my first finished YI level turned out, but other opinions are always helpful, especially because I'm fairly new at this stuff. :>

For a so-called "first finished level", this is extremely well made. The design is so elaborate and cohesive - I can tell you've put a lot of thought into it. Aside from one particularly unfair spot and a couple of minor tweaks, I really can't think of anything else you'd need to improve upon.

Shame, I kind of expected another invisible cloud here. On that note, you did a great job at scattering these throughout the level.

This is more of a personal suggestion to make your level more expansive, but I think it would be neat if you removed one of the red coins from the very first room in the level (with the 3 coins/1 flower) and made it so you can jump on this pole from the egg block. Would be a pretty cool place to hide a red coin.

Might want to add object xFD to the screen above here; the camera scrolling is a bit wonky.

This is the only part of your level I have an issue with. There is absolutely no way the player is going to know that the ? cloud is a horizontal red platform on their first go, and since they can't see below them from where they can shoot it, they'll almost certainly miss out on the chance to get the flower/coins. I know I did. I'd suggest lowering the ? cloud a bit so the player at least has a fair chance.

Also, I didn't test it, but it seems like it may be possible to bypass most of the level if you hit only the far right sand block and use a Lantern Ghost to bounce up, thus using the big spring ball from on top of the sand blocks (if that run-on sentence made any sense).

Great work overall. If you have the time/motivation, I'd love to see you pick up another level or two for this.
Thanks! Really glad you liked my level. :D

My only options for an invisible cloud in there are a switch and an 1-up, but I think it's way too obvious for the latter (and there's absolutely no use for the former), so I left it as-is.

I actually wasn't expecting anyone to get up there. :P I also happened to move that egg block (it was kinda annoying to collect eggs in the aim of that plant), so I couldn't do that.

I fixed everything else, including the spring ball break which was actually possible (but annoying enough to do).

I've updated the IPS link: here.

Thanks, that's a really nice thing to hear. :3 I might.

Great, everything looks good to go. I'll mark this as cleared unless someone else has any sort of feedback they'd like to add.
