Luigi Island

Standard

I guess this hack is one of my bests--
Luigi needs more love.
After my 'punishment', i simply got a idea: "What if i made a hack called Luigi Island?" and then it came.
Here are a few lotsa screenshots:

Also:

CUSTOM MUSIC!!!
Finally, but still no ASM. i suck at that.

The levels are now larger than: #13 screens.

Comment and say what you think!
(if you say that the water palette in the BG is weird, i know right)

The same person? Oh nevermind.

I am liking the graphics, and it looks like you've got some nice decorations and variation in your design.

I'm going to be frank here because you're still fairly new; it seems like you're starting way too many projects. On the first two pages of this forum, I see seven different hack threads, which is kind of insane. Most people can't even do two large-scale hacks at the same time, much less even more.

I think that you have the potential to make something really good, I really do. I like what I am seeing here. It's just that I'm concerned you're biting off more than you can chew.

My advice is to drop (or at least put on hold) all of your hacks except one, really give 100% to that one project, and then see how good you can make it. Once you've successfully completed one nice, fleshed-out, high-quality hack, you can go back and pick up some of your other projects if you're still interested in them.

Good luck with your hacking!

I'm mostly doing that.

Eh.. I don't really find this hack "interesting". It's just another generic hack, but I'll comment on it.

The slopes near the top of the screen are gonna be glitchy. Firstly, the slope on the top; it needs another ledge near it or else Luigi will be able to enter inside it. And, the slope on the bottom; unless you set the FG/BG index to cave, it proably won't act properly. Otherwise, the level design is fine. Also, these are not "details". You just put lots of non-sense dirt. Don't spam those, these just don't make sense. Also, why does the water in the BG still look weird? Fix it already.

Oh god no. While the overworld itself isn't really bad, those green and brown dirt make no sense. Just use one color, proably brown. There also are some perspective errors on the bottom. Also, add some icebergs and stuff, as the water is looking pretty flat and boring, or add more islands and stuff.

The grass isn't properly shaded. It shouldn't be dark --> bright (assuming the light source is top left), instead, it should be bright --> dark. Also, I see non-sense dirt decoration on the bottom. I wonder why people like Tails_155 style so much? Anyways, your level design seems to be fine.

More non-sense dirt decoration. It's not much of a problem, but it just doesn't make sense.

That's all.

Extras

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

Advertising Space

Being a one-world hack doesn't make it immune to criticism.

My god please get rid of that filter.
Game itself doesn't look bad at all.

I have some gripes though. First is your background/sig. You should use a red or pink font. Your text is unreadable in black.

Second is I think the title should be changed. There exists a hack called "Luigi and the Island of Mystery" which people might confuse this for. It's full length with loads of ASM so people might expect to play that downloading your hack.

Hm. I fixed them.

Well. I'm not done with the OW. and i'm going to keep the Green thing.

This is a golden star. Collecting 5 gives you 3 lifes.
Is very hard to find them.

Just because, a screenshot of the tiles.

These are custom.

That's all.

Obviously, he wants to add more design to the grass, it's better than having bland, full, non-decorated dirt, he wants to use it, so let him. Not trying to be rude if that's how this sounds to you, but it's his hack, let him design it himself. Just because you give criticism, doesn't mean he'll do what you want, it's your opinion, not a fact.
Giving criticism is literally saying what's wrong with the stuff they are giving out. Quite frankly the floating dirt makes absolutely no sense and is a rather tired, stupid and honestly lazy way of decorating your levels. There are far better ways to use dirt for decoration than just having clods of it floating for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Anyway the design of the levels themselves are far better than your previous works from what I've seen, though it does seem to still be lacking opposition, as in enemies. And as a side note having the caps of pipes upside down makes the lighting come from below when everywhere else the light comes from above. If you can, try to use the top caps for the bottom.

Video!

WATCH

The same person? Oh nevermind.

The fact that the player can stand on the trees and some of the floating dirt masses is obscure. If I were playing this without having watched the videos, I would've assumed they're just decorations, not platforms.
The dirt masses are especially a problem, there's absolutely nothing that differs them from the non-solid ones.

The first power-up could be placed somewhere better. Where it is now forces the player to make an awkward back step while at the same time, deal with enemies in the way.

The hill decorations at around 1:54 are cutoff at where they meat the ground. It doesn't look too good. I don't think it's exactly necessary to do that pattern with the ground tiles.

After that same point in the video the level design starts looking straightforward and empty, like you rushed the design.

Hm. i guess i'll need to remove the hills.
I didn't rush level design. #ab{:S} Well of the 'fact' that you can climb trees, don't worry. I'll change it to these tiles instead of trees.

The same person? Oh nevermind.

Change Luigi's graphics because he has a please kill me face.

So no one has pointed out the horribly glitched-out Spinies that Lakitu is throwing? Yeah, please fix those. Otherwise, this is not looking too bad. There's some cutoff, the overworld needs some work, and there are a couple weird tile behaviors, but the graphics and overall design seem nice.

The gliched spinies is going to be easily fixed.

Why are there so many Note blocks in this one map16 page. Unless you have some sort of special custom block, when they are jumped on, they will return to the original unchanged noteblock. Just asking out of pure curiousity.
