Should I work on a full-length pure vanilla SMW hack?

I plan on working on a Super Mario World hack that can be ported to the Game Boy Advance under Super Mario Advance 2's remake of SMW. WhiteYoshiEgg already made a pure vanilla hack, but that was only 6 levels long. Mine is going to replace ALL of the levels, without making a custom overworld, title screen, or palletes. If you want a version with more custom stuff, I will make a later version of the hack with those added. Right now, I want to know what you guys think of the idea.
Depends on how much effort you want to put into it. You'd need to avoid any Map16 tiles, custom sprites, and just have custom palettes, and even that's debatable.

If you want to spend a good year or so making a hack like that, by all means, go ahead.
Your choice. It would definitely be interesting to see a hack being ported under SMA2's remake of Super Mario World; however, like MP said, you'd have to avoid using custom resources to make it fully vanilla and fall under the restrictions given. If you're going to make a hack like that, then good luck. I'd like to see how it will turn out in the future.

The answer to any "should I" question is almost always going to be "try and see."

You lose nothing by trying.

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

Only if you want to.

Speaking as a let's player and a non-hacker here.
If your hack's pure Vanilla, I think you should keep it short.
10 levels max with good level design.

that sounds really boring

I use my hair to express myself.

Not a bad idea, but don't expect a lot of feedback, to be honest.
If you pull off a better job than The New Mario World then I'll be really interested to see.

So you'd keep the original overworld? That would be a removal reason, right?

Anyway, it all depends on the exectution. But, to be honest, I'd rather see something new and innovative instead of boring old vanilla. I mean, I've already played SMW, why should I play it again?

But is playing entirely new levels like playing super mario world? I particularly don't see anything wrong to not edit the overworld if you're basically going to be making an "alternate" super mario world.
In all honesty, a good hack is not dependent on whether the creator used strictly vanilla resources or not.

A good hack simply depends oh HOW well the creator made the hack.

Some might think that a hack will not be that fun if it is strictly vanilla because they might have played some dull vanilla hacks in the past, but that may be just he result of other people making hacks which lack creativity.

If a creator pours a lot of creativity and thinks of things that nobody has ever done before vanilla wise then they too can bring originally and excitement to a vanilla hack and make a vanilla hack great.

:)
i agree; it would feel a bit like a sequel to the gameboy advance version of super mario world. custom palettes would be the only thing that you could edit, but still, it would ruin the feeling of a "sequel" to the original (you can still creator minor custom palettes though, like the sky colors; it reminded me of super mario world's sequel: super mario world - the lost levels). a sequel to the gameboy advance version would be a fun thing to do, as long as you think of some creative ideas for a unique hack.

an unedited super mario world overworld really isn't a removal reason, but like everyone else says: it creates less of a fun factor and feels less adventurous this way. but i'm not sure if a custom overworld would work on the super mario advance 2 version, so it's ok to leave the original overworld.
My Inspiring Quotes on Personal Growth and Change:

"Resolved financial/personal problems equal greater growth!"

"The only constant thing in life is change; nothing is set in stone. The old is replaced with the new. Forgive yourself for past mistakes. When many different problems in your life are resolved (personal, financial, etc.), newfound strength and confidence is gained in the process. Usually, failures, lack of assertiveness, disappointments, incompetence, low self-esteem and lack of self-respect, financial struggles, and setbacks can cause us to change and take action to solve any problem, leading to increased strength and confidence. This you learn from experience.

I have been experiencing this aforementioned newfound strength and confidence myself for the past FOUR to EIGHT years or so, getting stronger with each passing year, learning with each mistake I make and becoming more joyful in the process. Because of this newfound confidence I've acquired over the years, finding my passion is of utmost importance in 2022! You can develop this strength and confidence in yourself as well!"

To whoever's reading this, you are amazing and you are capable of doing equally amazing things. Gather confidence and be yourself! Say goodbye to the old you and welcome the new you! It wants to arise every moment, but you don't let it. Learn from your mistakes and never make that mistake again! Find your passion and live it!"

Finding my passion in life, but I may still be active on SMWCentral from time to time. Still enjoy playing many hacks, but I'm widening my perspective on life and opening myself to the new.

a vanilla hack is an original concept?

Good point.
And this thread just killed any hope I had of actually starting to hack Super Mario World.

I can't do the processes needed to insert blocks, sprites, hell even music is pretty much out of my reach. I tried, but trying to understand the instructions for a lot of this stuff is about as possible as me creating a missile and blowing up Russia. It won't happen.

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but since the general consensus is that vanilla is bad, and using things that appeared in other hacks is ALSO bad, I just don't see any reason that I should bother trying to get into hacking the game.

I have fun designing levels sure, but after a while, creating things only for yourself gets boring. It's nice to hear something, but if the idea is that vanilla is bad and it needs to be chocolate, what's the point?

I'm just trying to understand, cause when I finally get some drive and some excitement to get on here and finally get myself to start on a hack, this is what I see. And I've got to say, it's really a mood killer for me...

If you have the motivation to start a hack, start one. Don't worry about the whole "vanilla vs. chocolate" thing- there are audiences for both. If you make something fun to play, people will notice.

It's generally a good idea to make things for yourself and not others. If you want to get fame or renown then SMW hacking really ain't the way to go.

vanilla isn't bad per se, i just dont see any reason to be excited about "a full length vanilla hack" with nothing special going for it, which is what this thread proposed.

you can definitely make something unique with vanilla, but "a vanilla hack" alone is a boring concept.

think of ways to do something special without anything fancy and it can definitely still be good.
