NAME: SMW: The Creator
AUTHOR: dggonzalz
DESCRIPTION:
Well, I wasn't planning on submitting this just yet, but since my hard drive crashed and I lost my files, I am not going to be updating this for a while. So I might as well give a little something back to the SMWC community for their support.

Here is a hack I've been working on since mid-2013 up to this point. It's not much, but it should keep you busy for an hour or two.

PLOT: The Mario Bros. were enjoying some cake with the Princess when all of a sudden an airship comes to wreck the castle and takes Peach. Could it be Bowser again? Or is it someone different, for once? Well, we certainly aren't going to find out just by sitting there, now will we?

This hack features:
Custom music
Custom graphics
Custom HDMA
Custom blocks
Custom sprites
Custom patches

I hope you like it and feel free to give feedback.

I had a lot of fun with this hack. It's maybe not the most exciting in terms of doing completely new things, but the level design is completely solid all the way through and you pull off the SMB3 style masterfully, to the point where this doesn't feel far off from something that could be an actual Mario game. I definitely hope that you can manage to recover your files so that you can finish the hack.

That being said, there are still a few errors here and there. One of them is fairly serious: The second pipe needed to progress in 3-5 dumps you in a cave without a floor, outright killing you without any chance to avoid it. Looking in Lunar Magic, this seems to be a layer 2 problem; using the "H-scroll: None" layer 2 scroll setting causes the layer 2 position to carry over from the last level you were in, so the cage that's supposed to carry Mario ends up somewhere offscreen. I could have sworn there was a fix patch for this, but since the patches section is telling me otherwise I'd suggest either redesigning the room or adding a one-screen room before it to reset the layer 2 position. Now this isn't completely a game-breaking problem (due to the warp zone, as well as being able to bring a Yoshi and do a suicide jump over the wall blocking you from continuing), but it's still serious enough (and easy enough to fix even without access to all of your files, since all you need is Lunar Magic) that it makes my verdict for this hack a removal. I'd gladly accept the hack if just this one thing was fixed, though.

And let me take this moment to bring up some other (less serious) issues, as well as some other random thoughts about the hack:

- I really like the intro cutscene. Making the actual cutscene take up most of the screen, rather than confining it to a tiny box at the top and having the rest of the screen black like most people do, makes it look much nicer.

- You seem to have some conflict going on between your HDMA effects and the original SMW windowing: when a message box appears the HDMA disappears, and it flickers rapidly during the end-of-level iris-in. It's been a while since I did any work with HDMA, but I believe this might be due to a conflict in which channel it uses?

- There's a noticeable freeze for a second or so while the music loads whenever you get a star. I'm not all that familiar with AddmusicK yet, but I believe this can be fixed by making the star song a global track.

- Yoshi's flutter jump feels really weird. It completely cancels out blue shell flight, even though Yoshi still gets the wings; landing on an enemy during the flutter arc doesn't make you bounce, but just continue like nothing happened; and since you can just hold the jump button for consecutive flutters, you can easily use it in a lot of places to just soar over large parts of the level. This is especially noticeable in the angry sun level.

- The Rocky Wrenches disappear behind the fog in the airship levels, which is slightly obnoxious. Also, unlike in SMB3, their wrenches block fireballs.

- The fire snakes aren't bothered by walls or ceilings at all, but just go straight through them. Whoever coded them apparently only tested them on open flat surfaces.

- I'm not a particularly big fan of how the secret exit of 2-Pyramid is right at the end of the level, since all it does is forces you to replay the exact same level twice in a row.

- The Morton battle doesn't seem to agree very well with your patch for additional fireballs, since spamming them makes random glitchy tiles show up in the background.

- Even looking in Lunar Magic, I can only find two dragon coin flowers in 3-2.

- The POW block kills absolutely everything, including turn block bridges and the tops of the extending pipes. While kind of hilarious, I somewhat doubt this is intentional.

- The 250 time star in 3-6 is kind of unintuitive, since it only teleports you when the timer is at exacly 250, rather than greater than 250 like you would expect. The first time I got there with enough time I thought it was outright broken.

- There seems to be some form of music problem in the sky world map: when exiting a level it first starts playing one song before immediately switching to another.

- After finding the hidden star in 4-house, I'm wondering if being able to get a star and access the star world by simply eating the berries with Yoshi in 2-house is intentional?

- The fourth star world level was really funny and probably the only level where I have seen the Windows graphics utilized well. Dear lord that guy had a lot of Lunar Magic windows open :V Also the antivirus icons for enemies were hilarious, especially the Defender Pokey.

As I mentioned above, due to the semi-mandatory progress pipe in 3-6 outright killing you, my verdict for this is removal. If you fix that, though, even if you ignore the other small things I mentioned, I'll gladly switch that to accepting.

I'd put the difficulty at easy, since other than that pipe I'm fairly certain I only had a single death in the entire hack, and that was due to not following the instructions in the super-speed autoscroll section in that same level.

This hack is a masterpiece!~ I had lots of fun playing it, and I loved all the custom stuff you put inside this hack.

The level design is good, always entertaining and very well done. There's always something new in each level, it can be a new gimmick, a new item, and so on. It makes the game never boring; actually, the player will keep playing in order to see more of it. That's the feel it trasmitted in me. A great job from this point of view.

The aesthetics are pretty appealing as well. They were pleasant to look and neatly assembled together. A really good job, nothing more to say.

A few misc issues I'd like to point out: a major one I met (not counting the one YCZ mentioned already) is that sometimes the player has the opportunity to grab a leaf powerup off screen (for example, in the second airship level, if I recall correctly): if the player does so, the game freezes. While I have no idea what this is caused by, I think that if you place the question blocks differently, this freeze can be prevented (again, I guess you can have the chance of freezing game in just a few sections, so it should be an easy fix). Another one is the slowdown caused by the possibility to shoot 10 fireballs: infact, if the screen happens to have a few more sprites than usual, and you shoot tons of fireballs, you can get a massive slowdown. It can't be avoided, unless you give the SA-1 patch a try. A last, minor issue I'd like to point out is in Morton's battle. Here I shot lots of fireballs at Morton, and the layer 3 got a bit glitchy. I guess this fireball patch caused more troubles than else, ya?~

Difficulty is easy, some parts are questionable, but the whole game is pretty easy.

Even if some issues must be fixed, I'd accept this hack. This is a demo, and for a demo's standards this is too good to not be accepted. So yeah, I considered the overall rather than the smaller issues. Good luck finishing this one, I can't wait to play the full version~
I have resubmitted my entry with some fixes. (Not sure if I'm allowed to post it in the waiting hacks section again, though.)

I've replaced the cage in 3-5 with the flying orange platform so that the player does not fall and die instantly. Hopefully that was the only game-breaking glitch it had, because I thought I had tested the heck out of this thing. I've also fixed some small inconveniences in other levels (2-Pyramid, 3-2), to my abilities, considering I can't do much without the original files. As for HDMA, AMK, and other bugs due to the patches I've applied, I can't fix them as easily as I would if I knew which freespaces I used to put them into the ROM (I jotted them down on a text file, but you could pretty much guess what happened to it at this point xD)

Yes, this was intentional ^^.

Anyways, thank you all for your feedback. I'm glad to hear that most of it is positive and I appreciate your help in making me become a better ROM hacker.

If there are proper Asar versions of your patches, not knowing which freespace you used isn't a problem, since the program can remove the code from the old patching on its own. As for other tools, it shouldn't be a problem either way if you can recreate your sprite/block/music/whatever lists, since they reinsert everything when you use them anyway.

smw: the creator v1.1 - dggonzalz:

this hack was very fun to play! the cutscenes that were introduced in the game reminded me of new super mario bros. wii, which the plot was that princess peach and mario were having a piece of cake with koopalings and minions then attacking the poor castle. the level design was outstanding, and felt like a classic nintendo game! now, the issues await:

first of all, i love the graphics! they were reminisce of super mario world beta's graphics and super mario bros. 3. i also liked the status bar and the wall-jumping ability; the ability was easy to find out when i ran into a wall, so it was pretty convenient. the hdma in the levels that had message boxes were acting strangely. firstly, when a message box is hit, the hdma flickers on and off when the message is read. same with the title-screen and when entering/leaving levels. the best advice i could give here is to avoid having hdma in the title-screen, and fixing the hdma channels. when i fight boom-boom, the status bar disappears for a split-second. not sure what could be causing this, but you should take it into consideration. the castle-destruction scene had a weird issue: when the castle is being destroyed, the scene completely pauses and resumes for a split second. this could be due to incompatible patches or any patch inserted incorrectly. world 1-castle had issues with the layer 3 mist: the sprites went behind the mist, and may have caused unfair hits at times; you may want to look into this, as it is pretty annoying to get hit by items that appear to be "invisible".

the level design was great for the most part, but there were a few levels that had a tad bland design, like world 1-4 and world 1-5. but for the most part, the level design was varied, lacked repetition, and was very fun to play! a few parts of the hack had parts of levels that were reminisce of super mario bros. 3. world 1-castle also was a bit short compared to other levels. another big issue that needs to be fixed: everytime a level is beaten, the hdma sky does not fade-out, like the rest of the graphics do. you may be able to fix it with a patch, but i'm not sure. other than that, there weren't that many issues with the entire hack, so i'll say that this hack should be accepted.

the difficulty would be easy for the most part, since there wasn't too much difficulty, as the enemies were placed so easily to be passed.
My Inspiring Quotes on Personal Growth and Change:

"Resolved financial/personal problems equal greater growth!"

"The only constant thing in life is change; nothing is set in stone. The old is replaced with the new. Forgive yourself for past mistakes. When many different problems in your life are resolved (personal, financial, etc.), newfound strength and confidence is gained in the process. Usually, failures, lack of assertiveness, disappointments, incompetence, low self-esteem and lack of self-respect, financial struggles, and setbacks can cause us to change and take action to solve any problem, leading to increased strength and confidence. This you learn from experience.

I have been experiencing this aforementioned newfound strength and confidence myself for the past FOUR to EIGHT years or so, getting stronger with each passing year, learning with each mistake I make and becoming more joyful in the process. Because of this newfound confidence I've acquired over the years, finding my passion is of utmost importance in 2022! You can develop this strength and confidence in yourself as well!"

To whoever's reading this, you are amazing and you are capable of doing equally amazing things. Gather confidence and be yourself! Say goodbye to the old you and welcome the new you! It wants to arise every moment, but you don't let it. Learn from your mistakes and never make that mistake again! Find your passion and live it!"

Finding my passion in life, but I may still be active on SMWCentral from time to time. Still enjoy playing many hacks, but I'm widening my perspective on life and opening myself to the new.
I played the new version, and there's nothing much to add to my previous review. The most noticeable edit is that section in level 3-5, which has been replaced with a sprite. I must say, anyway, that this part became a bit boring, since there are no sprites to avoid; just coins. The sprite you used also proceeds very very slowly, so if you could have spiced up this part a bit, it would've been better.

Despite that small niptick from me, I think the overall level design didn't change much: always fun, very entertaining and one of the best I've met. This time, I took more time to play each level and it just confirmed what I said in the previous review: no matter what path you choose, the player won't be bored to find all the possible ones, since all the levels are different, and the player is curoius to see more. Again, a good job from this point of view.

The aesthetic kept unchanged as well: very colorful, pretty appealing and neatly combined. I believe this is one of the hack whose aesthetic keeps consistent through the whole hack. I know it's hard to keep it up, but you somehow managed to, and as a final result, it's pretty good.

Since the previous issues got fixed, this time I haven't spotted any, so nice job.

Difficulty is easy, design kept unchanged overall.

Not a big surprise here, rejaccepted x10. Now that your hack is free from silly issues, I think that this deserves its place to the hacks section. Good luck with the project~
Well there doesn't seem to be much more activity going on here, so accepted it is.
