Well, I wasn't planning on submitting this just yet, but since my hard drive crashed and I lost my files, I am not going to be updating this for a while. So I might as well give a little something back to the SMWC community for their support.
Here is a hack I've been working on since mid-2013 up to this point. It's not much, but it should keep you busy for an hour or two.
PLOT: The Mario Bros. were enjoying some cake with the Princess when all of a sudden an airship comes to wreck the castle and takes Peach. Could it be Bowser again? Or is it someone different, for once? Well, we certainly aren't going to find out just by sitting there, now will we?
This hack features:
Custom music
Custom graphics
Custom HDMA
Custom blocks
Custom sprites
Custom patches
I hope you like it and feel free to give feedback.
I had a lot of fun with this hack. It's maybe not the most exciting in terms of doing completely new things, but the level design is completely solid all the way through and you pull off the SMB3 style masterfully, to the point where this doesn't feel far off from something that could be an actual Mario game. I definitely hope that you can manage to recover your files so that you can finish the hack.
That being said, there are still a few errors here and there. One of them is fairly serious: The second pipe needed to progress in 3-5 dumps you in a cave without a floor, outright killing you without any chance to avoid it. Looking in Lunar Magic, this seems to be a layer 2 problem; using the "H-scroll: None" layer 2 scroll setting causes the layer 2 position to carry over from the last level you were in, so the cage that's supposed to carry Mario ends up somewhere offscreen. I could have sworn there was a fix patch for this, but since the patches section is telling me otherwise I'd suggest either redesigning the room or adding a one-screen room before it to reset the layer 2 position. Now this isn't completely a game-breaking problem (due to the warp zone, as well as being able to bring a Yoshi and do a suicide jump over the wall blocking you from continuing), but it's still serious enough (and easy enough to fix even without access to all of your files, since all you need is Lunar Magic) that it makes my verdict for this hack a removal. I'd gladly accept the hack if just this one thing was fixed, though.
And let me take this moment to bring up some other (less serious) issues, as well as some other random thoughts about the hack:
- I really like the intro cutscene. Making the actual cutscene take up most of the screen, rather than confining it to a tiny box at the top and having the rest of the screen black like most people do, makes it look much nicer.
- You seem to have some conflict going on between your HDMA effects and the original SMW windowing: when a message box appears the HDMA disappears, and it flickers rapidly during the end-of-level iris-in. It's been a while since I did any work with HDMA, but I believe this might be due to a conflict in which channel it uses?
- There's a noticeable freeze for a second or so while the music loads whenever you get a star. I'm not all that familiar with AddmusicK yet, but I believe this can be fixed by making the star song a global track.
- Yoshi's flutter jump feels really weird. It completely cancels out blue shell flight, even though Yoshi still gets the wings; landing on an enemy during the flutter arc doesn't make you bounce, but just continue like nothing happened; and since you can just hold the jump button for consecutive flutters, you can easily use it in a lot of places to just soar over large parts of the level. This is especially noticeable in the angry sun level.
- The Rocky Wrenches disappear behind the fog in the airship levels, which is slightly obnoxious. Also, unlike in SMB3, their wrenches block fireballs.
- The fire snakes aren't bothered by walls or ceilings at all, but just go straight through them. Whoever coded them apparently only tested them on open flat surfaces.
- I'm not a particularly big fan of how the secret exit of 2-Pyramid is right at the end of the level, since all it does is forces you to replay the exact same level twice in a row.
- The Morton battle doesn't seem to agree very well with your patch for additional fireballs, since spamming them makes random glitchy tiles show up in the background.
- Even looking in Lunar Magic, I can only find two dragon coin flowers in 3-2.
- The POW block kills absolutely everything, including turn block bridges and the tops of the extending pipes. While kind of hilarious, I somewhat doubt this is intentional.
- The 250 time star in 3-6 is kind of unintuitive, since it only teleports you when the timer is at exacly 250, rather than greater than 250 like you would expect. The first time I got there with enough time I thought it was outright broken.
- There seems to be some form of music problem in the sky world map: when exiting a level it first starts playing one song before immediately switching to another.
- After finding the hidden star in 4-house, I'm wondering if being able to get a star and access the star world by simply eating the berries with Yoshi in 2-house is intentional?
- The fourth star world level was really funny and probably the only level where I have seen the Windows graphics utilized well. Dear lord that guy had a lot of Lunar Magic windows open :V Also the antivirus icons for enemies were hilarious, especially the Defender Pokey.
As I mentioned above, due to the semi-mandatory progress pipe in 3-6 outright killing you, my verdict for this is removal. If you fix that, though, even if you ignore the other small things I mentioned, I'll gladly switch that to accepting.
I'd put the difficulty at easy, since other than that pipe I'm fairly certain I only had a single death in the entire hack, and that was due to not following the instructions in the super-speed autoscroll section in that same level.
