Other things that should be replaced (music, graphics, etc)

yeAH YOU LEAVE THAT INVINCIBILITY MUSIC ALONE
Very very very shortly, this drab, workaday world and everything in it will be changed forever! Follow us into the golden country, into the empire of the senseless!
Three things:

- On the overworld, I'd really like the water level tile for Pink 'n' Purple Path to be replaced with a regular one. (as i said in 2010 cough cough)
- Who put the shell in Cactus Cavern's Lava room? I never understood why that ended up there, and it should probably be taken out.
- I'll try and revamp my block and coin graphics.

I'm open to redrawing as much as the artists helping out want to redraw, and then anything that doesn't can simply be replaced by SMWCP2's.

I am willing to redraw enemy sprites and possibly foreground tilesets as well. My Rex from 2010 is kinda ugly by my standards now.
I'm not sure how this is exactly arranged, but I'm willing to help out with drawing fore- and backgrounds where necessary.

That makes me wonder, actually, how the graphics will be done this time around. Are we going for a SMWCP2 approach, in that everything will be custom this time around? That would make for a much more consistent art style, I'd think, but that seems like a lot of work...

As far as I know, there was an 1-UP block near the end of this section and the shell was needed to hit it. It was in the older versions (1.3-1.4?), dunno why it has been removed.

EDIT: But I think removing it is the best idea. This shell makes this section easier and you can kill the pokey-wigglers with it.
Music
- I also dislike the invincibility music despite its subtle reference to our past (if you were here early 2008 when Arbe and his friend spammed meta refreshes to meatspin, you'd know) and I think we should do some kind of remix of the invincibility music, like Metal Mario from SM64 or something entirely custom.
- We should play the hack and review and standardize some things about these ports, like the volumes. Some songs are a lot louder than others. Some songs also sound like complete crap as HOTL said.

Graphics
- I'd like if we tried to stay close to one style this revamp like what's allegedly being done with SMWCP2 so any levels that stick out like a sore thumb, we should consider redrawing or replacing the graphics. I will help match styles.
- Also supporting getting rid of the Reggie Banzai. It's literally Chairman Mao.

Just look above you...
If it's something that can be stopped, then just try to stop it!
Can we also change the name? SMWCP 1.5 just sounds a bit tacky to me honestly. How about something like SMWCP Redux?

1.5 just seems like a version number to me and I left it out of the title entirely and just called it "An SMWCentral Production" - you can post in the title screen thread for any flavor additions to the name and if enough people support it, I might add it.

But... doesn't it feel a bit confusing? There was actually a SMWCP v. 1.5 and people may confuse them with an older version of the original SMWCP.

Someone on the IRC suggested SMW CPR and I thought it was both hilarious and fitting.

(because .. you know, CRP means .. yeah.)

I should have something witty to put here (even if it's just to update dated info), shouldn't I?

Which was something TLMB coined a couple years back and I assumed it just stuck.

As much as the music sucked (I don't know what all your obsession with bad touhou ports is) I'd honestly rather only fix the levels, because that's the only bit that actually makes it unplayable. The graphics and music give you a good feeling of the community, and the SMWCP was never as serious as it's successor.

Honestly, I would like for this to just be the playability testing phase that never was, but that's obviously not going to happen...

I agree that this should be the main focus, at least. The first game just never got the same amount of level QA that the second one did. I guess I don't mind fixing up a few odds and ends along the way, though.

If we get a real soundtrack into this I want to see some actual musical direction by someone. All the previous collaborative soundtracks on this site have just been people spurting out something (me too) without actually getting real in-depth instructions. I think it would be better if we'd get someone to direct the entire thing to make the soundtrack feel more cohesive, just like the art usually got directed (at least in SMWCP2 to my knowledge). I don't know who'd be up for this. I was thinking of SNN, but I don't know how busy he wants to get with this project or if he'd actually want to do something like this. There's a handful of other candidates too.
I've put some thought to it, and I think a soundtrack overhaul might be a bit excessive. Obviously there will be some music changes (likely a bunch because some of these ports are horrid), but I don't know if there will be an entire soundtrack this time.

Still on the fence though. We'll see. I'm worried about sorting out some other stuff regarding levels and bosses first.
Perhaps make it like the VLDC collab and encourage people to make songs for SMWCP and encourage their use in the levels, but not outright require it?

A full soundtrack would be nice, but the sheer, ridiculous hype that occurred at the inception of SMWCP2 isn't present this time around, so a massive influx of submissions probably won't happen.
Regardless of what we decide to do with the cutscenes, Luigi's "Forget 3D television!" line (from the cutscene at the beginning of World 4 where Toadsworth tells the Mario Bros. about Bowser's virtual reality project) definetely needs to go. It's a topical reference that has since lost its meaning.

Regarding the Koopa Beach music from Super Mario Kart, I suggest we replace it with FPI's superior port from The Second Reality Project Reloaded (with a proper opening, of course).

What'd I do this time :>

Anyway, I think instead of outright replacing things, we can do spiritual references or redrawing designs to be better. For example, I would like to suggest that we replace the Reggie banzai bill with a New regular Banzai Bill, but maybe we can have the Banzai with a decal of reggie's face on the side, or just the eyes.

I want this hack to be upgraded and refreshing, but contain real nods to the original. (Which is why I want to just not outright throw out level names+ideas, just redesign the level).
I wonder what a HFD opcode would do in ASM...
Basically, for SMWCP1.5, I'm recommending the same things that I already recommended for SMWCP2 when it started: The game needs unified graphic styles and music. One thing that always killed my motivation in playing SMWCP1 (asside from a lot of way too hardcore levels too early in the game) was everything just not really fitting together. To me that's kinda important, even in a hack. The best (although slowest and probably hardest) solution here of course would be to once again completely redo the graphics and music from scratch for this hack. Don't know how willing people are to do that, though.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
