I've been hacking on and off for the past few years now. I thought of this idea and worked on it for a few days, but it'd be way beyond my capabilities. I was wondering what you guys thought of it and if it was even possible.
The idea is to make a Pokemon game using the Super Mario 64 engine. Impossible, you say? Well, yeah. That's why we're going to take some shortcuts.
First of all, the stars will be replaced by Poke Balls. There will be 151 in all, each representing a different species of Pokemon. (Unfortunately, evolution will be impossible.) The only way Pokemon "battles" would be able to occur is using the Fire Mario patch, like the one used in the final battle of Missing Stars. Separate models would need to be made for those levels in order to preserve the spirit of Pokemon battles.
Most of the "types" can be conquered pretty easily by recoloring the "fire" - purple for poison, yellow for electricity, etc. We'd have to get more creative for, say, rock type. The other problem would be forcing a specific star to be collected
The map layout isn't a challenge. The cities/towns would all be connected by warps just as many other hacks have already done.
I wonder how possible this would be. A lot of the game's core can stay the same (that is, you wouldn't need to write a crap-ton of custom behavior, especially for the player's character). The biggest need, it seems, would be to figure out how to work in the different character models.
