Cutscenes, Script & Plot

So hey, in an attempt to excuse my random two-week disappearance (school, as usual. 8 page paper and 20 minute presentation on something I knew almost literally nothing about), here are three new cutscenes. Fun fact: we've officially passed the 1 bank mark. Other fun fact: I apparently only half-assedly prepared for this--half of my code used JSLs and half of it used JSRs. Turning all of the necessary JSRs into JSLs and adding data bank swapping stuff was super happy fun times.

Also: second cutscene there in ZSNES shows garbage for a single frame. I'm not sure what causes it but if it's only a single frame for an inaccurate emulator I'm not sure if it's worth spending a whole lot of time on.

Also also: Despite having Doc Croc in these cutscenes I haven't had a chance to use the new graphics WhiteYoshiEgg made up yet, so these cutscenes still feature my crayon doodles.

Also @Ladida those new graphics are incredibly awesome. Kudos, and thanks.

Looking awesome as usual Kip. I can't say I wasn't getting a bit worried when you disappeared again for over a week, but glad to see a good chunk of this done.#smw{^_^}

A few of these should actually be pretty damn small in terms of space and time necessary.

- Pre-Battle Boss Jelectro: Not done. Honestly I feel like this cutscene needs a bit of reworking but I'm not sure what to do with it.
- Pre-Battle Hindenbird: Not done. This one scares me because there's a ton of animation going on here and Hindenbird is hell to animate even in the "normal" SMW environment. As a result I'm probably going to end up changing this one a bit as well.
- Pre-Battle Doc Croc: Working on it.
- Pre-Level Norveg: Working on it.
- Pre-Battle Norveg: Not done, but should be pretty easy.
- Post-Battle Norveg/Ending: No script for this yet.
- Pre-Battle Deedle: Not done, but should be pretty easy.
- Post-Battle Deedle: Not done. I honestly don't know how easy or difficult this one will be.

And as for all of these:
- Finale Phase 1
- Finale Phase 2
- Finale Phase 3
- Finale Phase 4
- Finale Phase 5
- Finale Final Cutscene

I'm not 100% sure what we're doing with them. Are we still going with Rameau's script with the dreamer and the abstract floating shapes?

There's also the "Bowser relaxing on the beach" scene. We don't have a script for that either, to the best of my knowledge.

Do we really need an overly elaborate script for the finale, especially for five phases? Can't we condense it into one at the beginning of the level and one at the very end (with the end giving you the password to the ZIP of resources + beta content)?

I was really listing off the ones missing based on what the script file had in place. Condensing the final level to two cutscenes instead of six should do wonders, though.

Mario enters a seemingly empty room only to be met by a giant Jelectro, who tries to swim into. Mario narrowly avoids the boss and the cutscene ends.

A standard cutscene of with Deedles falling off screen, leaving Mario alone in the shot. The sneeze at the end should just blow him away to the side, outside of the shot.



By the way, how is the music in these cutscenes going to be handled? Will it use the assigned stage's music, use the boss music from the getgo, mid-scene transitions, or what?

The scene starts with Bowser relaxing on a beach. Kamek (or a Koopa Troopa if we need gfx space), who is currently sporting a servant tuxedo, walks on to the scene and hands King Koopa a drink, complete with the little umbrella on top.

Kamek: Here's the drink you orderd Your Burliness....
Bowser: I gotta say, the doc was right on this whole vacation thing. Constantly failing on capturing the princess takes a lot out a on guy...
Kamek: Even someone as evil as you sir deserves a break every once and a while.
Bowser: And the view is great! I should build my castle here. (Laughing) No having to worry about capturing the princess, no more bumbling servants constantly failing me, and most important of all, no annoying plumbers like..

(Mario Jumps into the screen and gets into the attack stance)

Bowser: MARIO!!? (Jumps out of his lounge chair knocking Kamek back out of the screen) Why are you bothering me now? Can't a guy even take a simple vacation...

(Mario make some of his classic Mario sounds and gestures with his hands)

Bowser: Factories? I assure you I have nothing to do with that.

(Mario makes sounds and stuff)

Bowser: My minions? Is this what you are making your assumption off of?

(Mario Nods)

Bowser: Well, just because I'm vacation doesn't mean those slackers deserve a break. I lent them off to some guy who offered a heck of a lot of money to borrow them for a while. How else do you think I could afford this vacation?

(Mario talks a bit)

Bowser: You ask a lot of questions. If that guy want to use my minions to build some stupid factories, then I'm ok with it. As long as he doesn't kidnap MY princess, I don't care what he does.

(Mario talks a bit more)

Bowser: What don't you understand? I don't care! (hops back on to his lounge chair) Now get out of here before I blast you with my fire-(Kamek come back on scene)

Kamek: Remember sir, the doc said you need to keep your blood pressure down....

Mario: ...?

Bowser: Hey, being evil is a stressful job, but somebody's got to do it. Now scram mustache, you're blocking my sunlight....

The Bowser graphics were handed over to kip, so they're his to keep. I just hope he looks at my PM at some point.

Credits and Cutscenes in the same day? This is the BEST FUCKING DAY EVER.

While at the moment neither are technically finished, this is a huge step forward. Kip needs to clean up some code and this hopefully should be ready for insertion. I recommend downloading the zip above and taking a look at each cutscene. If something needs to be changed or fixed, let us know now or forever hold your peace.

I can't wait to hear the epic shit Norveg says... Otherwise, the cutscenes are pretty amazing, except Bowser looks funny in the last one when he's standing up. He looks, fat and not so intimidating, which is the opposite of what bowser is.

Yeah, there's some tweaking I'm going to need to do with Bowser. I'll see about getting on that sometime this week.
Now this is a milestone indeed. Great job as always, Kipernal!

Couple of things I tought I'd mention:
- Do the graphics that are missing actually exist and are just waiting for insertion (I know Doc Croc does), or do any of them need to still be drawn?
- Is "what can I do you for" in cutscene 01 an accidental mix-up, or an idiom I never knew of?
- In scene 03, there's no space between the "Hee-hee!" and the "And". I believe I've mentioned this before, so perhaps it's been fixed by now and the version posted here is not the most recent?
- Pretty sure "easiliy" in scene 06 is a legit typo.

Yeah, aside from "easiliy", I noticed a few other typos: "You Don't" in cutscene 03 should be "You don't", "image" and "inhospitible" in 06 should be "imagine" (presumably) and "inhospitable", and "servents" in 13 should be "servants". And was the "what can I do you for" in 01 intentional, or should that have been "what can I do for you"?

Great work, though. I'm assuming the missing graphics simply haven't been inserted (or drawn) yet?
