The 7th Annual VLDC: Overworld Contest (New Deadline: June 15)

Link Thread Closed

Well, I'll give it a try.

Dream team (feed them, please):

I might submit something for this, I like designing overworlds so I'll probably throw something in just for the heck of it, since there's enough time.

I'll probably start working on my entry near the deadline, since I'll be less busy by then.
Are we allowed to change the order of the levels in the worlds (except the worst/best submap of course)? That way I could blend everything into one map much better.

Woo! I like contests like these. I'll definitely give this a shot #tb{:]}
Yep, the levels can be in any order in their corresponding world.
Can I overwrite the palette used by switch palace tile? I'm going to make this coolsauce map.
Depends. The four switch palaces will need to be placed somewhere (this is the overworld designer's responsibility), so if you overwrite the palette on a map/submap where the switch palace is tile is not being used, then that's fine.

Wow this sounds like something I could do. The OW still has to be fully vanilla right? (No YY-CHR nor ASM).

I'd prefer if they were vanilla, but I don't think I'd shoot anyone down for using extra graphics and/or ASM. This was a vanilla level design contest, after all - the map isn't really included in that.

I take it we should keep the custom stuff to a minumum?
Or are we allowed to go all out on this? Or rather than "allowed", would it influence the result in a bad way if we did?
Anime statistic on MyAnimeList:
400 animes completed ✓
6000 episodes completed ✓
100 Days completed ✓
... what even am I doing with my life?
I'm really neutral regarding whether people want to go "all out" or not. On one hand I think it would be nice if the map was vanilla to match the levels, but on the other, we're already using remixes and whatnot, so I don't see any harm in using custom stuff on the map.
I have a couple questions:
(1) Are we aloud to use palette slots 0~3 as long as we don't overwrite the OW boarder?
(2) Do we have to put the levels within the order presented in that list, or can it be randomized? (I'm making it so each of the levels are in their theme locations)

Edit: I should use my eyes next time. #tb{'_'}

^ Both questions were already answered earlier in the thread, just take a look; yes for the first one and yes for randomizing their order.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
well, im not the best in smw rom hacking, but it can't hurt to enter ^-^

EDIT: do we have to worry about the music that plays? Or does that fall on you to arrange?

RE-EDIT: never mind, i saw the other thread :P

i need to pay more attention to things

Could we maybe have various random Yoshi's House-like levels placed as mere fillers to make three branching paths from that level? And do the switch palaces count towards the 82 levels?
Yeah, those Yoshi's House-filler levels would be fine.

And no, the switch palaces don't count as part of the 82.
How would you tell which levels are which level when one of the overworlds are chosen? I happen to make some of the levels reference their own theme, but I'm worried that you (or someone) would put in the wrong level in the wrong tile. Would I have to label each level through an image?

Why not to set the level numbers in the level tiles? I know there are conflicts, but they're relatively few and it should be obvious in almost every case to distinguish which one is which ROM's level.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
Yeah, you can set the level numbers yourself. Once the winner is chosen, I'll personally work with them and ensure that everything is correct and in the order they want it to be.
just finished my entry. feels like a great load has been lifted.

hope i did everything correctly #tb{''}

I finished mine a while ago.

Is the number of submissions going to made public when the deadline passes?
Later.
I don't know if I'm speaking for anyone else, but I could totally use a deadline extension of a week or so.
I never finished my entry because I'm lazy to do, along with lack of motivation.

Also hello, Ladida.
