What kind of world themes do you like?

Forest, Mountain, Island, Ocean (THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!) and Desert!

2. What kind of world themes do you like to combine?

Anything goes, as long as it works!

3. What kind of world themes are you planning to make on your hack?

Medieval Forest, Island, Haunted Shipwreck in the middle of an Icy Ocean... Bottom of the ocean (Not the same ocean!) High Desert, Imperial Palace (Yes, as a world!) Hidden Islets, And the clouds, high in the sky!

As part of my personality I guess, I like order and things that make sense. Having a bunch of worlds that have a specific theme that is somewhat strictly followed tickles my fancy. Ex. Ice world, Lava world, Pipe world, etc.

If I were to combine, I'd have to make it something really neat, as in some kind of Fire and Ice world.

In my hack... which I haven't started planning yet (kinda trying to prepare for the Vanilla contest) I'm going to go for worlds that tell a story through progress. Ex. Great plains -> Mountain's Base -> In the Volcano, etc. For some reason, I just really enjoy the RPG SMW overworld thing, and I think it'll work really well with my idea right now.
1. What kind of world themes do you like? After thinking about this question for a while, I don't really have a favorite. I guess I like any theme that can combine easily with others, if that makes sense. Underground and castle levels mesh really well with any other themes, while I feel that desert levels feel slightly more limited. You can make a typical desert, oasis, pyramid/desert castle... Can't think of much more other than changing the time of day.

2. What kind of world themes do you like to combine? Combine a castle tileset with any other tileset and you got yourself a half-castle half-whatever stage!

3. What kind of world themes are you planning to make on your hack? Although I'm not currently making a SMW hack, I've always wanted to make a carnival-themed world. Examples of stuff you could put: Throwing a shell at a carnival game target to win prizes or progress through the level, enemies balancing on circus balls, bright shiny carnival background with palette-animated lights... I hope I can make that someday. I would also love to make an "evil city" as a final world.

To comment on world themes in general, I like it better when the level theme is expressed in gameplay, and not just graphics. For example, a carnival level with just carnival graphics, and no extra carnival games gimmicks.

On that point, I have no idea how to express a "city" level in gameplay. Shy Guys wearing hardhats and doing construction? Passing cars?
1+2 Especially Caves. The caves can be separated to sub-themes like volcano (cave with lava), frozen (cave with ice), flooded (cave with water), pyramid (cave with desert) pipe maze (self explanatory), mine etc.

3 Sometime I may make a cave themed hack with all mentioned here.

1. My favorite themes are sky (for athletism) and ice worlds (slippery, but not set up in an annoying/unfair way, like 1-tile jumps). I also like fire/lava levels, but I feel a lot of them are just normal caves with lava in bottomless pits. Also, once I had a kind of weird abstract/space/grassland mix; it was set on the edge of Earth, assuming it is flat. Earth at this point is really thin and you can see the other side of bottomless pits. The middle line (on which most earth chunks were axed) was flipping gravity, so you could walk on both surfaces of Earth. Cool beans. It was hard as hell to make a whole world out of that though, so I had to cancel.

2. I'd like combining sky and fire. Like, a sky world that's actually in a solid dark cloud formation caused by a volcano's eruption. It'd have lava pillars and lightning would struck in the background. The antagonist's castle would be sitting on a sharp-cut floating island sitting over said volcano. Epic beans right here. Also, that weird thing I described earlier.

3. I'm taking a unique approach in my hack; there are no worlds, the OW is replaced with a HUB where you enter pipes to access levels and come back after completing it, using the No OW patch and some ASM majjykks. Because when I plan stuff ahead, I always get trouble, like in my example in #1.
Ever since laying my eyes upon the masterpiece that was Freeze/Flame Galaxy from Mario Galaxy, I think combining ice with lava (and other oxymoron-like worlds) are neat little ideas. Those things resonate the best with me. Makes you wonder as you play through the world.
The hack I'm currently working on "Super Mario: The Koopaling's Revenge" has an interesting take on themes. Instead of being planned as generic grassland, generic ice or anything, it is based on themes from retro video games such as Sonic (Sky theme and Carnival theme), Chip 'N Dale (Grassland theme), DKC (Jungle Theme), Duck Tales (Ice Theme), Ninja Gaiden (Desert/Mountain theme), Mega Man X trilogy (Future Theme), etc.

Check my youtube account for videos.

By the way this is post 600
Check my page http://marioepicjourney.blogspot.com to find more updates about my hack Super Mario: The Epic Journey.
Here's how I plan to make my hack:
World 1: Grassland levels eventually transitioning to water levels.
World 2: Island and water levels.
World 3: Back to grassland, but with a different set of enemies.
World 4: Jungle levels eventually going up a mountain.
World 5: More mountain, but with an ice theme.
World 6: Fire and Desert themed levels.
World 7: Sky themed levels, and eventually dark themed sky levels.
World 8: No consistent theme. Each level has a different theme. One grassland level, one water level, one ice level, etc.
don't click this link...
1. I like cave, snow and desert levels, because in hacks I usually see good level design in them.

2. Like Master Lakitu said, caves can be combined with a lot of stuff.

3. In my latest hack, "A Shroomy Tale: Islands of the Stars", my plan for world themes are:

World 1: Grassland/water, but mostly grassland
World 2: Desert world.
World 3: Spooky forest.
World 4: Snowy world.
World 5: Cave/lava.
World 6: Mountain/Sky.
World 7: Islands/water.
World 8: Factory.
World S: W1-7 mashup.
I don't even know what I'm actually doing anymore... will I ever finish a hack?
1. What kind of world themes do you like?

I'm indifferent as long as there are good levels within that world. That said, I tend to quite like Ice levels and Ruins/Cave levels the most. I feel those themes tend to spark the most variety and interesting level design.

2. What kind of world themes do you like to combine?

I don't like combining many themes as it would get a little outlandish, but I do like combining other themes with castles and caves. As an example, one of the levels in my hack is a cave with a lot of water elements in (layer two 'bubbles' which you can swim in).

3. What kind of world themes are you planning to make on your hack?
My hack doesn't really have world themes, but different regions which encompass a lot of themes in them. Each 'region' may have a specific theme to it, but the levels themselves are varied. For example the first world, despite technically being grasslands, also offers a water cave, a rocky level and an athletic sky-like level. Think a slightly less-varied Super Mario 3D World.
Whole lot going on here, but I'll be brief. Nobody likes a wall of text.

1)
I like volcanic, cave, desert and SPACE!

2)
I believe the only combination I've ever made was Space Station, and Grassland.

3)
Oh boy, I have a ton of world ideas, but one such one would be a desolate time forgotten zone- Oop, too many spoilers.
1 --
I like themes that are unusual and don't get used often. For example having a world themed after a house. Every level playing in one of the rooms and within that level it must represent where you are.

2 --
Sweets and volcanoes and water.

3 --
I want to do a main theme in my hack after silver land EP1 and that's seasons.

[Themes that I enjoy] Something unique. We've all seen the themes from SMB3 and World. Besides that, I'm partial to mountain, either for the visuals or the vertical level design that the theme seems to entail. Seriously, guys! Make more vertical levels!

[Mixed Themes] I like themes which mix a physical element (such as grass) and something more abstract (such as time)

[Themes in my hack] Only just about to start world 1, but it's a grass/sky/ruin mix. Basically, floating islands with some pillars and bricks here and there when appropriate. The boss level is totally going to have to be an epic floating castle. *coughMiyazakicough*
Other than that, I'm thinking a subterranean world, not sure on the secondary theme. Probably mines/gems, as a lot of things ([?] blocks, coins, etc) are made of gemstones. Have to come from somewhere, right?

Tower of Disarray

5/?? levels done
-HAHA Oh jeez-
An 'A' press is an 'A' press

Hella neat layout by Erik557
I like when the theme order isn't the same as most Mario games have, but I also like worlds with no distinct theme.
Also, I sometimes like theme clashes (such as a water level in a volcano), but there's a fine line between doing and overdoing...
I really need a layout. :<
isn't there a smw hack with world 3 as ruins thats works in progress and the submap of the world was some dark bluish palette i think i forgot name of hack
I want to bump a thread also
The power of the switch you have pressed will turn ◻ into ◼. Your progress will also be saved.

Ask here. There can be a chance someone knows the name of the hack, and can provide a link to it for you.

Then post something relevant to the thread rather than bumping it like a weirdo that wants postcount++.
ok thanks
I'm trying to use a DKC-esque design scheme in my hack. Each world has a distinct theme (grass world, forest world, cave world, etc.) but only two or three levels actually fit in with the theme of the world. For example, the forest world may only have two regular forest levels, while the others may include cave, bramble, and treetop levels.

SMW actually does this to an extent, however, although those levels generally feel more generic than levels from the DKC series.

My favourite themes are water, ice, snow, winter but most of all i like Christmas themed levels and a few of rainbow:D
