Cutscenes, Script & Plot

Interesting; I've always thought of it the other way round.

Thanks for the feedback, guys, I'll take it into account. Might redo the front view entirely since that's the one I'm less satisfied with.

Kip you have anything new to show us by chance?

Still working on Doc Croc!

Specifically, I redid the front view and tried my hand at the "looking away" and "embarrassed" poses. Not fully content with the latter - I'll retry tomorrow - but it will do I suppose.

As far as I'm aware, that only leaves the propeller hat and the floating pose to be done. yay~

I actually am content with the looking away and embarressed poses. Looks really good!

I have to ask: Doc croc's speaking poses when facing sideways...why are there 2 of them? Aren't they really the same thing? Because they look exactly the same. (I'm not being very clear but I hope you understand.)

The two pairs of mouth tiles you mean? The lower one's for when he's smiling. It's only a few pixels shifted around (and not all that noticeable in this spritesheet), but it does make a difference in-game.

Oh, I see. That does make sense. Keep up the good work. *Pats WYE on the back*

...I wonder if Kipernal is still working on the cutscenes, he hasn't posted in a long time in this forum.

Its looking really good WYE. Excellent job.

I PM'ed Kip about a week or so ago and haven't heard anything back yet :/

As far as I'm concerned, the Doc is finished now. The most recent frames are kind of rushed, but I suppose no one but me will notice, and they're in a perfectly usable state either way.

.bin file - palette - preview for the lazy

Sorry, I actually have a huge PM backlog from my recent scattered absences that I've been putting off. It's a really bad habit that I need to kick.

Anyway, I don't have anything new, unfortunately, though I absolutely haven't forgotten about this. It's just that it's really super time-consuming and lately between school and work I just haven't had any to give.

Also, Doc looks amazing. Great work as always!
I should get a new layout.

Probably won't, though.

I know you have amk and all to worry about, but um....yeah..

Barker duck finally animated.

I think I mentioned somewhere before that that minor fish in cutscene 1 was technically the most complicated actor in the game--now it's this duck at almost 1000 lines of code (the fish was barely 400, and Mario himself now is only at 600). Thankfully none of the remaining cutscenes are anywhere near as animation-heavy as this one was.

Also, if anyone wants to create new versions of some of Mario's graphics that I "drew" (for example, changing Mario's "angry" pose to just a simple "Imma gonna get you sucker" from my unintentional "I'm going to break your neck and bathe in your blood"), that'd probably be for the best.

Awesome--thanks. Sorry I didn't end up using the "bored" pose--I couldn't find any good way to have the duck hold Luigi above his head when his arms aren't anywhere near long enough, so I had to go with something completely different.

Did the name change at some point? To my knowledge it was always Hindenbird. It even says so in the script.

EDIT: Fixed a minor bug in the cutscene. The duck was spinning his cane at the start of the cutscene when he wasn't supposed to be for some reason.

It's pretty good so far, but my complaint is that you completely changed the cutscene, and I don't like this version of the cutscene. I liked the old one better where Luigi begs Mario to let him be the one to wager, and the player is given an option to choose a barrel.

Plus, the Barker Duck could use some different graphics.

Something like this, perhaps?

Thank you for reminding me actually, those gfx were suppose to replace the other ones. I'll have to talk to Ladida about making a few more frames for you

At this point, yeah no I don't think there's any reason to bother changing this cutscene.

The changes I made actually did have reasons behind them:

The player doesn't choose the barrel because the cutscene system requires linearity--it can't branch and do different things depending on input from the player. I could change it but it would require a lot of work and I didn't think it was worth it for one cutscene. Therefore I modified the scene slightly--the barrels are shuffled so slowly and so obviously that there's no way anyone could accidentally pick the wrong barrel (which Mario even "comments" on with his visible silence). Thus there is no need to have the player choose anyway.

The change for Luigi begging Mario to let him be auctioned off I changed mostly at my own discretion. The Mario series may not be known for its highly developed characters, but the brothers do have some personality, and that scene, for as much as I do love it, was a pretty direct violation of it. Mario would never agree to bet his brother and Luigi has never shown any dissatisfaction with being the younger brother*. Maybe it's just me but it made the whole bit feel sort of...fanfiction-y. I tried to reinvision the scene in a way that, say, a Paper Mario game or a Mario & Luigi game might have animated it, while still keeping as close to Rameau's original ideas as possible. Were he still around I would've gone over the changes with him first, but he hasn't been seen in almost a year.

Though that being said I do my best not to change Norveg and Co.'s dialog too much, since they don't have an established character to go against. Or rather, Rameau's script is their established character. And since this is the last scene with Luigi in it anyway, there probably won't be any more large script changes like that.

*Look at me. I'm arguing about the personalities and motives of the Mario Brothers. Now I feel like the fanfiction writer...

Ah, I missed those. I'll reanimate him to make use of these new graphics, though it might take some time. As I said this duck is pretty much the most complicated actor in the entire game right now.

Actually, since this guy's graphics are a bit more human-shaped, I might be able to make it so that he's holding the completely stoic Luigi above his head instead as the original script had it. I'll see what I can do.

ok, lol'd up some more frames for duckdude at litevein's insistance <-- actually this is pretty much true :P
