Replacing Mario

I have this grandscale master plan for my hack that it would be better off without Mario. Instead I would prefer a character with different (and simpler) physics, kind of like how X controls in Mega Man X (basically I want to remove the acceleration).

What I'm wondering is what would the best way of doing this be? I'm guessing it would be easier to hide Mario and have a custom sprite coded from scratch be the player, but how would I do this?

(sorry for kind of wall of text)

allow shy guy emojis in post footers you cowards!

hide mario? you would set the bits in $78.

the best method would be to just simply edit the existing physics. there should be enough ROM map entries to help with that. then its just a matter of editing the tilemap and w/e. no need for haxy workarounds like a custom sprite replacing mario; save that for 1-level changes.

I don't know if you've ever really messed with Mario's physics, but they are pretty much spread out into seemingly random places, making them extremely hard to mess with.

Then again, we only kind of understand how Mario's interaction and stuff works, so total replacement wouldn't work so well, either...

Dumb game...
