note: read note at bottom of post
First things first, the title literally translates to "Super Mario the Nightmare Idiot" (or alternatively, "Super Mario the Idiotic Nightmare"). That's about all I'm going to translate, since most of the text is chock-full of slang and barely understandable, even to a fluent French-speaker.
Secondly, what is Mario supposed to be walking on? Did Godzilla take a massive dino-dump all across Dinosaur Land? Is that why Mario is in what appears to be some kind of hell? And what is that number at the bottom supposed to be? A foreign phone number that we can call to complain about the hack? Is it supposed to be a cheat code that reveals the rest of the hack? (Hint: It's not.)
As stated previously, the menu is impossible to see against the background. It also covers up part of the title, but maybe that's a good thing. I don't need to have the word "IDIOT" staring at me all day.
Like I said already, I won't translate it literally, but it basically says "Welcome in the worst of hacks, you should never have taken this good hack, suffer forever! Don't pay attention to the insult!" Yeah, makes a lot of sense, and hypocritical at that.
The level title says "Level for (insert derogatory term here)", which is insulting but it was already stated not to pay attention to that, so disregard that for now. It only gets worse.
The overworld itself is flat and boring, but really not too bad, and if it is indeed supposed to represent a hell of some sort, it's kind of what you'd expect. Probably the best aspect of the entire hack.
(it is at this point during writing that fsvgm777 makes his post.)
Right away starting off the level, the palette of the tree trunks is messed up. Why is one muncher flipped but the other not? Other than that, it doesn't look
too horrible, although I can't imagine there being a blue sky in hell. The ground tiles here actually look rather nice, to be honest.
Since the water surface tile isn't a full tile, it gives the impression that Mario is walking on air. I'm fine with the gimmick itself, but the execution just doesn't work. And why are ON/OFF blocks used? If the sole purpose is to avoid cutoff, there's always the option of ExGFX, which the author is clearly familiar with.
Unless an explanation is given beforehand, there should be no reason for a 3-up moon to kill the player. Even worse, the first moon in the level is real, so in the end it's just a mean trick. And if you're going to make it deadly, why use lava? Why not just use Munchers? It's not like there are any powerups or anything anyway.
It's tolerable with the water, where you either swim or stand, but the indistinguishable difference between life and death here is completely illogical and unnecessary. Trial and error should not be required to beat a level like this, and punishing the player by killing them and making them play through the entire stage (without a midpoint, by the way) all over again is terrible design. And there are multiple instances of this.
Really? Invisible lava? That's even worse. What's more, you only have two safe tiles to make that jump, which isn't easy when
everything kills you in one hit.
---
The last bit is essentially just another death moon and a dead end with another insulting message.
If this isn't a joke hack, then the creator must be one sick "connard". There should be no reason to accept this whatsoever.
(this was written before it was removed. still posting it anyway since i spent over an hour writing it.)
