12 Days Before Christmas Level Design Contest - Discussions

I was thinking of how to do the latest theme and I am next to clueless on how to do it.

That's just what I think of course.

And that's exactly how I think too.

This contest goes a little overboard now. As evilguy said, we don't have that much time, because 12 levels of 8+ screens is at least equivalent to 6 full levels. Many people won't be able to pull off 6 levels in the 3 weeks you gave us, especially of we're going to have to work with themes like this. It's not that I dislike the current themes, and it's certainly not the case that it's impossible to make a good level with it, but I'm worried that this causes the more unexperienced and new hackers to quit this contest. And that's the complete opposite of what we wanted this contest to do.

Oh hey, that's exactly the theme I've been using for all my levels so far :V

Although I'm sort of getting doubts about my abilities to actually finish this. Still eight levels left to go, and the themes seem to be getting more and more complex.

Huh? Wait... am I the only one who uses a different formula here?
Didn't the rules say that a level can have suvblevels with different themes, as long as we respect the screen limit?
Like say I make 3 levels. 1 of them will have 5 themes, the next level 4 themes and the last one 3? Isn't this good, too?
Well, finally a theme that gives me a drawn out idea in my head and not a clusterfuck of possibilities like the SMB theme.

EDIT: That is okay as well, Rykon. Some people just prefer using one theme per level (like me and ycz for example).
I've got a question:

Can you use the same theme twice in the mini-hack if it doesn't outrun the screen maximum?

For example: So let's say the first part of my level is grassland with 8 screens, then there's a city section with 10 screens. The next level has another grassland section with 3 screens and then a dimensional vortex section with 9 screens. So the total amount of grassland section would be 11 screens. Would something like that be allowed?
...that's a very relevant question for me too, actually. I've already used the dimensional vortex theme for 36 screens before it was announced as an official theme; does that mean I've broken the limit and need to redo everything?

No because Aj said that when a level fits two themes you have to select only one of them and make a separate level for the one you didn't choose. You've just made a bunch of levels that fit 2 themes but that weren't your official dimensional vortex level yet :P

to hear birds and see none.
Why does the SMB theme have to be a pain? I'm trying to work with it, yet it's kind of annoying. Is it just me or am I the only one who doesn't like it?
Also, would it hurt to add an additional theme, just in case one doesn't find a way to work with a certain theme?
I,don,t join on this contest.but i,liked.
Me too kid.

Yes, this is allowed.

Also, due to popular demand, I added a second possibility to today's theme. Instead of doing the dimensional vortex, you can also do an alternate dimension. Note that alternate dimension must look like something from outside of this world (play with the palettes a little, add new enemies, and if you can change the physics as well), making a level with Sonic GFX or anything of that kind does not count as "alternate dimension".

That is more doable for me. Thanks :).

"dimention" should be "dimension".

Anyway, I may end up doing something last-minute for this but we'll see how things work out.

Nope your not the only one. This has been the most troubling theme so far for me for the main reason I'm not use to how those games work. I watched a few levels of one of the games and paid attention to how it was designed as well as they gameplay. That could help a lot.

Oh good, then I won't need to start over from scratch. Motivation status: regained.

I too am having trouble with the SMB style one mostly because Aj6666 didn't just ask us to make a level with the graphics of an SMB game but he asked us to make the level design itself like the levels in one of the NES SMB games. My level design style is very different from the level design style of the original SMB games and it's having to mimic someone else's level design style that is taking me outside of my comfort zone I find.

That being said I don't need or want an alternate theme I would rather do my best with the theme given and see what happens even if this particular one is giving me trouble.

I just really have no clue about the smb theme. My design and smb just don't go together and I feel like it's gonna horribly clash with the other levels. Not like I have a choice, though.
Just fancy. An alternative theme appears, in case one can't use the dimensional vortex theme(I made it in a short amount of time), but no alternative theme for the level with the SMB theme?
And if there's gonna be a replacement, then it better not be something similar.
It's gonna be really close for me, as I am on vacation right now, which is why I'll be able to continue working on it at the 27th...#w{=(}
