If you had savestates in real life...

As I am a rather scientific guy, I would assume that loading a savestate would recreate the exact same universe as when the savestate was created, including my brain and therefore my thoughts and memories, so I would be unable to gain any obvious advantage from such an ability.

I would further assume that the universe is fully deterministic, including quantum physics; we don't know the rules, but I do believe they exist. (We will never be able to predict the universe, as a perfect universe-simulator would require more than one particle of memory to represent one simulated particle, alternatively would be identical to its simulation and therefore not be a simulation at all.)

This means that all events between state saving and state loading would be perfectly repeated; including loading the same savestate again. The end result of this would be rendering the universe devoid of any further meaningful activity, and it would be the equivalent of any other universal doomsday device. I don't even know if it's possible to differ between a savestater and an instant universe terminator.

Alternatively, if my assumption of determinism is false, and the many-worlds interpretation is true as well, it is possible that many, or even most, of the alternate universa(*) have ended already, and we're really damn lucky, but that's implausible. Instead, it is more likely that many of our clones may have ended already, and we're here just because we're still here. It's the same reason we live on the only known inhabited planet - the others are uninhabited, therefore we're somewhere else.

To return to the original question, a rewinder may bring useful benefits to me, even if many-worlds is false, assuming the universe is not deterministic. Since the quantum phenomena will go differently, the world will not be identical to last time; however, I must very carefully set the rewind time, as if I set it too short, I will redo it forever (I won't know how many times I've done it, so I won't tire of it), and if I set it too long, I (as well as the rewinder) will cease to exist.

So the short answer is: If I had savestates in real life, we would know a whole lot more about the universe; however, I would be unlikely to use it, as destroying the universe is unlikely to yield any desirable effect in any eventual afterlife I may end up in, if any.

* Isn't 'universa' an oxymoron, anyways?

But what if you could retain memories of the version of reality that was rewritten? What if this power allows you to see all the multiple timestreams, and remember all of them even after you loaded state?

The implication of such a thing would be that if I, on average, replay every second once (plus the 'playthrough' I keep), I (or at least my brain) would age twice as fast as everyone else, and that would just lead to getting Alzheimer's at the age of 40.

On a shorter term, it'd probably blow up various biological processes due to the brain having an incorrect picture of the body, with various undesirable results.

Additionally, due to the Earth's rotation, my brain would likely be reloaded with a different speed than that of my skull, which would also be quite undesirable. (The Earth's orbit is neglible compared to the Earth's rotation, as it changes very slowly compared to the Earth's rotation. Compensating for all applicable orbits is pointless, as it is easier to measure any speed difference between my brain and skull.)

Alternatively, if it saves and reloads my entire body, I'd get all applicable age-related diseases at a far too young age, not just brain-related issues. The movement of the Earth would also still be relevant, though with slightly higher tolerance for calculation errors.

On the other hand, I would gain the ability to clone items by saving a state with them far off, and loading with them nearby (possibly after swallowing them, or some even more obscure maneouver). There is no possible way to define exactly when it starts being part of my body; you'll either blow up the digestive system due to mismatch between observed and actual contents, or allow trivial cloning of items.

If I had savestates in real life...(I really don't wanna say this, but...)

I'd savestate right now and then wait until Christmas time and see if I get a 3DS/2DS. Then i'd load a state and try anything to prevent me from getting one.

I'd also save a state when I am about to eat my favorite foods/candy/etc, then when i'm done eating, I load the state so I can eat them again and again.
Just so you know, I'm very active on the site anymore like I was before; I'm mainly on Discord now.

Damn, you're right. Trivial cloning is out of the question due to the First Law of Thermodynamics. In fact, the ability to savestate in real life requires causality to break down, and that can have dire consequences.

Go onto a game show like Who wants to be a Millionaire or Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader and make a savestate after every question, and reload them after getting a question wrong. (The 2 shows are only multiple answers)

Million dollar prize, baby!:O

1.Save State

2.Slap

3.Load State

4.Repeat
I'd use it to solve my mistake.
EDIT: I'm Napalm Man now!
I'll use it before writing/ typing for corrections if I say/write something stupid

Read my posted story here!!.

The Best Hack EVAR!!:

This layout good as my stories is made by Kagami

What about "Jeopardy!"?

1) Savestate at beginning of the day
2) See what happens
3) Load
4) Screw with everyone's heads by predicting what they're going to say
5) ?
6) Profit
I would repair/re-try something terrible that could happen seconds later.
Save state, die, go to heaven/hell, load state, tell everyone what heaven/hell was like.
Want progress on 100 Rooms of Enemies: The Nightmare Edition? Go here to see.

(rip my other userbars momentarily)

1) Savestate
2) Make SMW hack
3) Wait for epic TASer of winning to break it horribly
4) Loadstate
5) Fix all of the breaks
6) Release hack again (or was it for the first time?)
7) Smirk when nobody can break it.
I would use it to
1. Win the lottery like the greedy fuck I am
2. Use it in situations where I could easily do something I wouldn't normally do for various reason (it'd get me in trouble, etc) and I would use my save stating ability to see what would happen if I did things out of the ordinary and reload when they went wrong.

Screw savestating in real life, rewinding is 100% more effective!
My blog. I could post stuff now and then

My Assembly for the SNES tutorial (it's actually finished now!)
I can revive my best moments.

Agreed. Because what if you accidentally savestate after doing something embarrassing and can't go back?
^ Use slowdown x30 until something works.
(and rewind a zillion times to the overworld and make a backup in case the slowdown fails)
Usually inactive/procrastinating on a hack idea.

I also agree. There should be a "If you had rewinds in real life" thread too.

Nope, this thread should be called "If you had savestates or rewind in real life".
