LadiesMan217's Help Thread (MIDI help)

Fanatical like a Demon
This is a thread I'm going to create for my problems in my project so I don't have to make thousands of threads. Well, here my first problem. I have a brr sample that's really big that it won't let me insert it in AMK because of the ARAM size it exceeds. I had to erase a lot of important(!) samples to make it fit, problem is, now my SFX sounds crappy. Are there any other suggestions, preferably something I can tweak to change the brr's size or length so it won't take up so much space? I've already tried lowering $xx with the $f1 command but it didn't work (I'm also trying to avoid that because I don't want to change how the music sounds). Here's the sample if anyone can help me. Here's the spc too. The brr is 30(duh #ab{:LOL:}).

Are you using #optimized? If that still gives you ARAM errors, try replacing your Addmusic_sample groups.txt with this one and use #optimized2 instead.

Thanks! It worked beautifully!

You can try multiplying your tunning values by 2, and lower the octave of that channel by 1. For example, if your tunning looks like this:

"asdf.brr" $ff $e0 $00 $04 $50

Or, in case you aren't using custom instruments (you should, though, as it saves insert size, and it's overall easier to work with while tunning):

$f3 $20 $04 $ee $50

Then, if you multiply your values by 2 (using the Windows calculator in programmer mode), they will look like this:

"asdf.brr" $ff $e0 $00 $08 $a0

Or:

$f3 $20 $08 $ee $a0

Then you change your o5 to o4 and it should work, though you may want to tweak the $ee tunning a little bit (assuming you're using that tunning method), since it works kinda different than the submultiplier of the custom instruments.

*smack* HOW COULD I HAVE FORGOTTEN ABOUT $F3?!?! Thanks Masterlink #ab{^^;;;}. Next problem, can someone please help me out as to why this sounds like this? Is it because of the truncated ticks? I'm trying to rip the last few SMW songs so AMK can have them in the next update.

Yea, others the seem to be having the same problem is Cast List, and Bowser Zoom Out. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with those truncated ticks, but I don't know what to do...

Well I managed to fix the Bowser Zoom Out, but the others are different as they have more error areas, where as Bowser Zoom Out only had 1. Is there anyone that can take these and fix them for me? In particular one with a lot of music experience that can tell me what was wrong and give me advice as to how prevent this in the future?

Did you used AddmusicK or Addmusic 4? Samples .brr or .bnk?

I'm working on porting the Super Mario All Stars Soundtrack, and all was going well until I got to the SMB2 songs. I use nintspc to get texts out of games that work, and if I can't get a text, then I work on with the midi it produces. Well, problem is, only 6 songs converted, but the rest didn't. I'm sorta okay with no text output (would REALLY prefer it though), but not even an midi comes out, instead I get a text AND midi with the Player Select theme. Why doesn't nintspc output the correct info on the spc's? I understand it can't dump sfx because the song's in the BG, but why these? Can someone please help out? Maybe fixed spc's? I've downloaded 2 different spc soundtracks online and its those same songs.

EDIT: The SMB/TLL & SMB3 songs work perfectly.

You have to keep in mind that NintSPC isn't finished, so it might have those kind of incompatibilities/bugs, and they may remain like that for a long time.

I'm afraid you'll have to make your own midis/download them from vgmusic.com and port them by yourself.

That's what I was afraid, man, there goes the on spot perfection with the Soundtrack. So after about 20 something plus hours of dedication, here's (my FIRST port EVER from scratch) the port of the SMB2 Overworld. What I need help with is the separation of intro and continuous loop of the song. It does it right the 1st time but the 2nd time it just explodes with all channels, I think it may be channel 8, I don't know, can someone please help me with this, I'll pm you the text for who ever offers, please.

Don't know if it helps any, but I ripped my own SPC of SMB2's overworld in Snes9x and was able to get a proper midi out of it. I got a .txt as well, but Addmusic Player just keeps looping the first few seconds over and over again so I can't really comment on that. :P Seeing as you've already spent

on your port this news may piss you off more than actually be helpful, so sorry I guess. But it may help with the rest of the songs though.

I don't really know enough about this stuff to really help, sorry.

That answers the question I was just about to ask, thank you for bringing it up at the time. So setting custom instruments over using the $f3 command DOES decrease insert size. Can I use the h command to help tune the instruments while setting them up like:

"asdf.brr" h0 $7f $e0 $00 $08 $a0

instead of:

h0 $ed $7f $e0 $f3 $(sample#) $08 $ee $a0?

It'd really help so I won't have to retune every sample.

That will make AMK throw an error, but you can use the h command once you call the custom instrument, like this:

#instruments
{
"asdf.brr" $ff $e0 $00 $08 $a0
}

#0 @30 hX

Also, for the first byte of custom instruments you have to add 80 to get the correct value, so $7F will be $FF, $6F → $EF and so on. There is more info about this in AMK's readme.
Fanatical like a Demon
So the list of the custom instruments's number starts at 30? I've read the readme countless times but it doesn't directly state how to set up the instrument's number, so I'm assuming 30 is the first like so:
#instruments
{
"sample1.brr" $aa $bb $cc $dd $ee ;this would be @30
"sample2.brr" $aa $bb $cc $dd $ee ;this would be @31
}
right?

I have another question for my Yoshi's Island Soundtrack. Are there any samples that Yoshis Island has that are presents in SMW? I know it has samples 00, 01, and 02. Is SMW's snare(0B) and harp(0C) the same as YI's? Also, from experience I've noticed that in SMAS, it doesn't use instruments but instead uses multiple samples that are the same but with different ADSR values. Example, SMAS has samples 08 and 09 which is the equivalent of SMW's @22 & @23 (sample 06). Does YI do this? Because I don't want to waste people's rom space when I release this. Sorry for the attack of questions but I REALLY need a music veteran's help here.

Forget the last post because this one's bugging me more. So I know that SMAS has 3 samples not found in SMW: 17, 19, and 20. imamelia said there is also sample 06 but I found that SMW's 04 sounds similar and for the most part it worked until some songs that use it in more than one channel appeared (and Torchkas also said SMAS's 06 was different than SMW's 04). Are there any more samples in SMW not found in SMW because some sound SO SIMILAR. So far I've been using MidiGuy's Soundtrack as reference for samples, but then again, some samples that I thought were the same weren't.

I'm using Kipernal's MML Editing Tool and every time I try use the label loop, I get an error saying: An error has occurred. System may be busy or melting into slag. Or you forgot to close a loop; that would also do it.

I've never had problem with this until now, it's a simple highlight of a line and it says there's 2, ctrl+l, boom error.
