Pick-A-Pack: Discussion Thread [Extension requests granted: Nov. 17 enddate.]

Pick-a-Pack Contest

What is this contest?
Basically, this is a level design contest with a twist: When you sign up, you must declare a number between one through seven. This number, after the sign-up period has concluded, will determine the pack of supplies that you must use within your level, each pack containing two blocks and two sprites. These packs were made by using a randomizer to pick two from many of the resources availiable on http://smwcentral.net for both categories. What the result was were some very interesting combinations that usually would probably never be in the same level. This will require a good amount of creativity for many people.

What are the rules and regulations?
1. You must sign up during the sign-up period in order to participate, along with your pack number. This was explained in the previous paragraph.
2. Up to one partner is allowed for the contest. Specify this person when you sign up, and have them also confirm it in their post.
3. You must design your level using every resource of your pack in some way.
4. You can only be involved in one single contest entry.
5. If you absolutely cannot design with the objects in your pack, you may request to be assigned a different pack for a ten point deduction. I would advise against this heavily, but it's an option availiable to you.
6. You may modify the objects in your pack, but they must function very similarly. Log all of your changes to any and every item, and submit with your final entry.
7. Kaizo levels are not acceptable.
8. Have fun with it! Enjoy and exhibit your creative thinking!

The Official Rubric
Levels will be judged on the the following categories, out of 100 possible points.

Gameplay: 70 points
Was your level flat and boring? Was it over-complex?
Was the length short, long, or moderate? Did the level take two seconds to complete, or two hours?
Was the difficulty curve organized or scattered? Was your level fair?
Did your level contain good and purposeful flow, or did your level give off a "mish-mash" feel?

Technical: 20 points
Did your level have bugs?
Did everything custom work as intended?

Aesthetics: 10 points
Was the palette of your level nice and pleasing to look at, or harsh on the eyes?
Did your level go extremely overboard with decoration? On the flip-side, was there even any decoration at all?

What are the deadlines?
The sign-up period will end October 11th, midnight EST.The design and submission period will be released afterwards.

Each pack contains some custom resources that must be used within your level.

Edit: Can we use custom graphics?

Yes. You can use custom graphics, or stick with the possibly more familiar style of SMW.

So, with this, I hope you sign up and have a great time. This is something I plan and will necessitate the finish of. Thank you for your time!
