President Obama resorts to Congress about Syria

Despite my hatred of politics, this chemical warfare attack is scary. Obama wishes to have Congress vote on whether or not to deal with Syria after Britain backs out because "they must not go unpunished". I still think this may not go as planned...

I'm very glad Obama is going to Congress - sidestepping the checks and balances would have been a poor idea, to say the least.

As for Syria itself - I don't know. Obviously gassing your own people is an utterly terrible thing, but I don't know if this is our place to be in. Hmm.

To say the least x10. I think its silly how many people thought this might happen

What sucks is we get criticized no matter what we do. People in syria and even other places were pissed at the US for not stepping already, and that was 1 week ago. But if we do, most of America is pissed. I wonder what the reaction would be if this was happening in Canada or Mexico

Yeah, so what if I haven't shoveled out my signature yet, I'll get to it later.

Yeah, it does seem to go that way. Step in, and we're the bullies. Don't step in, and we're heartless. Ah, well.

Probably much the same, sadly.

I think more people would be ok with helping neighbors that we have a pretty good relationship with(ok maybe just canada) rather than syria.

I really don't know what to think of Obama waiting for the congress.
I'm no good with politics and I don't live in America, so the result won't effect me, however...

I do think someone has to stop that megalomaniac person calling himself "leader".
Hiding weapons and military arsenal in schools and univereties, using the innocent people as protection and still claiming to be able to defend against America and having been victoriois already for Obama waiting for a congress decision. That man's nuts

To put it simply, if he took action without congressional approval, it would be bad.

The problem with intervening in Syria is many of the rebels are either Al-Qaeda affiliated or have some other reactionary Islamic affiliation who want to infuse Islamic law into a future Syrian state.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-23139784 just check out this story about a boy who worked at a coffee cart run by his family and when someone asked him for a free cup of coffee he jokingly replied "Not even if the Prophet himself returns" for which he was soon after murdered in the street for blasphemy.

Then let's not forget the Syrian Rebel who was video taped eating a mans heart WARNING: this one is graphic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4wcuvhLDXo

Do you really think the USA ought to be picking sides in a conflict like this where there really are no good guys?

Also don't forget the Islamic takeover of Mali was largely possible due to the fact that when Muammar Gaddafi fell the Islamist elements within that rebellion were able to help themselves to Gaddafi's armories. So I'd think twice about making a similar mistake in Syria.

As I said, I'm not good with politics. And as you said, both sides are "evil" and no good.
This is a situation where no one can win. But even so, you'd have to deside for the "less evil".
I know that neither Obama (nor anyone else) can act in a way, to bring this to a good end.

“What do you do when there is an evil you cannot defeat by just means? Do you stain your hands with evil to destroy evil? Or do you remain steadfastly just and righteous even if it means surrendering to evil?”
This line is from an Anime, so what... it's still meaningfull to me

Back on topic though, I think I've heard in the news that Britain might just asist Obama after all.

This is a global struggle against Islamic fascism it effects so much more than the lives of just Americans. In the example I gave above of Al Qaeda using weapons stolen after the fall of Gaddafi it was Mali that suffered the unintended consequences of toppling that regime. As well as neighboring Algeria remember the gas plant hostage taking?

This is a no-win situation for the US when it comes to any form of military intervention. While Assad is a cruel dictator who murders his own people, those leading the opposition are not to be trusted either. Further destabilization of that reason would be nothing but bad news for those in the US. However I am glad the president is following proper procedure with this situation by asking congressional approval on any intervention in Syria. Hopefully Congress will make the decision that is best for this country and avoid any conflict in Syria

Sorry if this is a bump, but I'd like to add my opinion.

I agree, this is a no-win situation. Obama first threatened action against Assad, when no one else wanted to because Assad's threatened to attack the rest of the Middle East if they do. There's one loss. Then Obama decided "No, I won't attack, I'll go ask Congress's approval first, BUT HEY, YOU TAKE AS LONG AS YOU NEED, CONGRESS. NO RUSH." Now he's a coward to everyone.

My parents always say, thanks to Obama, the US is now the laughingstock of the world. This? This is why. Obama's not doing the right thing, he's doing all the wrong things. Probably on purpose, too...

As for Syria, I do feel that someone needs to step in and stop the guy, especially since there's reports that they bombed Lebanon (or wherever it was) with sarin gas last month. The only problem is, thanks to his threat, any action against him will probably lead to World War 3. (The fact that Russia wants to arm Iran doesn't help that.)

I still have no idea whether this is a good idea, or whether or not I even really care. I agree with you, Riolu180 - this is making the US seem like the dumbest country on the planet. I mean, for love of god, WHY WOULD YOU JUST ANNOUNCE THIS, THEN GO OFF GOLFING?!?! Who the hell runs a country like this? Apparently Obama.

This isn't politics. This is just flat out tactics in general. Even Republicans are frequently guilty of this.#smw{>:|}

of all the thing Obama has done, he probably did more to improve US reputation than any president from the last decade. They were a seriously strong anti-american sentiment in Quebec(you couldn't find anything that portrayed america and american in a positive light, it was alway a fat, greedy moron). Mostly due to the extremely right-wing policy, it made america look like of bunch of selfish hypocrites. Even the simple improvement (like the affordable care act) that Obama did and how it was handled (it told the whole world that america wanted to change) did wonder for the reputation of the US. He's not the best president you had, but he is the one you need right now.

Are you guy seriously advocating that Obama just recklessly attack Syria without seeking approval? That sound like a terrible idea to preserve the reputation of america and will make him look more like a bloodthristy tyrant.
Let's just call it a time and stop posting in this thread. It's old news. And it's starting to look like the post above me is just begging for a flame war. Also yeah we're kinda making enemy's of our ally's and (trying to) make ally's of our enemy's (what's the plural of "enemy" and "ally"?).
it's enemies and allies

A considerably less impressive thing to say when you recognize that there have been 2 presidents in the last decade.
I meant to say that he did a better job at making the US look good than Bush and Clinton.

(now that I think about it, that was very poorly worded)
