I got a complaint, which I will appreciate if someone understands. Gooey is taking up basic emoticons! The problems?

1.) This is not a Kirby site.

2.) People prefer the textual style of emoticons, since people are more used to them.

3.) They look absolutely silly.

I dunno if other people complained about this, but it annoys me when I wanna make emotes. At least change them to generic ball faces maybe? Gooey is out of place....
kieran's personal preferences > any other decisions

though if it bothers you then you can add:

Code
header: <div class="filter-noemote">

footer: </div>

should disable all emotes within post
I like the gooey emoticons but I guess it is all up to opinion. I thought clicking 'Insert Emoticons' and selecting the one you would like to use but I guess I am wrong. It would be nice to have the AcmlmBoard emoticons as default.
Uh

We do? I happen to like image emoticons, and one can assume most people don't mind them since this is the first complaint of this sort I've seen.

But, more importantly:

Try this.

There are a lot of emoticons beyond Gooey.#ab{:D} Many of them look nicer than Gooey.

3. If you and others don't like image emoticons, just make a non-parsed text-based one. :~|)
I've always thought the idea of having Gooey as the "default" emoticons was kind of silly, but back then, they were the only ones we had. I'd actually love the see the Acmlm's smileys made into the default, if only to pull my nostalgic 2005-2007 heartstrings.
The main thing I dislike with them is how often they appear in inappropriate contexts.

That's true Alcaro. I've got also an idea: The HTML tag for the Gooey emoticon
Code
:)

schould be now so:
Code
#g{:)}

It's so o.k.?
There's the problem of existing ones breaking. #thp{:s}
But would it really matter that much? #thp{=D}

Who cares about a Gooey becoming text, it's not like we'll get random trash like #smw{9.9} anywhere.

I'm rather used to the Gooey ones. If you don't want them to display, it doesn't take too much effort to put a bold tag or something inside it.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?

This has come up in the past a bunch but it never really gets changed. Personally I think the default should just be text, i've always been a fan of text emoticons. The image ones are good too though.

It would be cool to have an option where each user can set their own default emoticon set, so typing ":)" could be gooey for some, acmlm, text, or whatever. Sorta similar to how we change our default level up icon thingys. (That is the technical term IIRC)

Yeah, so what if I haven't shoveled out my signature yet, I'll get to it later.

Have never been much of a fan of the gooeys (especially back when I was in music and pasting lines of mml). I've always wanted to see them changed but never felt it was relevant enough to bring up. At least if anything, make them less relevant to Kirby.

Tip:
I prefer the text version myself, but a user option to choose which is your default when typing ':)' or any other would be very nice.
(none, Gooey, WYE, AcmlmBoard [I like this the best], ...etc)
The default you choose would be on that user's end, not what displays per user basis. Although that too is a possibility.

^This. We have ranksets, how hard would this be to implement?

if you have a preference as to which emoticon you want to use in your post, then just use it? why would you need a default option really?
The only problem I have with Gooey emoticons and most other emoticon sets on this site is the way it spaces out your text:

Hello! I'm plaintext!
Text on top is spaced :D
Goodbye everyone.

Compare with Acmlm:

Hello! I'm plaintext!
Text on top is not spaced #ab{:D}
Goodbye everyone.

I guess this is because of the smaller size of Acmlm emoticons.

Yea that's the problem and main point of this thread:
You can't use text emotes without a bit of trickery new users don't know about because Gooey replaces them.

No, that's not what he was saying. He's asking why people really need a default option for emoticons when there is a drop-down menu right in the post creation box that lets people pick whatever emoticon they want.

I could see the value of a default emoticon option if we had a lot more than just six different types of emoticons (no, the Lunar Magic icons do not count as emoticons#lm{owl2evn}). Until we get more choices, the onus should be on the user to figure out which emoticons he wants to use and when (including text emoticons).

And please don't tell me new users are going to miss the giant happy-face symbol in the post editing tray that lets them pick emoticons (and funny you would mention new users, too, as they're the least likely to complain about Gooey replacing their text emoticons).
