General SMBX Help Thread

Is it possible to make an NPC walk/move using events? As in, is there a way to make one of the Toads walk to the right once you talk to them?

Thanks.

If you managed to make talking trigger an event (or you can screw with it to activate you hitting something or another), you can do this:

1) Set the Toad on its own layer.
2) After the trigger, destroy the layer the Toad is on.
3) Have a hidden layer with a Toad that moves right.
4) Have the second layer appear when the first layer is destroyed.

That should work, though I haven't tried it. That's pretty much what The Invasion 2 does for switching messages after player does something.

I (as well as at least one other person I've been talking to) have been having issues with the editor randomly freezing every few minutes. Closing every single other open program helps somewhat but it still happens. Does anyone have any idea why this happens or how you can fix it?

Words.

That has been happening with me as well. It is so annoying! I'm using Windows 7 64bit if that helps.
So, uh... I thought I had figured out events (the settings are pretty straightforward), but it turns out I don't know how to actually activate one.
Precisely I want my event to fire when the player touches a certain layer, though knowledge on how to otherwise activate events would also be great to have.

(And yeah, I've skimmed the manual, and none of the points explained there has proved too helpful.)

Yeah, the manual is pretty hit or miss. Here's all the ways I know of to activate an event.

*Death of a block
*Hitting a block
*No more blocks in a layer
*Death of an NPC
*Talking to an NPC
*Activate an NPC
*No more NPCs in a layer
*Another event

You could have, say, dropping out of a pipe and hitting a Goomba to start an event, if that's what you want.
You could use the SMB1 Axe. Select the event you want to happen in the "Death:" drop down box in the event dialogue box for the axe.
Once you have finished the level and it's working correctly you can make the axe invisible in Paint.NET or something similar to that.
Is it possible to loop music, rather than have it fade out after a while? Can you insert more than one custom song per level?

Is there a tutorial for inserting custom backgrounds somewhere?
Check out my music!
I have no idea how to loop MP3s, there is probably software that you can use to edit them but I can't help with that. You can use more than one song per level. However, when you use the event dialogue box to change music for say when a boss appears, you cannot change from one custom to another custom.

Backgrounds are the 'background2-X' files where X is a number from 1-58. Inserting them is easy. You just put the file in the level folder and select it from the backgrounds in the 'level settings' section.

Okay, but where do I set that? I haven't seen any button that says "Set activation condition" or something like that.

When placing a sprite, you can click on the Events button in the NPC tab to choose which Events the NPC will start when killed/talked to/etc.
Oh, so only sprites can trigger events? Guess I'll go the invisible axe way then. Thanks.

While I would suggest the invisible axe, Blocks and Tiles have the same Events tab for placing tiles. That's how On/Off blocks and the like work.
How would I load my own mp3? And how would I test my level? :p
Put the MP3 in the same folder as your level, go into the Level Settings tab in the editor, and then where it says "Custom", type your MP3 name and click "Custom". It should start playing.

To test your level, press F5 in the editor.
Awesome thanks! I've already got things started, and I really love how I can use MP3s. Might make more then one level after my next A2MT level is complete! The more variety I have the better I do.

Though I must keep the SMB3 movement in mind.
Quick question: How do I set up one of those levels where you throw the Koopa shell and then somehow ride on top of it? I remember there was one in one of the Talking Time games, and I wanted to try making one as well.

I believe it was just a glitch in the game, but you have to Hold the flipped rainbow shell, Spin Jump and let go of the shell. It's a pain to do.

Apparently, you can also run at full speed and throw the shell downwards.
